The book is sometimes described as being "erotic poems" but there's nothing particularly sexual or sensual about them; they sometimes do mention desire and explicit sexual acts or parts, but there's no clear attempt to arouse anyone going on. Mostly they seem to be about pain and frustrating at not having the right guy or waiting for him. The poems frequently incorporate references to her Wood Nymph Seeks Centaur mythological dating guide, so I'm glad I read that first because it gave some pretty clear context for the types of people she was throwing in this shorthand for. My favorite two poems, unsurprisingly, were "The Island" and "Love's Arms"--because they are about a woman's dependence on herself and her non-romantic relationships for her growth. I'm afraid I wasn't particularly moved by the imagery or longing in these poems, but I did find these two inspiring.In "The Island," the speaker is abandoned on an island and shrinks to the size of a doll, and is repeatedly told by men that she is a disappointment for various reasons, but after concentrating on herself and building herself a house and loving herself, she grew back to her natural size, and only THEN did she tell her father--the sky--that she's ready to be assisted to find the mate she wants.In "Love's Arms," the speaker wants to trust love--personified--but her friends keep saying she's been hurt by running after love too many times, and finally she realizes that those friends, supposedly holding her down, ARE love, because they want to nourish and protect her and stop her from getting broken again. They want to keep her still for once so love can find HER.

Reviewed by coollibrarianchick for TeensReadToo.comOn Francesca Lia Block's website, there are a bunch of words lumped together, reminding me of magnetic poetry that has been used to describe her work. I couldn't agree more with the words reviewers have used. The one word that kept jumping out at me while reading this was lyrical. I was looking for a word to describe what I thought about her newest literary novella, BLOOD ROSES, and that describes it perfectly. Surreal and dreamy would be good adjectives to use, as well. The book is broken up into nine short stories. All of the stories deal with a transformation of some sort, whether it is physical or emotional. Not once in any of her stories is the magical element questioned - it is just accepted. My favorite story out of all of them is called Skin Art. Basically, it is about the all-consuming power of first love and how, after time has passed, it is not as great as once thought. Easy to read, this little book sucks you in, especially if you are a fan of thought-provoking fantasy, as Ms. Block straddles the line between the worlds of magic and reality. The stories seem very personal, emotional; even, at times, irrational. You definitely can't argue with the quality of writing - Francesca Lia Block is a very good writer, but with that said she is not for everyone. People that are into the art scene will enjoy her work, as well as those who like to analyze dreams, as the stories are rich in sensory detail. Hail to the queen of magical realism.

She's in competition with a competent colleague for an assistant manager position and isn't too sure about her status with a boyfriend. Worried that her boss will think less of her if she shows weakness, she refuses a time extension on a loan to an old woman, Mrs. Ganush, who now faces foreclosure and the loss of her house. In retaliation, the old woman place a curse on her which, she subsequently learns, will result in her being taken to hell in a few days time. With the help of a psychic, she tries to rid herself of the demon, but faces several hurdles in the attempt.

When Coraline moves to an old house, she feels bored and neglected by her parents. She finds a hidden door with a bricked up passage. During the night, she crosses the passage and finds a parallel world where everybody has buttons instead of eyes, with caring parents and all her dreams coming true. When the Other Mother invites Coraline to stay in her world forever, the girl refuses and finds that the alternate reality where she is trapped is only a trick to lure her.

This is the book that started it all for me. A friend recommended I read it, and Francesca Lia Block made an immediate move to the top slot in my favorite authors list, where she's stayed ever since.Violet sees life as a movie. There's always a scene, a mood, something unfolding. Though her own life, sadly, is lacking in some of the necessities for a great script. Conflict. Her parents, who seem to be from a completely different bloodline than she, give her none. And what little she does have isn't juicy enough. Love interest. Sorely lacking. Anyone who can understand what she wants and where she's coming from.Enter Claire. Innocence emboddied, wearing a Tinker Bell shirt with faerie wings, surrounded by taunting peers. Violet decides she's perfect. Claire, never having fit in, is happy to have a friend. And one who defended her.Their early adventures are innocent enough. A visit to a transvestite bar. A trip to an underground concert, where Violet finds her love interest in the form of the godly Flint Cassidy. But her unwilling slip into humanity leaves her wounded, when she realizes she fell for an act like any other girl. Determined, she makes the most of it, and takes her script to his agent, who gives her a receptionist job in exchange for helping her with it.Claire is first excited, soon after worried. Violet comes to school less and less, eventually isn't there at all. The poetry class they signed up for together also becomes Claire's alone. As she gets deeper into her relationship with the teacher, Violet isn't there to listen, or warn her. Claire too finds herself injured and lost.But even the darkness can't keep them apart. After all the misunderstandings and apologies gone awry, their friendship prevails. Life in the desert, away from the cruelties of the big city, awaits.Violet's portion of the story should appeal to any movie buff. Claire's to anyone who's ever felt alien, finding solace mostly in paper and pen. A very quick read, which might or might not keep you up at night to get to see how it turns out, and one of my all time favorites, I highly recommend Violet and Claire to any and all.
