Baby Annie (Kathy and Leslie Anderson) is H.I.V. positive and has been left in the clinic by her drug addicted mother, Linda (Mary-Louise Parker). During the story, she reflects on her reactions to the cycle the cancer takes, the treatments, and significant events in her life. The people that watch over her are Dr. Jason Posner (Jonathan M. Woodward), who only finds faith in being a doctor; Susie Monahan (Audrey McDonald), a nurse with a human side that is the only one in the hospital that cares for Vivian's condition; and Dr. Harvey Kelekian (Christopher Lloyd), the head doctor who just wants results no matter what they are.

In 1900 12 year old Leo Colston spends a blisteringly hot summer with the wealthy family of class-mate Marcus Maudsley at their Norfolk estate. When Marcus falls ill Leo is befriended by the daughter of the house, the glamorous, captivating Marian, who is to be engaged to disfigured Boer War veteran, the kindly Hugh Trimingham. In 1973, documentary filmmaking brothers

1944. World War II. Denver. Livy Dunne has essentially been thrown out of her home by her stern father, Rev. Dunne, because she's pregnant and unmarried. When she arrives in tiny Wilson, Colorado, Livy and her "betrothed," gentle but strong Ray Singleton, are wary around each other. Livy befriends two Japanese-American girls who have been interned with their parents at a nearby camp; Florence and Rose are smart and beautiful. They end up teaching Livy a valuable lesson about life and love. Livy has her baby, elects to stay with Ray, and as she tells her sister-in-law, "I've learned more about love in my six months with this family than in the 25 in my father's home."

Katherine Ann Watson has accepted a position teaching art history at the prestigious Wellesley College. Watson is a very modern woman, particularly for the 1950s, and has a passion not only for art but for her students. For the most part, the students all seem to be biding their time, waiting to find the right man to marry. The students are all very bright and Watson feels they are not reaching their potential. Altough a strong bond is formed between teacher and student, Watson's views are incompatible with the dominant culture of the college.

Lily is dying and by the end of this weekend, she'll be dead. She suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and is planning to pursue euthanasia with the help of her husband Paul and invites her family and her longtime best friend Liz to the house so they can spend her final days together. But there's tension between her daughters, the uptight Jennifer and the wayward Anna, and it threatens to destroy her perfectly laid-out plan.

Siddalee Walker (Sandra Bullock), a famous New York City playwright, is quoted in Time Magazine and infuriates her dramatic, Southern mother. A long-distant fight wages until her mother's friends (and members of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood) kidnap Siddalee and take her "home" to the South, where they hope to explain her mother's history and to patch up the rift between mother and daughter.
