I don't know if The Day The Law Died is conventionally held to be in the A-list of Judge Dredd mega-epics? But for my money it's basically perfect, finding as it does that elusive alchemical formula between dramatic tension, ultraviolence, and untrammeled silliness that will power a golden age of Dredd for years from this point.Which means that any shortfall in this volume comes from its (loose) sequel, Helter Skelter. And while this Ennis-penned story is no disaster of Judgement Day proportions, its conceit of "a team-up of all the protagonist's greatest foes" was bloody silly in The Pandorica Opens and it's bloody silly here. But in the wrong way: Judge Cal was so joyously bonkers in the original, that this spiteful, pull-the-wings-off-flies sadist is cheap in comparison. And obviously none of Dredd's other "greatest foes" finds their finest hour as part of a gauntlet for Joe to run, in which he obviously disposes of them in a few panels/with a cheap quip each. Also, what did Judge Giant ever do to Garth Ennis to get branded as a pan-dimensional loser here?It's interesting to see Ennis writing Dredd here as a dichotomy between the unlikeable, inflexible stone killer and the moral hero with total commitment to protecting every single citizen at absolutely any cost. However in spite of the hagiographical sections, I do think the Dredd of this era comes across as quite unpleasant, engaging in way too much unnecessary brutality towards the perps; give me the uncomplicated idealism and the singing-and-dancing-Klegg musical interludes of the late 70s any day.

The Cursed Earth is an amazing invention in the formative years of the Judge Dredd strip, before the hardness of the eponymous character was laid down. It is full of strangeness and promise, something brought on in spades in the first/second mega epic in series canon. Without the character being pinned down, Dredd feels like a generic stoic hero character in this storyline. More exasperating is the excessive tweeness of certain moments that ruin any sense of suspense. For me, what makes the Cursed Earth storyline so interesting is the concept itself and what comes immediately after - “The Day The Law Died”.

Third in the excellent series reprinting every Dredd story, this covers progs 116 to 154, published between 1979 and 1980 (both in 2000AD and the annual). Focussing this time more on self-contained stories (there are two small series, one being “Father Earth”, the other the first appearance of “Judge Death” - which is excellent), the bulk of the stories are written by Wagner (often as John Howard), with Pat Mills also contributing and the artwork is superb, especially that of Brian Bolland (naturally), Ron Smith (who drew a lot more of my childhood/teenage reading than I’d remembered), Ian Gibson, Mike McMahon, Barry Mitchell (who I’m sure drew “Twisty” for Bullet) and the excellent John Cooper amongst others. Wagner, in some stories, also manages to predict events that would happen a few years beyond his writing (and get worse thirty years later - the gap I re-read these at), with reality TV shows such as “Sob Story”, so I hope he wasn’t as prescient elsewhere. The bulk of the stories work (I’m not so keen on Walter), some of them are brutal, some amusing, most are clever and occasionally you get flashes of anger from the writer, especially in one where a mad scientist is going to unleash the common cold. Great fun, with top notch writing and artwork, superbly reproduced and iconic to the core, I’d highly recommend this.

1955 crime comedy film directed by Alexander Mackendrick

Based on a true story, a group of allied escape artist-type prisoners-of-war are all put in an "escape proof" camp. Their leader decides to try to take out several hundred all at once. The first half of the movie is played for comedy, as the prisoners mostly outwit their jailers to dig the escape tunnel. The second half is high adventure as they use planes, trains, and boats to get out of occupied Europe.

Perseus (Harry Hamlin) is the favored son of the god Zeus (Sir Laurence Olivier), but he has unwittingly ticked off the sea goddess Thetis (Dame Maggie Smith). Just to make things worse, Perseus falls in love with the lovely Princess Andromeda (Judi Bowker), who used to be engaged to Thetis' son, Calibos (Neil McCarthy). It's the post-World War I era. Britons Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell are both naturally gifted fast sprinters, but approach running and how it fits into their respective lives differently. The son of a Lithuanian Jew, Harold, who lives a somewhat privileged life as a student at Cambridge, uses being the fastest to overcome what he sees as the obstacles he faces in life as a Jew despite that privilege. In his words to paraphrase an old adage, he is often invited to the trough, but isn't allowed to drink. His running prowess does earn him the respect of his classmates, especially his running teammates, and to some extent the school administration, if only he maintains what they consider proper gentlemanly decorum, which isn't always the case in their minds. Born in China, the son of Christian missionaries, Eric, a Scot, is a devout member of the Church of Scotland who eventually wants to return to that missionary work. He sees running as a win-win in that the notoriety of being fast gives him an added outlet to spread the word of God, while he sees his speed as being a gift from God, and he wants to run to honor God and that gift. This view does not sit well with his sister, Jennie Liddell, who sees his running as only taking away time from his work to God. Harold and Eric's lives do intersect in national races, but it is the one hundred meter track event at the 1924 Paris Olympics which the two men and their supporters most anticipate. Beyond the fact that Americans Charles Paddock and Jackson Scholz are favored in the event, the much anticipated head to head between Harold and Eric may be further shadowed by other issues, especially as it affects Eric's Christian beliefs.

On holiday with their mother in the Lake District in 1929 four children are allowed to sail over to the nearby island in their boat Swallow and set up camp for a few days. They soon realise this has been the territory of two other girls who sail the Amazon, and the scene is set for serious rivalry.

The film opens in a happy, comfortable upper middle-class home in Edwardian London. One night in 1905, the three children see their father usher two strangers into his study. After an argument he leaves with them and does not return. They and their mother fall on hard times and eventually move to a cottage in the country. Cohen also appears in two other guises: as Borat, a Kazakhstani reporter, and Bruno, a gay Austrian fashionista. Hilarity ensues.

Harold and Ethel Meaker live in South Ealing and run 'Rentaghost' where they rent ghosts out to the public. Over the years many ghosts came and went but the main Rentaghost crew consisted of Timothy Claypole - a jester at the court of Queen Matilda (The Dreaded Tyrant of the Twelfth Century), Hazel the McWitch - the ghost of a Scottish witch who was recruited during the rentapotion venture, Nadia Popov - a Dutch ghost who still suffered from hay fever and had a habit of 'popping off' whenever she saw a flower, Fred Mumford - originally founded Rentaghost after becoming a ghost in a shipping accident six months previously and ran the business for a short time, Hubert Davenport - a distinguished Victorian gentleman, Harold Meaker - originally the spooks landlord but later took over the business when Fred Mumford couldn't keep up with the rent and Ethel Meaker - Harold's wife who fancies herself as a bit of a singer. The Meaker's next-door neighbours, Rose and Arthur Perkins, were convinced that the Meaker's were a pair of nutters and hired a private detective, then tried to get a psychiatrist to convince them that they needed treatment.

Four young children hope for anything to happen and, when they become owners of the Phoenix, their adventure begins.

It is the height of the war in Vietnam, and U.S. Army Captain Willard is sent by Colonel Lucas and a General to carry out a mission that, officially, 'does not exist - nor will it ever exist'. The mission: To seek out a mysterious Green Beret Colonel, Walter Kurtz, whose army has crossed the border into Cambodia and is conducting hit-and-run missions against the Viet Cong and NVA. The army believes Kurtz has gone completely insane and Willard's job is to eliminate him. Willard, sent up the Nung River on a U.S. Navy patrol boat, discovers that his target is one of the most decorated officers in the U.S. Army. His crew meets up with surfer-type Lt-Colonel Kilgore, head of a U.S Army helicopter cavalry group which eliminates a Viet Cong outpost to provide an entry point into the Nung River. After some hair-raising encounters, in which some of his crew are killed, Willard, Lance and Chef reach Colonel Kurtz's outpost, beyond the Do Lung Bridge. Now, after becoming prisoners of Kurtz, will Willard & the others be able to fulfill their mission?

Chris Taylor is a young, naive American who gives up college and volunteers for combat in Vietnam. After The Seven Crystal Balls set the eerie stage, Tintin and his friends continue their adventures in Peru. There Tintin rescues an orange-seller named Zorrino from being bullied, and the young man becomes their guide in their quest to find the Temple of the Sun. But they find more than they bargained for and end up in a hot spot. The perils of this engaging two-part adventure are especially harrowing in their combination of the supernatural and the real, although the resolution is a little too deus ex machina. Calculus and the Thompsons provide their usual comic relief.

In his debut adventure, Tintin is pursued by Bolshevik agents trying to prevent him from exposing the new Soviet regime. Punctuated by slapstick and political revelations, this story is based on the writings of an anticommunist Belgian ex-consul to the Ukraine. Herge's early style revealed strong graphics, influenced by photo-reporting from the period, marking the historic debut of a major artist.
