Nello is a recently hired director of a newly developed work cooperative of former mental patients. After the closure of state psychiatric hospitals and asylums in Italy under the Basaglia Law, many former patients were left hopeless. With the intention of improving the lives of his pupils, Nello encourages them to expand their individual abilities.

After a series of funny situations (an old friend from the relentless chatter coming from Naples and the mature aunt and her elderly lover, a young American priest who wants to involve him in his visits to evangelical force, the encounter with Riccardino, a young man frustrated by an oppressive mother and the father waiting for the miracle of re-growth of an amputated hand, etc.) Gaetano decides to stay in Florence and to act as father to Martha's incoming son, even if the girl does not want to disclose the exact name of the father.

"I cento passi" (one hundred steps) was the distance between the Impastatos' house and the house of Tano Badalamenti, an important Mafia boss, in the small Sicilian town of Cinisi. In 1978 Peppino (30 years old) was killed by an explosion. The police archived the case as an accident or a suicide, but his friends never accepted this conclusion. Note: This is a true story. More than twenty years after Peppino's death, the case has been re-opened. Tano Badalamenti, meanwhile, has been convicted in the USA for drug trafficking.
