The Help

Kathryn Stockett
Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women, mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends, view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't. (jacket flap)

The Heart of Avalon

Rachel Roberts
Kara and Adrian are both level two mages with bonded animals, Adrian has Dreamer and Drake, and her first bonded and now her paladin, Stormbringer. Kara has Lyra, the dragonflies and Starfire her firemental paladin. Emily has been the odd mage out all this time, she hasn’t bonded with any magical animals. But all that changes when her and her friends learn that all the animals in the ocean are sick with a devastating water sickness. This is in the magical realm of course, I’m not sure where exactly, it’s not Aldenmore. Emily meets a strange purple and pink baby sea dragon, who pretty much eats anything magical in sight. Including Emily's healing gem stone. This cute little guy is eventually named Indigo, Indi for short. Indi is a strange little creature that is very attached to Emily, turns out he’s a power crystal that wanted to be in animal form to be with Emily. Indi says “I am for Emilee” several times throughout the book. Cute little guy. He takes the shape of a unicorn knowing Emilys deep love for the creatures. He proudly states “I pretty unicorn!” Several times too, which is too funny and adorable and cute. So Emily goes on an adventure with Indi, and Marlin, prince of the mer folk, in order to save the ocean life from the dreadful water sickness. This book has a lot of adventure in it, and Emily sees a darker and much stronger side to her magic that terrifies her. Apparently out of the three mages one is destined to betray them all and turn dark. I’m actually surprised the last two books haven’t mentioned it yet. One of them turns dark at the end of book eleven, I won’t spoil who it is in this review, I’ll tell you after I read book eleven. It certainly adds a nice twist to the series. On to the dark mage.

Song of the Unicorns

Rachel Roberts
This is my favourite book in the Avalon series by far. In this book Emily, Adrian and Kara fly out to New Mexico to meet Emilys dad and her new stepmom. While on a trail ride Emily senses that an animal is in danger, With the help of Adrian and Dreamer, they discover that a group of thirty baby unicorns are in danger. They were on their way to their academy when a dark creature, the Golem at the end of the book I presume, tries to attack the baby unicorns and the centaurs entrusted with the babies safety. Apparently they fell off a bridge and fell into a portal in New Mexico, what are the chances? The unicorns are still babies haven’t grown their horns yet. The baby unicorns are beautiful, even before their horns grow and their true colours come to life. There’s supposed to a be a princess and prince born in every generation, very interesting, you don’t know who until their horns are tuned. I loved reading about the girls giving them baths and cutting their hair, that was fun to read. I also loved the colour descriptions in this book, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, nothing makes a good book like good colour descriptions. Some of the unicorns are mint green, sunburst orange, lavender, aqua blue, some even sparkle like diamonds. This series is a very colourful read to say the least, and I love it! I’m not a fan of the whole desert scene, but the unicorns definitely made up for it. In this book you also find out that there are nine power crystals missing from Avalon, apparently they were lost when Kara opened the portals and released the magic onto the web. I’m not sure exactly what’s these power crystals do, I think it has something to do with harnessing the magic of Avalon. I’ll find out more in the next books. As it turns out the dark sorceress has some allies in the other world, and she intends in finding the power crystals too. She desperately needs a new hobby. I don’t understand how she could want to destroy such a beautiful world and such wonderful magical creatures. But that’s what a villain does, she’ll get hers in the end. Onto book eight.

Trial By Fire

Rachel Roberts
In trial by fire Emily Adrian and Kara have to go to Aldenmor, which is in desperate need of magical help. They travel along the magic web together but obviously they get separated. You meet new creatures in this book like mer folk and even elves, Ozzie’s kind. The dark sorceress has an evil plan, she’s built three gigantic power crystals to hold a lot of magic, she’s trapped the mist wolves inside the crystals! Because as everyone knows, magic attracts magic. I loved seeing a Drake again, apparently he’s grown a substantial amount since Adrian last saw him. I also loved how Kara tricked the skultum into revealing his true name out loud. Kara Meets B*tween in this book which is apparently a fairy band, they tell her that if she tricks the skultum into saying his name out loud, all his powers will be hers to control. She uses the adorable little dragonflies in a word game to get him to reveal it, very clever. I love those adorable dragonflies, I’d love to have them as pets. You think the dark sorceress would just give up, evil always loses, especially against such good people and animals with powerful bonds. They was definitely more adventure in this book as opposed to the fifth book. And it’s the first time all three girls are in Aldenmor at the same time. Unfortunately a beloved character does die in this book, so very sad. I absolutely loved little Dreamer, a mist wolf pup, he’s too funny when he tries to act tough. Time to read book seven. This one has baby unicorns in it.

Spellsinger

Rachel Roberts
In the fifth book of the series the girls learn the art of spell singing, casting spells through songs. The Ravenswood Wildlife Preserve is holding a benefit concert with a very popular band arriving. Kara gets star struck by Johnny Conrad, the lead singer who’d not all he appears to be. This book was never my favourite even when I read the series years ago. It focuses too much on singing, and I just feel as though there wasn’t a whole lot of action magic wise. At least the third book you get to see the magical world of Aldenmor and learn about Zach and the Ruby dragon. But this book isn’t just about spell singing, according to the Fairimentals, the three mages must “Spell sing as three” obviously the girls have no idea what this means at first. Fairimentals are made of fairy magic, very pure and good magic. They take shapes on earth in forms like wind, earth, water, fire. They always seem to give the mages mysterious messages that they don’t end up figuring out until it’s almost too late, sometimes anyways. Anyways, the dark sorceress is trying to find the home of all magic, Avalon, and she very nearly succeeds in this book. She’s built four giant power crystals, I’m guessing to drain Avalon dry of all it’s magic. I don’t remember Avalon even though I read the series years ago. It seems like a very mysterious place that everyone has heard of, but no one seems to know where it is, figures right? Apparently the unicorns do though as Avalon is their home. Time to read book six.

The Titan's Curse

Rick Riordan
My mother pursed her lips. “I’m telling you that … you’re getting too old for me to tell you what to do. I’m telling you that I’ll support you, even if what you decide to do is dangerous.”And this kind of settles in which direction this third book is heading. If you’re already familiar with Percy Jackson (which I’m pretty certain you are, because otherwise you wouldn’t read this review, right? *lol*) you know that the first two books were fun and had a lot of jokes in them. The third one? Not so much. Whilst it’s true that “The Titan’s Curse” was very entertaining and full of Uncle Rick’s trademark adventures I still have to point out that it was way more serious than its predecessors. ”It’s cool. No sword. See? No sword. Calm thoughts. Sea grass. Mama cows. Vegetarianism.”Yes, we still have Percy’s funny remarks but just like the Harry Potter series this series is growing as well. The characters get older and their quests get more dangerous and grim. The stakes are higher and our characters are forced to realize that not everyone can be saved by a hero. For instance we’re barely a few chapters into the book when Annabeth disappears with the enemy. There’s no trace of her left and for all they know she even might be dead. Not that Percy would consider such an outcome! He has to save Annabeth because he just knows that she’s still alive! ;-) So what to do when you’re stranded on a cliff? Right, you call for the sun gods help to hitch a ride. XD”Wow,” Thalia muttered. “Apollo is hot.”“He’s the sun god,” I said.“That’s not what I meant.” I totally agree with Thalia btw! *lol* I loved that Apollo was a recurring part of this book and I can’t wait to read his series! He seems to be such a fun guy and I was more than just intrigued by his character. <3 Artemis and her Hunters were a great addition to the cast as well, and the Di Angelo twins? I think we’ll read more about them in future books! ;-) I’m really looking forward to this because I already like little Nico and took him to my heart! The true star of this story is Bessie the cow serpent though and if you don’t know who that is you better read the book and find out! *lol*”This is why I don’t use mortals,” Luke said. “They are unreliable.”“They are weak-minded, easily bought, and violent,” the General said. “I love them.” But of course there need to be real enemies in “The Titan’s Curse” as well and this time around they are pretty decent and smart. Next to Luke we have to face the General and this adversary is as dangerous and cunning as they come. Knowing my myths I wasn’t surprised about the story behind the man, but as a kid I probably would have been shocked. *lol* (view spoiler)[I mean the book is named “The Titan’s Curse” and Annabeth and Artemis have to hold up a mountain. Does this ring a bell? If you paid attention at school you must have figured out that the General is Atlas so that big revelation didn’t hit me as hard as it would have when I was younger. Who knew education could take away some of your enjoyment? *lol* (hide spoiler)]
