4.5/5stars This was my 4th time reading the series and it was just as good as the first 3 times. Also I was able to notice and focus on many things that I haven't before. I really like how each book focuses on different set of main characters - this way by the end of the series the reader gets to know everybody from different points of view.This will probably forever be my favorite middle grade series and I am very happy to say that I still enjoy them after so many re-reads, and even if I'm probably way too old for these books :)Also, there are many, many cats in this book. What I appreciate most from Rawn is how flawlessly she’s able to weave various viewpoints together to create a cohesive story. This is a monster of a book and took me a very long time to get through because of how packed it is. The story back and forth from several different fronts of the ongoing war (including from the enemy’s perspective), and I was able to follow along almost effortlessly. I also felt connected to ALL of the characters, which is a feat in itself with so many perspectives. Rawn does a great job in taking her time and telling a comprehensive story.I was very stressed throughout this whole novel–the stakes are HIGH and I can’t imagine how heart-pounding the next one is going to be, but I’m excited for some resolution. It’s also fun to see growth from these characters I’ve spent four (very large) books with getting to know and love. Some advancements are heart-wrenching and some are great, but I was an emotional mess for most of this reading experience.Can’t say much more without giving spoilers–I’m excited to read the sequel and see where this story ends!Also posted on Purple People Readers.

It took me a while to get into this, because I’m terrible at keeping up with series, and it has been a while since I read the previous Dragon Prince book. But, kudos to Melanie Rawn for creating such a memorable world and characters, because by the first couple of chapters I’d gotten my footing and could read the story without looking up who everyone was. (Thank goodness for character directories in fantasy novels!)Overall, I really enjoyed this series as a whole. The world is wonderful and I love how Rawn is able to create such different, vibrant characters. There are dozens of strong, independent women who are able to hold their own even in this brutal society, and in this book, she introduces a female character who isn’t so strong-willed, which was a nice change of pace, and I like that we got to see that someone can be strong and brave without being stubborn and physically or mentally powerful.My favorite part of this is the tension between Andry and his family. It’s masterfully grey, where his family supports him as a person, but doesn’t necessarily agree with his tactics as Lord of Goddess Keep. For me, this is the most interesting dynamic within the whole story, especially when you throw in his relationship with Pol. I’m interested in seeing this further developed in the sequel series.I do think that this book suffers a bit from not having high enough stakes. The drama is there, but the danger isn’t, since the characters are overly smart and powerful, there really isn’t much of a question of how everything is going to turn out. It’s exciting and interesting, but there isn’t as much tension as there could be. It’s also a bit tough to keep up with things since there are huge year jumps. I appreciate not being walked through every boring thing, but I wish there were more of a transition so the reader can get a feel of the time passing.Overall, this is a decent fantasy. Wonderful characters, beautifully crafted world, and a plot that works and provides enough excitement to be entertained. I am planning to eventually read the sequel series and hope it only gets better!Also posted on Purple People Readers.

Yes by all means, judge a book set in a feudalistic world surrounded by dragon on your personal interpretation of feminism on Earth circa 2013. This makes no sense to me. If you're going to read a book I think you should read a book and suspend your sense of self to really get a feel for the world that's being created. Now yes McCaffrey wrote a lot of these books in the 60's and 70's and she did not write super liberated women, though for her time they would have seemed quite progressive no doubt. However again, the stories are set in a fantasy world that is feudal in nature so how about judging the writing on the writing? The stories are creative, plausible, the science of this world has continuity and logic, the characters are well written. They are great stories meant to be entertaining and distracting, not to be analyzed like you're in 5th period English.

A book doesn't have to be Great Literature or even particularly good to appear on my "formative fiction" shelf, it just has to be a book with a meaning that changed me or helped me to understand myself and the world in a new way. Fortunately, Dragonsong is also a very good book of its type.The best friend of my childhood was different from me in many ways: middle-class to my trailer-trash, older, weak where I was strong (he suffered from a heart condition that would kill him while still a teenager), and part of a large and functioning family.We both lived in religious households that discouraged "worldly" reading but, while my folks were strict, his were lax. During a winter holiday sleep-over, he smuggled Dragonsong and some of its many sequels to me. We sprawled in front of the wood-stove and read all day and long into the night. I'd scrimped to save for treats and, feeling very elegant, served us Ritz crackers with Cheeze-Whiz (the big jar!) and vienna sausages. I was so anxious to impress, I put my finger on the side of the stove to show him how long I could stand to sizzle.There were other sleep-overs and other books, but this is was the important one, the one I remember whenever I open a new book and read merely for the pleasure of escape into another kind of life.Menolly, the protagonist of Dragonsinger, escapes in a more literal way. Denied the expression of her natural abilities, she runs away to live independently. She fed my tomboy fantasies by living rough, making her own shelter, killing and skinning a large bird, and taming wild animals. Just when she is settling into her new rustic life, disaster strikes. Finally, her talents are recognized by kindly people who whisk her away on dragon-back to a new community of people who can value her for the reasons she values herself.It is not a complicated story, but it is well-told and the theme is universal. It has resonated in my life as I have tried, with only some measure of success, to find a safe place where my own talents are recognized and friends who care for me not in spite of, but because of who I am. The irony for me, of course, is how that place is located in the past, with that dead boy who loved me enough to smuggle books.

I won't go into depth as this is a book I've read several times since first encountering it as a teenager ages ago and there are literally hundreds of detailed reviews. One thing that inspires me about Dragonsinger, though, is that it doesn't follow the contemporary form of having everything go wrong for the main character all the way through until the end. In contrast, Menolly actually succeeds in almost every chapter--a victory for her shared with the reader--and yet somehow McCaffrey still made the drama feel genuine throughout.

Dear Mrs. McCaffrey,What were you thinking? You had done a brilliant job with the first two books in this "trilogy", so please do explain why you felt compelled to switch your focus from our beloved heroine Menolly to her rambunctious sidekick, Piemur? This is no trilogy. Do you think you can just skip ahead three years and make Menolly a peripheral player? Do you think that you can write a slow-moving, rather repetitive adventure story that lacks the resonance of the first two books in this trilogy, and we won't notice? We notice; and we are not happy.This story would be fine as a stand alone story. It still would not be a great story. Despite jumping across the map of your mythical Pern, this story goes virtually nowhere. Anticlimactic is an understatement. Piemur is not even close to being fleshed out as a character and, due to this, does not have enough weight as a driving force for this story.Why this final book jumps gears so completely is beyond me. Obviously, it left me rather frustrated. The story of Menolly was good, layered and exciting. As of book two, it was also nowhere near complete. In Dragondrums she is viewed from afar. She is understood only to the degree that Piemur understands her. This is at odds with the idea of a trilogy whose arc seemed to be the coming of age of a young girl.I would really like to know if Mrs. McCaffrey views these three books as a trilogy or if the publisher decided to lump them together and advertise them as one. I'm more inclined to believe the latter. Not just because I want to (though I do indeed want to), but because the sense of story in the first two books flowed with a confidence utterly lacking in this final one.

Gather round children, and cast your minds back to the ye old days of the late 80's/early 90's, when fantasy was still very much an underground thing, most stories were tedious Tolkien retreads or Dungeons and Dragons sessions put down on paper, and writers of the feminine persuasion were notably light on the ground. Which makes this book and the various series it spawn so interesting....Nowadays, female fantasy authors are a pretty common sight, so it's a bit shocking to consider just how ahead of its time Dragon Prince was in terms of what could be done in a traditional fantasy novel. When I first picked it up, it was amazed just how different this was from the other fare to be found in bookstores (yes, books were sold in actual stores. Ask your Dad....)What Melanie Rawn did with this story was take all the elements of an awesome epic fantasy and mix it with the conventions of a romance novel, seasoned with some of the most detailed and compelling examples of world building to be found anywhere. The result was something groundbreaking. While there are battles galore and fantastical deed by the score, the core of this tale is the relationship between Rohan and Sioned, the passion that draws them together, the dangers and obstacles that block them. No final voyages to Valhalla here...more along the lines of a traditional romance, Lancelot and Guinevere, Romeo and Juliet, or any number of bodice rippers sold by the dozen made magnificent by the inclusion of dragons.Today it's a common enough formula, which makes this book something of a groundbreaker. It showed (to angsty Gen-X teenagers at least) that fantasy could be more than just the slay the dragon while standing on a mountain of skulls. That there was room for real emotion and passion.In short, a good read. Not to mention the cover art by Michael Whelan, reason enough to buy the printed version.Posted by Zackery Arbela

“There are times when certain oaths must be broken, if to keep them breaks oaths you have made to others.”I know what you think: Only the most dedicated fans make it that far. It is true, especially that initially Sword-Sworn was meant to be the final instalment in the tales of Tiger and Del. And the book has a definite ambiance of things coming to an end. At least at the beginning.Tiger returns to the South where he carries a death sentence on his head. He is forsworn. He also comes back because he had failed (you can give the trip to Skandi many names but success will not be one of them). Homecoming after failure is no the easiest of things. It is also not Tiger’s first return to the South. Yet, this time Tiger doesn’t feel like he’s outgrown his homeland. He’s matured, he’s survived the breakthrough point in the journey of self-discovery: He is now versatile not only in sword-dancing but also magic. And he decided it is time to give back to the community. This, I guess, is the main reason why Tiger wants to (re)start a sword-dancing school in Alimat. The whole school business, the master-apprentice arc starts only towards the end of the novel so if you are interested in this part, feel free to skip the first thirty chapters (or actually jump straight to the final one). It is a shame, I am a great fan of the “from-zero-to-hero-successful-educational-establishment” trope. In fact, no (view spoiler)[Alimat (hide spoiler)]

Because we love stubborn horses!!!If you are able to accept that there are male-dominated macho cultures out there and they produce some very male-centered and female-demeaning cultural values as a whole, and that even members of said cultures could learn better, as far as women and their rights to have lives are concerned, if introduced to the right circumstances, this is the series for you! If you look onto this cultural battle as anything but proving the feminist point of view, then you are over-analyzing it and missing the point.\

Tiger, the best, or at least one of the best sword-dancers of the South started off the series as one of those bravos, full of machismo and air, who despite having a good heart was a product of his environment. What mattered are other men, his opinion, his sword and his horse. Secondary are cold and other comforts, while women are somewhere on the bottom of the list, there only to please and suborn to men. And then he met Del! From the second the beautiful, although not feminine blond Northerner woman with a sword (the Horror!!!), entered his life and little by little has been changing it just by being who she is. I have enjoyed the development of both characters into something less severely South or North, and becoming a amalgamation of cultures, creating something so much more and so much better. ... Yes, they still have a long way to go in order to uproot habits and views long embedded in them and those around them.\
  "..."Now, I've always known women are capable of doing just about anything they set their minds to, once they've made a decision. Getting to that decision isn't always the easiest thing, or the most logical, but eventually they get there. And, when pressed to it, they make promises they keep to, no matter what it takes.For Del, it took me. And very nearly our deaths."..."\
Del has changed a lot as well from the cocky, self-assured, singularly focused girl we met that first time in the cantina. For one, she has achieved her goals, the vengeance she sought all of the years after she escaped from the slave-trader and his caravan. Her song is finished and she is a sword without a song now, at only 23 years old... It seems like she has crammed 10 lifetimes in the years she had run for her freedom and now she is lost, Tiger being her only anchor. And his being under the threat of being taken over by the spirit of an evil wizard is making her feel raw and scared, which is not something she has allowed herself to feel in a long, long time... \

"You've been spouting off to me for the last--what, almost two years?--about how a woman has to fight to make her way in a man's world. You've fought, and you've won. But expecting me to give you your answers is devaluing what you've accomplished. You became what you had to be for a specific purpose. That purpose is finished. So now find another one."Del watched me. What she thought I couldn't tell; she is, even for me, difficult to read. But she had lost the burning intensity of her anger moments before. This series is a buddy adventure fantasy with swords, deserts, wizards and constant pursuit. I love the comradery, I love the respect the characters give even to their enemies, I love the world-building, since I feel like I have been personally in all the places they track through, I love the debt of character and the seemingly humorous way it is reviled, and most of all I love the Stud!!!!! That horse has become my favorite animal or horse in particular, ever in literature!!! I even read a more current author try to recreate this dynamic in their book and as much as I appreciated the homage, this original is still the best!!! To all Adventure and Fantasy lovers out there, this is a light and very addictive read and I would heartily recommend it to you! I can't wait to find out what happens in the next volume!!! Six teams compete through a series of physical and mental challenges as it narrows down to only one team given the privilege to enter a mysterious Mayan temple in order to retrieve an artifact from a well known figure in a limited amount of time.

Two teams of two children, ages 9 through 13, competed in this classic kiddie game show of questions and physical challenges. At the beginning of each show, the two teams (each with such names as "Wacky Wormheads" or "Slimy Superkids") competed in a physical challenge (described below). The winner of the physical challenge would gain control of the first round questions. Host Summers asked the question, to which the team could answer for $10 or "dare" (i.e., challenge) the opposing team to answer for $20. However, the opponents could "double dare" (ergo, challenge back) the original team to answer; the original team could then answer for $40 or complete a "physical challenge," an often messy stunt that had to be completed within 10, 15, 20, or 30 seconds. "Physical challenge" stunts could include one team member wrapping his/her partner in a giant "tortilla shell" and drop hot sauce on it; having to throw three balloons filled with fingerpaint at a target, while having to select from a tub that also had water balloons inside; and catapulting condiments onto a giant hamburger while the partner held the bun and patty. Completing the physical challenge was worth $20; however, losing the physical challenge meant the other team got the money and control of the questions. The opposing team also got control of the questions if the other team answered incorrectly (as well as the cash if the question was dared or double-dared). Two rounds were played, with the second round values worth $20, $40 and $80. The team with the most money after two rounds won and advanced to the Double Dare Obstacle Course, a series of eight often very messy obstacles the team had to clear within 60 seconds to win a grand prize. Each team member alternated duties, but each time, the object was to retrieve a flag and hand it to his/her partner. Each flag was worth a prize, and if the team retrieved all eight flags, they won a grand prize (usually a trip). Several variants of "Double Dare" aired through the years, including a family version and a syndicated "Super Sloppy" entry (similar to the above description, except the stunts were exponentially messier).

Three kids dawning the different colors blue, red, and purple compete in relatively cool-looking olympic-style games to achieve as many points as they can. At the end of every episode, they climb a big fake mountain, braving tumbling rocks made out of styrofoam, sparkling glitter, shooting steam, and loud sounds while trying to hit all the "Actuators" along their way to the summit including the final one at the very top. The first place winner gets a "piece of the rock" which is a big green glowing rock-shaped thing, that is supposed to be from the mountain they just climbed. The mountain is called the "Aggro Crag" later changed to the "Mega Crag" during the 3rd season, and finally the "Super Aggro Crag" for Global GUTS.

Rebecca Pearson once had a difficult pregnancy with triplets. The resulting births occurred on the same day as her husband Jack Pearson's thirty-sixth birthday. The lives of Rebecca, Jack and their three offspring - Kevin, Kate and Randall - are presented at different points in time. These stories may demonstrate the emotional ties that exist not only because of being family, but also because of four of them having the same birthday and some of them having always been together, meaning since conception.
