I read The Fall of the House of Usher, William Wilson, and Hop Frog. All very interesting stories. I believe Edgar Allan Poe's purpose in writing these stories was to portray a strange array of madness brought through strange similarities. In The Fall of the House of Usher the narrator realizes when they are burying Madeline that she and Roderick are twins. They have that strange connection that makes Roderick realize his sister is not dead and that she is coming for him before everything crumbles. In William Wilson another person just like the narrator follows him around everywhere he goes until he finally snaps and kills them, only to find out he has killed himself. That one was the most intriguing due to it's sudden plot twist at the end. In Hop Frog although Hop Frog isn't exactly like Trippetta they are both dwarf size and it is because of what is done to her that Hop Frog snaps on the King and his royal court. The theme they all share is the madness the main character goes through due a traumatic event or because of someone close and very similar to them. Madness cannot only make a person mentally ill, but physically ill too. Roderick was affected greatly by his twin sister's death. Only to be traumatized even further by her later to the point of his death. The narrator William Wilson is so tired of competing with this other individual who is exactly like him and just wants to be unique and be the only William Wilson. The other William Wilson follows him wherever he goes and is his constant shadow, which drives the narrator mad and he ends up killing himself. Hop Frog is the only one out of these three that actually made it out of the story alive. He had a very heroic ending, but there was still death involved and madness of course.The stories were were written in a narrative style because of how everything happened in the stories. They had a chronological series of events that had a great climax and of course a resolution. They all had a very interesting way of unfolding that led to not only plot twists, but exciting yet terrifying events. This style is effective because reading the story and having it unfold before your eyes makes it a lot more interesting to read. Knowing what happens from beginning to end gives a great understanding to the underlying meaning of the stories also. In my opinion the stories were fantastic. They kept me intrigued and in suspense. I was just waiting to see what happened next. I have always been a huge Poe fan so they were right up my alley. I would definitely recommend these stories to any Poe fans or if people who like the Gothic Era of literature. I wouldn't really change anything about the stories because the way they are written and the elements that fall into place with them really give them that special something. Like always Poe does not disappoint.

La mort est mon métier sont les pseudo-mémoires de Rudolf Höß (renommé Rudolf Lang dans l'ouvrage). Rudolf Höß était le commandant du camp de concentration et d'extermination d'Auschwitz pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.L'histoire commence en 1913 alors que Rudolf Lang a 13 ans.Il reçoit une éducation catholique mal comprise et très normative. Son père, un commerçant, ayant reçu une éducation militaire (famille militaire), totalement psychorigide, qui a commis un péché dans sa jeunesse à Paris et avec qui il entretient des rapports tendus, veut qu'il devienne prêtre pour expier les fautes que lui-même a commises. Rudolf croit en Dieu, jusqu'au jour où, en se battant avec un de ses camarades d'école (Werner), il lui casse la jambe. Immédiatement, il va se confesser à un prêtre. Le soir même, son père devient fou de rage après avoir appris que son fils a commis un « péché » sans lui en parler. Rudolf se sent trahi par le prêtre, seule personne au courant de l'épisode, les autres croyant à un accident. Or, on apprendra que c'est en fait le père de l'enfant blessé qui s'est plaint devant une assemblée de parents d'élèves. Le mal est fait : Rudolf ne croit plus en Dieu. Son père meurt peu avant la déclaration de guerre en 1914.À seize ans, Lang débute sa carrière militaire, d'abord en partant directement pour le front Ouest où il sera intercepté puis renvoyé à l'arrière car il est trop jeune, puis comme aide à l'hôpital militaire où il rencontrera un dragon de cavalerie qui le persuadera de rentrer dans son unité et de partir sur le front en Turquie.À la fin de la guerre, il se retrouve au chômage, rejeté par sa famille. Il s'apprête à se suicider lorsqu'un de ses collègues arrive et lui brandit un tract en lui disant de ne pas trahir l'Allemagne en se donnant la mort.Il adhère au parti nazi et se voit confier la direction d'une ferme avec sa femme Elsie, où il vit des journées de dur labeur, mais paisibles. Puis, après la prise du pouvoir par Hitler, il entre dans les SS, n'ayant pourtant pas les critères requis pour y adhérer. Il accède à des fonctions de plus en plus importantes dans la hiérarchie SS, jusqu'à devenir commandant du camp d'Auschwitz. Ce camp, d'abord de concentration, puis d'extermination, devient le lieu de la lente et tâtonnante mise au point de l'Usine de Mort du village d'Auschwitz. Il y reçoit l'ordre du Reichsführer Himmler de supprimer 500 000 unités par an au lieu des ridicules 80 000 unités de Treblinka. Lang va s'attacher à accomplir la mission qui lui a été assignée : tuer le plus grand nombre de Juifs et éliminer le plus efficacement possible les cadavres. Après la guerre et la chute d'Hitler, il est emprisonné, puis condamné à la pendaison après son procès où il affirmera avoir seulement suivi les ordres, indiquant d'un air naturel qu'il a supervisé et participé activement au meurtre de « seulement » 2,5 millions de personnes au lieu des 3,5 millions prévus3.Tout au long du livre, il se montre incapable de sentiments et même d'action personnelle, car sa conduite lui a toujours été dictée par un chef en qui il portait une confiance totale. À la fin, on le sent cependant en colère se disant trahi par Himmler, qui, tel un lâche, s'est suicidé, et n'a ainsi pas voulu assumer son rôle dans l'extermination des Juifs, laissant Rudolf seul responsable de ses actes. Jusqu'au bout, il assume cependant son idée du chef, en répétant froidement et méthodiquement qu'il est le seul responsable de ce qui s'est passé à Auschwitz, et en énonçant sans difficulté les atrocités commises. Son seul moment de doute survient lorsque sa femme apprend ses activités, mais, ayant été choisi pour ses rares qualités de conscience il n'accorde pas d'importance à la morale.

If you are a fan of the post apocolypse genre, then you will appreciate this gem of a book. It is difficult to find, but it is well worth perservering with a search. The title of the book refers to an old castle in rural France, and which is owned by our hero, the narrator of the story. By a happy coincidence of ancient stone and being sheltered by a cliff, a small community survives the aftermath of a "clean" bomb by sheltering within its walls. At first the community is obsessed with the everyday challenges of life - what to eat, drink, will there be fallout? But as the novel progresses, and we learn of other survivors, it begins to look at the very nature of human behaviour when stripped of the facade of civilization.

The hero-narrator of The Catcher in the Rye is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days. The boy himself is at once too simple and too complex for us to make any final comment about him or his story. Perhaps the safest thing we can say about Holden is that he was born in the world not just strongly attracted to beauty but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it. There are many voices in this novel: children's voices, adult voices, underground voices-but Holden's voice is the most eloquent of all. Transcending his own vernacular, yet remaining marvelously faithful to it, he issues a perfectly articulated cry of mixed pain and pleasure. However, like most lovers and clowns and poets of the higher orders, he keeps most of the pain to, and for, himself. The pleasure he gives away, or sets aside, with all his heart. It is there for the reader who can handle it to keep. J.D. Salinger's classic novel of teenage angst and rebellion was first published in 1951. The novel was included on Time's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923. It was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. It has been frequently challenged in the court for its liberal use of profanity and portrayal of sexuality and in the 1950's and 60's it was the novel that every teenage boy wants to read.

The young William Styron.The prospect for me of parting the pages of a new book produces a similar feeling to parting the warm thighs of a new lover. The anticipation and thrill of the beginning of a new adventure, whether it is swimming through the pages of a book or wrestling between the silk sheets of a bed, should produce the same tingles and let loose the same sparks of grand passion. Reading is a love affair. If you don’t feel this way, I’m sorry. I’ll offer you the same advice that I offered a married woman who once confessed to me that she didn’t enjoy sex. My reply was...are you sure you are doing it right? Maybe too many of you are picking the wrong lovers, or maybe you don’t have the proper reading resume to make the connections that produce grand passion, or maybe your mind is too closed off and you need to let it roam free. Do keep trying.This is a novel of lust and tragedy. At several points in the narrative, there is a merging together of the tragedy of unfulfilled wishes tinged by memories that can’t stay forgotten. This is really two novels, twinned together as the past intersects with the present. One part is of the trials and tribulations of Sophie Zawistowska, a Polish citizen who becomes the guest of the Nazis at Auschwitz-Birkenau during World War Two, and the other part is of the struggles of a young Southern writer in Brooklyn, New York, who is attempting to write the great American novel. Stingo first meets Sophie and her lover Nathan Landau while boarding at The Pink Palace. He doesn’t so much meet them as hear them. They are in the room above him fornicating like amphetamine drugged rabbits. There is nothing more excruciating to a person suffering from inflamed, unmitigated passion than to be forced to eavesdrop on the lustful consummations of the successful sexual conquests of others. When one is in this state, it is easy to give in to brooding self-pity and start believing that everyone in the world is getting laid except for him. Stingo is twenty-two and not only suffering from excessive horniess but also suffering from a malady that most men, especially, wish to rid themselves of as soon as possible...virginity. His yearning to breach the defenses of a woman’s virtue and finally end his involuntary celibacy is an all consuming desire that is even starting to adversely affect his ability to produce his masterpiece. ”I still yearned passionately to produce the novel which had been for so long captive in my brain. It was only that, having written down the first few fine paragraphs, I could not produce any others, or--to approximate Gertrude Stein’s remark about a lesser writer of the Lost Generation--I had the syrup but it wouldn’t pour.” Yes, Stingo has sap issues, if you know what I mean.William Styron infuses autobiography into this book under the guise of fiction. It is almost impossible for me to separate the young Styron from the sexually frustrated Stingo. Styron was a master at describing lust, verging on purple prose at times, but yet managing to capture in lush detail the true nature of hormonal driven desire. Here he describes Stingo noticing the rather innocent ramblings of his neighbor that inspired such wonderful flights of salacious yearning. ”Alone for an instant, blond Mavis Hunnicutt would appear in the garden, dressed in a blouse and tight flowered slacks; after pausing for a peek up at the opalescent evening sky, she would give an odd and bewitching toss of her lovely hair and then bend down to pluck tulips from the flowerbed. In this adorable stance, she could not know what she did to the loneliest junior editor in New York. My lust was incredible--something prehensile, a groping snout of desire, slithering down the begrimed walls of the wretched old building, uncoiling itself across a fence, moving with haste serpentine and indecent to a point just short of her upturned rump, where in silent metamorphosis it blazingly flowered into the embodiment of myself, priapic, ravenous, yet under hair-trigger control.”  Stingo might be a bit optimistic about the prospect of possessing any control if his fantasy, by some miracle, had ever manifested itself into reality. Chances are he would have been slinking back to his room with his tail between his legs, elated at finally successfully having sex, but burning with shame that he had failed to put in a good showing. In fact, he may have been left at the starting gate, having shot his wad before the starter’s pistol could even fire. Elation and shame, after all, are frequent companions during the early days of male sexual experience. He becomes best friends with Nathan and Sophie and soon finds himself caught up in their passionate affair. Their arguments prove as epic as their bouts of sexual passions. Stingo soon finds himself riding their emotional rollercoaster of cloud dwelling amorousness followed by dark, abhorrent, abusive quarrels that leave him shaken to the core of his belief in their enduring relationship.Stingo, like most of us, really does want the beautiful love story. Of course, riding side saddle during his Nick Carraway observations of Sophie and Nathan is his enduring love/lust for Sophie. She is lovely, not only in appearance, but in character. She is the type of woman for whom, if we are lucky enough to know her, most of us, male and female, would harbor our own infatuation. And then there is this constant, visible testament to her past: \
  ”And once again I was conscious of that pitiless blue toothbite of a tattoo on her forearm.”\
During the many times that Nathan and Sophie are split up, Stingo gets exclusive time with Sophie, listening to her pour out her frustrations and fears that her love for Nathan will end in tragedy, but she also shares with Stingo the horrid story of her time incarcerated by the Nazis. The things she is asked to do. The decisions she is forced to make are beyond what any human should ever have to do. Hearing the story of her past adds poignancy in his desire for her. It evokes in Stingo the longing to give her a safe, happy life that will make up for the life that war took from her. William Styron/Stingo has written a masterpiece. The honesty and humor about Stingo’s galloping sexual desire coupled with the tragedies of Sophie’s life take the reader up and down the emotional scale with laughter one moment followed by the brimming of tears. We experience Stingo’s inept, humorous conquests as he searches for a woman liberated enough to allow him ”to taste in a calm, exploratory way those varieties of bodily experience which until now had existed in my head like a vast and orgiastic, incessantly thumbed encyclopedia of lust.” Stingo also constantly suffers from his disloyal desire for Sophie while also hoping that somehow she and Nathan will figure out a way to be together. Mental health is explored in detail as well, a subject close and dear to Styron as he struggled his whole life from dark depressions. \

The older William Styron.This book is unforgettable. I have a feeling I will be able to recall scenes in vivid technicolor from this novel for the rest of my life. How can I ever forget Stingo, Sophie, and Nathan? Their lives have become so much a part of my life I can almost swear that I have moved into The Pink Palace for a time and listened to their Olympian bouts of lovemaking, punctuated with the thumping of the headboard and the susurrus of the bedsprings, by the groans of Stingo’s growing frustrations. On the day that Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, elderly Daisy Williams (nee Fuller) is on her deathbed in a New Orleans hospital. At her side is her adult daughter, Caroline. Daisy asks Caroline to read to her aloud the diary of Daisy's lifelong friend, Benjamin Button. Benjamin's diary recounts his entire extraordinary life, the primary unusual aspect of which was his aging backwards, being diagnosed with several aging diseases at birth and thus given little chance of survival, but who does survive and gets younger with time. Abandoned by his biological father, Thomas Button, after Benjamin's biological mother died in childbirth, Benjamin was raised by Queenie, a black woman and caregiver at a seniors home. Daisy's grandmother was a resident at that home, which is where she first met Benjamin. Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact throughout their lives, reconnecting in their forties when in age they finally match up. Some of the revelations in Benjamin's diary are difficult for Caroline to read, especially as it relates to the time past this reconnection between Benjamin and Daisy, when Daisy gets older and Benjamin grows younger into his childhood years.

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a darkly comic drama from Academy Award nominee Martin McDonagh (In Bruges). Regardless, Isaac may be able to rationalize events after they happen, no matter what those events are.
