The Blood Divine were a British gothic metal band, founded in the summer of 1995 by Paul Allender, brothers Paul and Benjamin Ryan, and Darren White. Allender and the brothers Ryan had recently left Cradle of Filth after the release of The Principle of Evil Made Flesh and White had recently parted ways with Anathema. They recruited drummer William A. 'W.A.S.' Sarginson and bassist Steve Maloney and were quickly signed up by Peaceville Records.

Moonspell is a Portuguese gothic metal band formed in 1992. The group released their first EP, Under the Moonspell, in 1994 and followed up with their debut album, Wolfheart, a year later. They quickly became the most recognizable metal band from Portugal and a key figure in gothic metal.

Novembre is an Italian doom metal band, formed in Rome in 1990.

Autumnblaze (engl.: Herbstflammenmeer) ist eine melancholische Rock-/Metal-Band aus Illingen, die 1996 von Markus Baltes und Christian Seibert gegründet wurde und anfänglich lediglich Studio- und Nebenprojekt zu ihrer Hauptband Paragon of Beauty war. Stilistisch lässt sich die Musik von Autumnblaze nur sehr schwer zuordnen.

Auf dem ersten Album DämmerElbenTragödie (1999) spielt Autumnblaze noch melancholisch/melodischen Epic Metal. Das zweite Album Bleak (2000) erinnerte, dominiert von melancholisch düsteren, klaustrophobischen Doom-Metal-/Trip-Hop-Klängen, eher an eine Mischung aus Katatonia und Portishead.

Im Frühjahr 2002 folgte das Album Mute Boy Sad Girl. Die Trip-Hop-Beats wurden mehr und mehr in den Vordergrund gedrängt und man arbeitete vermehrt mit experimentellen Keyboard- und Piano-Klängen. Das Album wurde zum Album des Monats im deutschen Musik-Magazin Orkus gekürt.

Cemetery of Scream – polska grupa muzyczna wykonująca gothic metal z wpływami doom metalu. Powstała 1993 roku w Krakowie. Do 2009 roku grupa wydała pięć albumów studyjnych pozytywnie ocenianych zarówno przez publiczność i jak i krytyków muzycznych. Cemetery of Scream w swej twórczości odnosi się do takich zagadnień jak apokalipsa, depresja, melancholia i smutek.

Zespół powstał w 1993 roku w Krakowie z inicjatywy gitarzysty Marcina Piwowarczyka i perkusisty Grzegorza Książka. Muzycy zaprosili do współpracy basistę Jacka Królika i wokalistę Marcina Kotasia. W tym składzie grupa nagrała debiutanckie demo zatytułowane Sameone. Wydana przez Croon Records kaseta spotkała się z pozytywnym przyjęciem na lokalnej scenie muzycznej. Jesienią 1993 roku do Cemetery of Scream dołączył gitarzysta Artur Oleszkiewicz oraz keyboardzistka Kasia Rachwalik.

October Tide is a Swedish death/doom metal band that was created in 1994 by Katatonia vocalist Jonas Renkse and then-Katatonia guitarist Fred Norrman. Norrman revived the band after leaving Katatonia in 2009.

October Tide's debut album, Rain Without End, was recorded in 1995 and released on Vic Records in 1997. During this period October Tide maintained a low profile, deciding not to tour or give any interviews.

October Tide's second album, Grey Dawn, was released in 1999 by Avantgarde Music. The band enlisted Mårten Hansen of A Canorous Quintet to replace Renkse on vocals. The album was remastered and re-released by Peaceville Records in 2007. After the release of Grey Dawn, October Tide disbanded.

Saturnus are a Danish band formed in 1991. They play melodic death/doom with synthesized touches of gothic metal.

Saturnus released their third full-length album, Veronika Decides to Die, in May 2006. The album title was inspired by Paulo Coelho's novel of the same name. Prior to 2006, Saturnus had released two other albums, Paradise Belongs To You and Martyre, in addition to an EP, For The Loveless Lonely Nights.

On April 9, 2012, Saturnus posted on their Facebook page:

"Tomorrow we begin recording for the new album 'Saturn In Ascension', with 'Flemming Rasmussen' once again behind the mixer. We are looking forward to this [launching of the album 'Saturn in Ascension']. Bass and drums are the first things that will be recorded over the coming days, we will keep you posted on the development."

Heavenwood ist eine portugiesische Metalband, die 1992 von Ernesto Guerra (Gesang), Ricardo Dias (Gitarre), Mario Lui Lemos (Gitarre), Rui Santos (Bass; beging 1995 Suizid), João Soares (Keyboard) und Jose Barbosa (Schlagzeug) in Vila Nova de Gaia unter dem Namen Disgorged gegründet wurde und ursprünglich Death Metal spielte.

Nachdem sich Bassist Rui Santos 1995 das Leben nahm und durch Bruno Silva ersetzt wurde, änderten sie ihren Namen in Heavenwood und unterschrieben einen Vertrag mit dem deutschen Metal-Label Massacre Records. Zur selben Zeit änderte sich der Musikstil in Richtung Gothic Metal.

1996 erschien das Debütalbum Diva unter Massacre Records. Kurz darauf ging die Band mit Atrocity, Theatre of Tragedy und Lake of Tears auf Tour. Dabei spielte die Band in fast ganz Europa. Mit Swallow erschien 1998 das zweite Album. Für die Aufnahmen stießen Liv Kristine (Leaves’ Eyes) und Kai Hansen (u. a. Helloween/Gamma Ray) als Gastmusiker zur Band. Die Band ging auf Europa-Tour um das Album zu promoten.

The Vision Bleak is a German gothic metal duo comprising Ulf Theodor Schwadorf (famous for his work with Empyrium and Noekk) and Allen B. Konstanz. The group's lyrics are noted for their horror themes and heavily allude to works of classic writers/filmmakers of the genre, such as H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, George A. Romero and John Carpenter, among others. They self-describe their musical style, which mixes gothic metal, doom metal, symphonic metal and horror punk aesthetics, as "horror metal".

The Vision Bleak was formed in 2000, in the Bavarian city of Mellrichstadt, by Markus Stock (a.k.a. Ulf Theodor Schwadorf) and Tobias Schönemann (a.k.a. Allen B. Konstanz). Their first release was the independent extended play Songs of Good Taste, which came out in 2001 and contained, among other tracks, a cover of The Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin". The EP caught the attention of Prophecy Productions, who approached them to record their first full-length, The Deathship Has a New Captain, on 23 February 2004; counting with a guest appearance by Dark Sanctuary vocalist Dame Pandora, it would be their first of many releases under the Prophecy label. A teaser EP containing two tracks which would eventually appear on the album was released the year prior.

The Old Dead Tree was a progressive death metal band from the city of Paris, France active between 1997 and 2019.

Katatonia is a Swedish heavy metal band formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The band started as a studio-only project for the duo, as an outlet for the band's love of death metal. Increasing popularity led them to add more band members for live performances, though outside of the band's founders, the lineup was a constantly changing, revolving door of musicians throughout the 1990s, notably including Mikael Åkerfeldt of the band Opeth for a period. After two death/doom albums, Dance of December Souls (1993) and Brave Murder Day (1996), problems with Renkse's vocal cords coupled with new musical influences led the band away from the screamed vocals of death metal to a more traditional, melodic form of heavy metal music.

Draconian is a Swedish gothic/doom metal band formed in Säffle in 1994.

Lake of Tears is a Swedish heavy metal band originally formed in 1994, generally considered to play gothic metal/gothic rock and doom metal. However, their sound has expanded to include psychedelic rock and progressive rock elements. The band broke up in 2000 amid creative differences, but reunited in late 2003, releasing the acclaimed album Black Brick Road. They released their eighth studio album, Illwill, in April 2011. In 2014 they released their first live album, By the Black Sea. The band's newest album, titled Ominous, was released on 18 February 2021.

Lake of Tears was founded in the early 1990s by Daniel Brennare, Jonas Eriksson, Mikael Larsson and Johan Oudhuis. Their first album, entitled Greater Art, was released through the record label Black Mark Production in 1994. The album is doom metal featuring coarse, ragged vocals and crushing guitars. The band would subsequently steer away from such a directly categorized style, only revisiting it on their 2011 release Illwill.

On Thorns I Lay (previously known as Paralysis, then Phlebotomy) is a Greek death-doom metal band founded in Athens in 1992.

They started as a death metal band under the name of Paralysis. Together with bands such as Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh, Necromantia, and Nightfall they started to spread their name in the local and global underground scene. In 1993 they changed their name to Phlebotomy and released the EP Dawn Of Grief. The next year they recorded the Voluptuous demo which drew the attention of Holy Records label.

In 1994, they again changed their name to 'On Thorns I Lay' in reference to Shakespeare. (The name was suggested by their friend, Nightfall's vocalist/bassist Efthimis Karadimas) and released their first album Sounds of Beautiful Experience, which was closer to the death/doom style. Through the years the band's music evolved to include gothic metal elements.

Paradise Lost is an English gothic metal band that formed in 1988 in Halifax, considered to be among the pioneers of the death-doom genre, and regarded as the main influence for the later gothic metal movement. Bands that have cited Paradise Lost as an influence, or have covered them, include My Dying Bride, Anathema, The Gathering, Amorphis, Cradle of Filth, Katatonia, Moonspell, Lacuna Coil, HIM, Nightwish and many others. As of 2005, Paradise Lost have sold over two million albums worldwide.
