Tesseract are an English progressive metal band from Milton Keynes. The band, formed in 2003, consists of Daniel Tompkins, Alec "Acle" Kahney, James Monteith, Amos Williams and Jay Postones. The band is currently signed to Kscope. They are credited as one of the bands to pioneer the djent movement in progressive metal. As of 2022, Tesseract have released four studio albums: One, Altered State, Polaris and Sonder, as well as two live albums, Odyssey/Scala and Portals, and the extended plays Concealing Fate, Perspective and Errai.

There seems to be disagreement about how djent began. Djent started on www.tandjent.com/meshforum around 2005 when Bulb, Chimp Spanner, Vildhjarta, TesseracT, and Fellsilent all started uploading clips. Both the website and the named bands need to be reflected in the article. 94.245.127.15

Those subgenres listed in the 'stylistic origins' section are probably the main sources of the movement's development, but is it worth including a section describing the range of stylistic influences incorporated by different bands? E.g. Some are more heavily influenced by metalcore/deathcore than others, some veer towards tech-death, some may be classed as post-hardcore and industrial, etc. It just seems to me that there's too much variety within the movement to sum it up so simplistically.86.150.137.196 (talk) 00:28, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

The Contortionist is an American progressive metal band from Indianapolis, Indiana. Formed in 2007, the band consists of guitarists Robby Baca and Cameron Maynard, drummer Joey Baca, vocalist Mike Lessard, bassist Jordan Eberhardt, and keyboardist Eric Guenther. They have released four studio albums and three EPs. The band signed with eOne Music and Good Fight Entertainment in early 2010.

The Contortionist formed in 2007 under the name At the Hands of Machines with vocalist Jake Morris, guitarists Roby Baca and Cameron Maynard, bassist Christopher Tilley, and drummer Joey Baca. The band's first release, the EP Sporadic Movements, was released later that year. At the Hands of Machines changed their name to The Contortionist following the EP's release and the same line-up recorded the EP Shapeshifter, which was released in September 2008. These two EPs featured a deathcore sound in contrast to the band's later works. Following the release of Shapeshifter, vocalist Jake Morris left the band and was replaced by Dave Hoffman, who also provided keyboards. The band entered Voltaic Recording Studio in early 2009 and released their third EP, Apparition, in September of that year. The sound of this EP continued the deathcore sound heard with Morris, but also showed the band incorporating elements of progressive metal into its music.

Black Crown Initiate is an American extreme metal band from Reading, Pennsylvania, United States, currently signed to Century Media. The band formed in 2012 and self-released their first EP Song of the Crippled Bull, which was met with positive reviews. They began touring in early 2014 with fellow extreme metal bands such as Goatwhore, Behemoth, and 1349; this led to them being signed by eOne Music in June 2014. With eOne, they released both The Wreckage of Stars, released on September 30, 2014, and Selves We Cannot Forgive, released on July 22, 2016. Their third studio album, Violent Portraits of Doomed Escape, was released with Century Media on August 7, 2020.

Obscura is a German technical death metal band from Landshut, founded by guitarist and vocalist Steffen Kummerer in 2002. The band have released six studio albums, a compilation album and eleven music videos since its formation. Their latest album A Valediction was released on 19 November 2021 via Nuclear Blast.

Obscura was formed in late 2002 by guitarist Steffen Kummerer, drummer Jonas Baumgartl, guitarist Armin Seitz and bassist/vocalist Martin Ketzer with the name Illegimitation. Performing local shows, the band booked their own concept tour in Bavaria called "Blasting Bavaria Tour" in 2003, followed by editions in 2004, 2005 and 2007. The band recorded their first and only self titled demo in November 2003 with producer V.Santura (Triptykon, Pestilence, Dark Fortress). The demo contained four songs, received positive feedback within southern Germany and took root in underground circles. In early 2004, both Ketzer and Seitz left the band. On second guitar, Stephan Bergbauer joined to record their debut album in Summer 2004.

Bulletrain is a Swedish heavy metal band formed in the suburbs of Helsingborg in 2006 by drummer Jonas Tillheden and guitarist Mattias Persson, together with singer Robert Lindell, bassist Tim Svalo and later guitarist Robin Bengtsson. The band is influenced by bands like Mötley Crüe, Guns N' Roses, Skid Row and Pantera.

In 2007 the band released their first EP Johnny GoneBad, produced by Klas Ideberg from Helsingborgs band Darkane. It was well received and led to the band getting gigs locally as the opening act for bands such as: Crashdïet, Bullet and Crazy Lixx. In the fall of 2009 the band released in their second EP Turn It Up! again produced by Klas Ideberg.

In the autumn of 2009, however, the band had its first setback when bassist Tim Svalo quit. He was replaced by Emil Lundberg. The first real milestone for the band came in the spring of 2010 when they were involved in the "Rest In Sleaze" festival, dedicated to the former lead singer from Crashdïet: Dave Lepard, who had died. That show resulted in a minor tour of Italy and also in an offer from musician/producer Chris Laney(Crashdïet, Crazy Lixx) to record a single for the band. On July 16, 2010 they recorded the songs Even With My Eyes Closed and Take Me To The Sun in Polar Studios in Stockholm. Bass was played by Therions bassist Nalle Pahlsson because bassist Emil Lundberg had decided to leave the band the day before the recording in Stockholm.

The HAARP Machine ist eine multinationale Band um den in London wohnhaften Musiker Abdullah Al Mu’min, welche ursprünglich unter dem Namen HAARP gegründet wurde. Sie verbindet Elemente des Progressive Metal mit fernöstlichen Klängen und wird der Djent-Bewegung zugeschrieben.

Im Jahre 2007 gründete der Musiker Abdullah Al Mu’min das Solo-Projekt HAARP. Nach mehreren Demoaufnahmen zwischen den Jahren 2007 und 2009 kontaktierte er im Herbst 2009 den Schlagzeuger Dan Foord der ein Jahr zuvor aufgelösten Band SikTh, der sich bereit erklärte, die Schlagzeug-Parts für Al Mu’mins Lieder zu schreiben. Jedoch konnte dieser der Band nicht als Vollzeit-Mitglied beitreten, weshalb sich Al Mu’min kurz darauf mit dem Schlagzeuger Craig Reynolds in Verbindung setzte, der die Schlagzeug-Parts von Dan Foord noch einmal vollständig neu schrieb und, nachdem sich seine vorherige Band Viatrophy aufgelöst hatte, als vollständiges Mitglied der Band hinzustieß.

The Faceless are an American technical death metal band from the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles. They released their debut album, Akeldama, in November 2006, and a follow-up, Planetary Duality, in November 2008. The band's third album, Autotheism, was released on August 14, 2012. On December 1, 2017, the band released their fourth album, In Becoming a Ghost.

The band was formed in Encino by guitarist Michael Keene and bassist Brandon Giffin in 2004. In the winter of 2005, the band began work on a four-song extended-play album which would become Akeldama. After recording the drum tracks, drummer Brett Batdorf left the band. After a break in the recording process, the band decided to make the EP into a full–length record and recruited several drummers to finish the drum tracks for the remaining songs.

Periphery is an American progressive metal band formed in Washington, D.C., in 2005. Their musical style has been described as progressive metal, djent, and progressive metalcore. They are considered one of the pioneers of the djent movement within progressive metal. They have also received a Grammy nomination. The band consists of vocalist Spencer Sotelo, guitarists Misha Mansoor, Mark Holcomb, Jake Bowen, and drummer Matt Halpern.

Hacride is a French progressive metal band. Formed in 2001 with musicians coming from an array of different bands, musical backgrounds and styles their sound has evolved from the raw extremities and odd time signatures of technical death metal to one that is more progressive and avant-garde.

Hacride was formed in 2001 in the French city of Poitiers by Benoist Danneville (bass), Adrien Grousset (guitar), Samuel Bourreau (vocals) and Olivier Laffond (drums). In 2003 they released their first promo CD entitled Cyanide Echoes, then produced with Matthieu Metzger.

In 2005, the band appeared on the compilation Revolution Calling with the song "The Daily Round" through record label Listenable Records. In the same year they recorded their first full-length album called Deviant Current Signal and released it with the same record label. The band promoted this album in France and Switzerland through Deviant Tours I and II. They also took part in the VS Fest II at Loco in Paris on May 28, 2006.

Animals as Leaders is an American instrumental progressive metal band from Washington, D.C. It currently consists of guitarists Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes and drummer Matt Garstka, having been formed by Abasi in 2007. They are a prominent band within the djent scene. Prosthetic Records released the band's eponymous debut album in 2009. They went on to release the albums Weightless (2011), The Joy of Motion (2014), The Madness of Many (2016), and Parrhesia (2022).

Animals as Leaders formed after guitarist Tosin Abasi's previous metalcore band, Reflux, disbanded. The heavy metal record label Prosthetic Records saw Abasi's guitar work and asked him to create a solo album for them. Abasi initially declined, feeling such an endeavor would be "...egotistical and unnecessary." Abasi decided to take a year off to study music, as he felt he was unable to reach his peak at guitar playing. After Abasi had completed his course, he took up the label on the offer of a solo project. The name Animals as Leaders was inspired by Daniel Quinn's 1992 novel Ishmael, which addresses anthropocentrism. Abasi coined the name as a reminder "that we're all essentially animals".

Xerath were an English heavy metal band from Basingstoke, Hampshire. Formed in 2007, the band gained international recognition after the release of their debut album I (One) via Candlelight Records in 2009, a record label they stuck with throughout their existence.

The Algorithm is the musical project of French musician Rémi Gallego from Perpignan. His style is characterised by an unusual combination of electronic dance music with progressive metal. Gallego chose the name The Algorithm to highlight the music's complex and electronic nature.

Soundwave was an annual music festival held in major cities around Australia, run and promoted by Soundwave Touring. The festival originated in Perth, Western Australia, and began travelling to the other Australian capital cities in 2007. It featured a number of international and Australian music acts from various genres, including rock, metal and punk. The festival has been headlined by Deftones, the Offspring, Incubus, Alice in Chains, Bloodhound Gang, Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More, Jimmy Eat World, Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden, Iron Maiden, Queens of the Stone Age, the Smashing Pumpkins, System of a Down, Slipknot, Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park, Blink-182 and Metallica.

Meshuggah is a Swedish extreme metal band formed in Umeå in 1987. The band's current lineup consists of lead vocalist Jens Kidman, guitarists Fredrik Thordendal and Mårten Hagström, drummer Tomas Haake and bassist Dick Lövgren. Since its formation, the band has released nine studio albums, six EPs and eight music videos. Their latest studio album, Immutable, was released in April 2022 via Atomic Fire Records.

Textures were a Dutch progressive metalcore band, formed in 2001. Textures' lineup revolved around founding members Jochem Jacobs, Stef Broks, Bart Hennephof, and bassist Remko Tielemans who joined in 2007. Since 2010, vocalist Daniël de Jongh and keyboardist Uri Dijk have been with the band.

Textures first came to the spotlight with their debut album Polars with Listenable Records which won an Essent Award for "Most Promising Act" in 2004. Since then, the band released 2 more albums with Listenable Records, 2006's Drawing Circles and 2008's Silhouettes after signing to Nuclear Blast records.

In 2001, Jochem Jacobs, guitarist Bart Hennephof, drummer Stef Broks, bassist Dennis Aarts and keyboard player Richard Rietdijk formed the band and were joined by vocalist Pieter Verpaalen for their debut album Polars with Listenable Records. The album was fully self produced, with the mixing and recording done by Jacobs and Rietdijk and the artwork done by Hennephof.

Fallujah is an American technical death metal band from San Francisco, California, formed in 2007. Fallujah has toured with acts such as The Black Dahlia Murder, Carnifex, Thy Art Is Murder, Dying Fetus, Between the Buried and Me, and The Contortionist.

Fallujah was founded in early 2007 by high school friends Alex Hofmann, Scott Carstairs, Tommy Logan, Dan Wissinger, and Suliman Arghandiwal. The band name comes from the Iraqi city of Fallujah, located in the Al Anbar province. Prior to the band signing to its first record label, early vocalist Suliman Arghandiwal, guitarist Anthony Borges, and bassists Dan Wissinger and Brandon Hoberg exited the band. Replacing Arghandiwal, guitarist Alex Hofmann took up vocals with Rob Maramonte joining the band as the new guitarist. In 2009, the band released their first demo release, immediately followed by their first EP titled Leper Colony released on January 17. On February 5, 2010, the band played their first professional concert in Sacramento, California.

Uneven Structure is a progressive metal band based in Metz, France. They play a style of post-metal which is heavily influenced by the Swedish extreme metal band Meshuggah. The band blends polyrhythmic passages and extremely low tunings with a heavily layered production style and ambient soundscapes. They are often categorized in the djent movement due to the Meshuggah-like guitar tone they often employ. The band was formed after the split of Longchat, a band which featured Igor Omodei and Benoit Friedrich.
