Thomas Veil is a documentary photographer who, in the course of one evening, seemingly has his whole existence erased. It appears as if some mysterious and powerful entity has coerced Veil's family and friends into cooperating in a clandestine plan to annul every trace of him. Jim Phelps is the head of a super-secret government agency ("Impossible Mission Force"), and is often given secret anonymous covert missions to attempt; quite often they are unmasking of criminals or rescuing of hostages. He picks his team depending on which tasks need to be done. One thing is vital on an Impossible Mission: the mission must be carried out in entire secrecy, often relying on high-tech equipment and elaborate deceptions. Walter Carlson was their sympathetic boss at KLAE.

Overwhelmed by the brutal murder of her mentor and friend, Dr. Ann Coulter, young bioanthropologist Dr. Sloan Parker continues Coulter's secret DNA research at Whitney University in Southern California. Coulter believed global warming spawned a brilliant new species of human that is determined to eliminate Homo sapiens, just as Homo sapiens has, in its perception of manifest destiny, killed off competing species.
