With the brilliant Vietnamese summer as a setting Vertical Ray of the Sun is beautiful from beginning to end. The plot centres around three sisters, two of whom are happily married (or so it appears). The youngest sister is single and living with her cute older brother, whom she is desperately in love with. A second sister is married to a man who has another woman and child elsewhere whom he loves just as much as his wife -with a few conditions, she agrees to carry on with the marriage. The third sister and her husband are overjoyed to discover she is pregnant, and though he is tempted, her husband remains loyal to her. Charming, slow-paced, face value, family saga film.

Bora the Gypsy is married to an older woman, and he falls in love with the younger Tissa, who is being offered in marriage by her father, to a young gypsy man. This marriage arrangement is according to custom. Tissa rejects her husband, claiming he is not able to consumate the marriage, and Bora joins her. They get a monk in the mountains to marry them. Unable to return to the Gypsy camp, Tissa tries to reach Belgrad on her own, but a couple of truck drivers rape her, and she does return in misery to her tribe. Meanwhile, Bora defends his honour the traditional way, in a knife duwl, and kills his opponent. Therefore he, too, must leave the tribe. And yet, we'll find happy gypsies...

Like the previous movie, "Marfa Girl (2012)", this movie follows the lives of some young, down-and-out characters in the dusty town of Marfa, Texas. The previous film's heroes Adam, Marfa Girl, Inez, Miguel, Donna, and Tomek, all of whom reprise their roles from the original. This time around we follow the group as they deal with a heart-breaking tragedy, one that only further fuels their disaffection, boredom, and desire to break free from their small-town lives. As is expected, the film is filled with sex, drugs, bad decisions, and characters that are hard to shake. Chief among them is the skater Adam, who has two children from two different women, a young Latino slacker who is inexplicably the town's resident sex symbol and apparently irresistible to women; Inez, his live-in lover; and "Marfa Girl", now the mother of a baby boy as the result of a brutal rape.
