Yoshimori and Tokine are just your average kids go to the same school and they also happen to be neighbors. During the day they go their separate ways but at night they both have to go protect the land of Karosumari. A job passed down to them from generations of Kekkaishi in both of their families. The families are 'rivaling' but the two of them get along just fine. At night Yoshimori and Tokine with their demon dogs Hakubi and Madarao, do their best to rid the land of evil. But everything isn't always so simple.

Lala Ru, who can create water--a rarity in that time--using her pendant, is both a savior and a victim in a world where factions are willing to fight and die for her abilities, and at the same time keep her locked up.

The story first starts off around Favaro Leone who is a bounty hunter, collecting money off of bounties he collects (demons). Favaro Leone soon runs into Amira who has no clue what is really going on besides the fact that she must go to "Hellheim", a place where she can go meet her mother. Favaro Leone is then dragged onto this whole quest with her because she had cast a "contract spell" where he now has a demon tail and the only way to get it off is by completing his side of the deal.

Sorey is a human youth who grew up among the seraphim, spiritual beings not visible to humans. Sorey believes in the folklore that says "long ago, every human was able to see the seraphim" and dreams of unraveling the ancient mystery to make the world a place where people and seraphim can live together in peace. One day, Sorey visits the human capital for the very first time. He becomes embroiled in an incident during which he pulls out a holy sword embedded in a rock and ends up becoming a Shepherd, one who casts away calamity from the world. He begins to realize the gravity of his mission, and his dream of coexistence between mankind and the seraphim becomes more intense and thus, the Shepherd embarks on an amazing journey with his companions.

Fuu, a waitress who works in a teahouse, rescues two master swordsmen, Mugen and Jin, from their execution to help her find the "samurai who smells of sunflowers."

Set in an alternate feudal Japan where mechas and giant airships are a common thing for humans to see. With in this time period is a small village that gets raided by bandits during every harvest season. The villagers can't take it anymore, so they decided to send out some volunteers to the city to recruit some samurai to help defend their land. In exchange for defense, the samurai that get hired for the job will receive rice for free of charge. Since the village is too poor to offer any money, the only samurai who would accept their proposal would be the kind who are down on their luck. Will the villagers find any samurai who would help free them from being robbed by bandits?

Gon Freecss is a young boy living on Whale Island. What starts off as a bizarre re-telling of the Chinese legend "Journey to the West" quickly transforms into pure madness.
