Michael Long is an undercover cop who is seriously wounded during his assignment. Nursed back to health by a mysterious benefactor (chairman and CEO of Knight Industries), he regains consciousness as a new man with a new face and a new name: Michael Knight. His mysterious benefactor (through the guise of associate Devon Miles) provides Michael with equipment and support so that he can continue his crime fighting against those who operate above the law. The most notable piece of equipment supplied, is "KITT", an indestructible, high-performance car fitted with artificial intelligence.

Considered one of the most violent television series of its era, this show followed the adventures of Los Angeles, California private investigator Joe Mannix, who first worked for a detective agency known as Intertect, which relied heavily on computers and a large network of operatives. In the second season, Mannix opened his own agency, with police widow Peggy Fair working for him as his secretary. Each episode featured plenty of fistfights, car chases, and shoot-outs.

Max (Lionel Stander) was their loyal, gravelly-voiced butler, cook, and chauffeur, and Freeway their pet canine.

Known as Pete to his friends and simply as Gunn to his enemies, he did his job in a calm cool way. He got his tips and cautions from Lieutenant Jacoby, a coffee drinking pal from the police. Also providing tips was "Mother" of her self-titled nightclub. Working at the nightclub as a singer was Edie Hart, his girlfriend.

Dr. Daniel Westin was a scientist working with a government thinktank known as the KLAE Corporation who was rendered invisible by a formula concocted by himself that was supposed to be used for matter transformation. Before he can return to normal, Westin discovers the federal government has plans to use his invisibility formula for warlike purposes, so he destroys the only formula. Unfortunately he has no way to become visible again, so, wearing a very realistic face mask and hands, he becomes an agent for KLAE, fighting crime and battling saboteurs, while simultaneously working in KLAE's laboratory with wife Kate to rediscover his formula. Walter Carlson was their sympathetic boss at KLAE.

He then wakes up and discovers he is reliving the day again. And armed with what little info he learned from the day before, he tries to find out why he is being framed. But comes up short but when the day ends he relives it again and again.
