Alice is an Italian philosopher and activist. For three years the 31-year-old woman has been traveling between her hometown Palermo and Cologne. Whilst in Germany the prospect of a secure professorship awaits her within a year, she nevertheless feels committed to her home country. As soon as she is back there she gets involved in various organizations and begins to fight actively against injustice. She becomes particularly involved in helping Africans who are living illegally in Palermo. She helps them with applications, organizes sleeping shelters and corresponds with employers - for example when wages are not paid or working conditions become too poor. However, Alice's main preoccupations are the open doors of Africa: She expects an uncontrollable influx of people from all over Africa to Italy, Spain and Greece, where every helping hand will be needed to avoid escalation of tension between refugees and the local population.

Carefully picked scenes of nature and civilization are viewed at high speed using time-lapse cinematography in an effort to demonstrate the history of various regions.

Volcanoes, earthquakes, and tornadoes all can cause enormous damage, and predicting where and when they will strike is of great importance. Volcanologist Dr. Marie Edmonds has devised sensors that monitor the underground activity of magma to better predict future eruptions on the Caribbean island of Monserrat, the site of the massive 1995 eruption captured for this film. Geophysicist Dr. Ross Stein studied the earthquake repair records in Istanbul's Hagia Sophia over the centuries to find clues about the history of earthquakes in Turkey. He discovers a pattern in quakes along the long North Anatolian Fault system, including the massively destructive quake at Izmit in 1999, and predicts the next earthquake just a few miles south of Istanbul. Dr. Joshua Wurman and his team chase tornados in trucks equipped with Doppler radar in an attempt to probe the interior of a tornado just as it is born.

Documentary about a community of free-willed citizens in Estonia's capital Tallinn, who decide to start shaping their own district with grassroots combat tactics against the city government. At first they are a united front but soon inner conflicts erupt and the commune has to face a new challenge. After the first battles are won, the next actions are more administrative and not all the rebels want to submit themselves to the new order. Can they still keep together or will the "New World" commune fall apart?

As a visual narrative 66 scener fra America is reminiscent of a pile of postcards from a journey, which indeed is what the film is. It consists of a series of lengthy shots of a tableau nature, each appearing to be a more or less random cross section of American reality, but which in total invoke a highly emblematic picture of the USA. With the one travelling shot (through a car windscreen) and one pan (across a landscape) the tableau principle is only breached on two occasions; exceptions that prove the rule, so to speak. The images or postcards may be viewed as a number of interlaced chains of motifs, varying from ultra close up to super wide, include pictures of landscapes, highways and advertising hoardings, buildings seen from without, mostly with a fluttering Stars and Stripes somewhere in the shot, objects such as coins on a counter, refrigerator with a number of typical food products, a plate of food at a diner or a bottle of Wild Turkey, and finally, people who introduce themselves (and sometimes the content of their lives in rough-hewn form) facing the camera: for example, the New York cabbie or the celebrities Kim Larsen and Andy Warhol. The film actually consists of 75 shots but in some cases several shots combine in one scene, thus ending on sixty six. Each scene is delimited by the narrator; at the end of each shot he pins down the picture content, often by a simple indication of time or place, but in some cases more playfully, often shifting our perception in a surprising fashion. Similarly the sound close-ups in some scenes are intended to alter the viewer's immediate interpretation of the picture content, while the mood-creating or interpretive use of Erik Satie's Gnossiennes (No. 5) provides the final component of the film.

As one of the seminal figures in the Pop Art era, Johnson is known as the founding father of mail art and as a collagist extraordinaire. But, overshadowed by those like Warhol who manipulated that world in a very dissimilar manner, he was also a reclusive and sometimes enigmatic figure who has been called New York's most famous unknown artist, but who challenged the commercial and critical establishment.

The L.A. freeway system just keeps growing and growing, and director Jacob Thuesen attempts to capture the rhythm of the expanding freeway system. As in his prize-winning portrait of the New York subway system, "Under New York" (1996), Thuesen is using curiosity and wonder as a driving force, following the many people, who drive the freeway and those who in vain try to control it. The result is a film filled with small absurd situations, and whose fragments at the end form a larger pattern.
