Gifts
Ursula K. Le Guin
Scattered among poor, desolate farms, the clans of the Uplands possess gifts. Wondrous gifts: the ability—with a glance, a gesture, a word—to summon animals, bring forth fire, move the land. Fearsome gifts: They can twist a limb, chain a mind, inflict a wasting illness. The Uplanders live in constant fear that one family might unleash its gift against another. Two young people, friends since childhood, decide not to use their gifts. One, a girl, refuses to bring animals to their death in the hunt. The other, a boy, wears a blindfold lest his eyes and his anger kill. In this beautifully crafted story, Ursula K. Le Guin writes of the proud cruelty of power, of how hard it is to grow up, and of how much harder still it is to find, in the world's darkness, gifts of light.

The Charwoman's Shadow
Lord Dunsany
Do not let the uninspired (and uninspiring) cover of the Del Rey edition to keep you away from this masterpiece, an exquisite counterpart for the first Shadow Valley chronicle. This time the protagonist follows not the ways of the sword, as Don Rodriguez did in the first chronicle, but the ways of the sorcery.Extremely well written, very suspensfull, surprisingly funny and dark enough, „Charwoman`s Shadow” offers us also two great classic characters (and archetypes!): the plump, benevolent and sharp-minded Father Joseph, and the beautiful, seductive, smart and „deeply superficial”, yet honorable Mirandola. One word: AMAZING.NB This 1926 book is featuring a duel between a young apprentice and a Galactic Master of Magic, Chill and Shadows, who uses a sword of light to wound the hand and to set on fire the arm of the young apprentice. It may be no great surprise for the reader to find out that the young apprentice, though going most of the book by the name of Ramon Alonzo, was also baptized „Luke”.

Lud-in-the-Mist
Neil Gaiman, Hope Mirrlees
Lud-in-the-Mist, the capital city of the small country Dorimare, is a port at the confluence of two rivers, the Dapple and the Dawl. The Dapple has its origin beyond the Debatable Hills to the west of Lud-in-the-Mist, in Fairyland. In the days of Duke Aubrey, some centuries earlier, fairy things had been looked upon with reverence, and fairy fruit was brought down the Dapple and enjoyed by the people of Dorimare. But after Duke Aubrey had been expelled from Dorimare by the burghers, the eating of fairy fruit came to be regarded as a crime, and anything related to Fairyland was unspeakable. Now, when his son Ranulph is believed to have eaten fairy fruit, Nathaniel Chanticleer, the mayor of Lud-in-the-Mist, finds himself looking into old mysteries in order to save his son and the people of his city.
