It’s a laff riot! Megg and Mogg decide to take a trip to Amsterdam for some quality couple time, although the trip gets off to a rocky start when they forget their antidepressants. They need Owl to come and help them save their relationship. But why does he have a suitcase full of glass dildos? And what will they do when they realize that the housesitting Werewolf Jones has turned their apartment into a “f#@k zone”? Megg &amp;amp; Mogg in Amsterdam collects all of Simon Hanselmann’s contributions to Vice.com, the Ignatz Award-nominated short story “St. Owl’s Bay,” and other surprises that will add additional color and background for fans of Megahex.

One More Year is Simon Hanselmann’s latest Megg &amp; Mogg collection, full of new subversive stoner comedy stories. Like the last one, Megg &amp; Mogg in Amsterdam, One More Year is pretty decent though unfortunately doesn’t reach the heights of Megahex.  The thing is: three books in and the schtick is starting to feel stale. You know like how sometimes a sitcom becomes successful and then dips in quality - the characters become too well defined and don’t change, their catchphrases and storylines become overly familiar? That’s where Hanselmann’s Megg &amp; Mogg is now.  Megg is still a basket case, Owl is still the group’s punching bag, and Werewolf Jones remains outrageous as fuck. They get stoned, they do childish, reckless, silly shit, repeat, etc. and the artwork is the same, book in, book out. But Hanselmann’s created something great with this title and still manages to be entertaining every so often.  WW Jones, that dirty bastard, had me genuinely laughing when he accidentally took viagra at the water park and was walking around with a huge boner that his banana hammock utterly failed to cover! And his birthday wish to take a “Boston Clanger” (a shit) on Owl’s pillow was ridiculously funny. That’s the level of humour but it works!  The comedy walks the line between hilarious and unpleasant when it comes to how the group treat Owl, kinda like the way Family Guy escalated the violence against Meg by Peter and co. Sometimes it’s just funny because Owl’s a bit of a creep too but other times it can be off-putting where you just feel sorry for him and hate Megg &amp; Mogg for being so cruel.  The high school flashback was mildly interesting, as were the stories on the Zine Faire and the Ram Raids, but just as many stories failed to hit anywhere close to the target like when they got retail jobs and had a birthday dinner for Owl. There are also a large number of one or two pagers that are totally unmemorable and throwaway.  I don’t know how many more of these Hanselmann can crank out before they become boring but it feels like he’s starting to run out of ideas and ending the series and trying something new might not be a bad idea. One More Year, as the title suggests, is basically more of the same but there’s enough good stuff here to satisfy fans - just don’t expect too much. If you’ve yet to experience Hanselmann’s Megg &amp; Mogg comics, check out Megahex instead for an excellent knee-slapper of a read.

After 1989, capitalism has successfully presented itself as the only realistic political-economic system - a situation that the bank crisis of 2008, far from ending, actually compounded. Nor does this fact for a moment deny that some prophets and martyrs demanded first and last the abolition of slavery as the sole object of the war and at any cost of life and wealth. Some poor whites rose to the professional class, so that the rift between the planters and the mass of the whites was partially bridged by this smaller intermediate class. While revolt against the domination of the planters over the poor whites was voiced by men like Helper, who called for a class struggle to destroy the planters, this was nullified by deep-rooted antagonism to the Negro, whether slave or free. If black labor could be expelled from the United States or eventually exterminated, then the fight against the planter could take place. But the poor whites and their leaders could not for a moment contemplate a fight of united white and black labor against the exploiters. Indeed, the natural leaders of the poor whites, the small farmer, the merchant, the professional man, the white mechanic and slave overseer, were bound to the planters and repelled from the slaves and even from the mass of the white laborers in two ways: first, they constituted the police patrol who could ride with planters and now and then exercise unlimited force upon recalcitrant or runaway slaves; and then, too, there was always a chance that they themselves might also become planters by saving money, by investment, by the power of good luck; and the only heaven that attracted them was the life of the great Southern planter.” And this, longer, but so beautifully written I could not dare cut a word, and which also seems painfully worth reading during our present times: "This brings us down to the period of the Civil War. Up to the time that the war actually broke out, American labor simply refused, in the main, to envisage black labor as a part of its problem. Right up to the edge of the war, it was talking about the emancipation of white labor and the organization of stronger unions without saying a word, or apparently giving a thought, to four million black slaves. During the war, labor was resentful. Workers were forced to fight in a strife between capitalists in which they had no interest and they showed their resentment in the peculiarly human way of beating and murdering the innocent victims of it all, the black free Negroes of New York and other Northern cities; while in the South, five million non-slaveholding poor white farmers and laborers sent their manhood by the thousands to fight and die for a system that had degraded them equally with the black slave. Could one imagine anything more paradoxical than this whole situation? America thus stepped forward in the first blossoming of the modern age and added to the Art of Beauty, gift of the Renaissance, and to Freedom of Belief, gift of Martin Luther and Leo X, a vision of democratic self-government: the domination of political life by the intelligent decision of free and self-sustaining men. They said: Slavery was wrong but not all wrong; slavery must perish and not simply move; God made black men; God made slavery; the will of God be done; slavery to the glory of God and black men as his servants and ours; slavery as a way to freedom — the freedom of blacks, the freedom of whites; white freedom as the goal of the world and black slavery as the path thereto. Up with the white world, down with the black! Then came this battle called Civil War, beginning in Kansas in 1854, and ending in the presidential election of 1876 — twenty awful years. The slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again toward slavery. The whole weight of America was thrown to color caste. The colored world went down before England, France, Germany, Russia, Italy and America. A new slavery arose. The upward moving of white labor was betrayed into wars for profit based on color caste. Democracy died save in the hearts of black folk. Indeed, the plight of the white working class throughout the world today is directly traceable to Negro slavery in America, on which modern commerce and industry was founded, and which persisted to threaten free labor until it was partially overthrown in 1863. The resulting color caste founded and retained by capitalism was adopted, forwarded and approved by white labor, and resulted in subordination of colored labor to white profits the world over. Thus the majority of the world's laborers, by the insistence of white labor, became the basis of a system of industry which ruined democracy and showed its perfect fruit in World War and Depression. If you happen to get the version which has a forward by Richard Pipes, I strongly suggest reading the text of Vladimir Lenin first, maybe Google or Wikipedia some of the historical references, and draw your own conclusion. Richard Pipes is your classical establishment propaganda clerk who's job is to 'help' you see the text the way the State wants you to, that is, defanged of its revolutionary message.Pipes slides in his prejudice hidden by historical facts, intent on having you view this remarkable man dismissively as a rebel. Lenin clearly shows that in order to bring about change we need a violent revolution of the working people (proletariat) against the slave owners (bourgeois) Lenin, who draws from Karl Marx and Fredric Engels shows the 'State' for what it is. A parasitic institution created by an oppressing class against its enemy -- the 99% -- You and I, the working class. He explains why it is inevitable that this class conflict will lead to revolution. And looking at current events as well as historical ones, the facts are undeniable. He also shows the many ways the State tries to disable this prophetic voice, not unlike the forward by richard pipes talked about previously.Karl Marx was every bit an objective scientist, but truth is not wanted by those who lie! Donnie Darko doesn't get along too well with his family, his teachers, and his classmates; but he does manage to find a sympathetic friend in Gretchen, who agrees to date him. Both the event, and Donnie's escape, seem to have been caused by supernatural events.

In the early twenty-first century, the Tyrell Corporation, during what was called the Nexus phase, developed robots, called "replicants", that were supposed to aid society, the replicants which looked and acted like humans. When the superhuman generation Nexus 6 replicants, used for dangerous off-Earth endeavors, began a mutiny on an off-Earth colony, replicants became illegal on Earth. Police units, called "blade runners", have the job of destroying - or in their parlance "retiring" - any replicant that makes its way back to or created on Earth, with anyone convicted of aiding or assisting a replicant being sentenced to death. It's now November, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. Rick Deckard, a former blade runner, is called out of retirement when four known replicants, most combat models, have made their way back to Earth, with their leader being Roy Batty. One, Leon Kowalski, tried to infiltrate his way into the Tyrell Corporation as an employee, but has since been able to escape. Beyond following Leon's trail in hopes of finding and retiring them all, Deckard believes part of what will help him is figuring out what the replicants wanted with the Tyrell Corporation in trying to infiltrate it. The answer may lie with Tyrell's fail-safe backup mechanism. Beyond tracking the four, Deckard faces a possible dilemma in encountering a fifth replicant: Rachael, who works as Tyrell's assistant. The issue is that Dr. Elden Tyrell is experimenting with her, to provide her with fake memories so as to be able to better control her. With those memories, Rachael has no idea that she is not human. The problem is not only Rachael's assistance to Deckard, but that he is beginning to develop feelings for her.

"Punishment Park" is a pseudo-documentary purporting to be a film crews's news coverage of the team of soldiers escorting a group of hippies, draft dodgers, and anti-establishment types across the desert in a type of capture the flag game. The soldiers vow not to interfere with the rebels' progress and merely shepherd them along to their destination. At that point, having obtained their goal, they will be released. The film crew's coverage is meant to insure that the military's intentions are honorable. As the representatives of the 60's counter-culture get nearer to passing this arbitrary test, the soldiers become increasingly hostile, attempting to force the hippies out of their pacifist behavior. A lot of this film appears improvised and in several scenes real tempers seem to flare as some of the "acting" got overaggressive. This is a interesting exercise in situational ethics. The cinéma vérité style, hand-held camera, and ambiguous demands of the director - would the actors be able to maintain their roles given the hazing they were taking - pushed some to the brink. The cast's emotions are clearly on the surface. Unfortunately this film has gone completely underground and is next to impossible to find. It would offer a captivating document of the distrust that existed between soldiers willfully serving in the military and those persons who opposed the war peacefully.

Officer Collins has been spearheading one of the US Army's most secretive experiments to date: the Human Hibernation Project. If successful, the project would store its subjects indefinitely until they are needed most. Their first test subject - Joe Bauers - was not chosen for his superiority. Searching for family. In the early twenty-first century, zombies have taken over America. Dante Hicks is not having a good day. He clerks in a small convenience store and is told to come into work on his day off.
