Anne Shirley, now a schoolteacher, has begun writing stories and collecting rejection slips. She makes the acquaintance of a handsome, rich, bachelor, (jumping to a wrong conclusion, she and Diana chased down Rachel Lynde's cow, thinking it was Dolly) & immediately sold it to John Blythe. [When she realizes her fault, Anne & Marilla do a special visit to Rachel Lynde & her longtime husband, Thomas. During this visit, Thomas Lynde dies & Rachel Lynde became a widow!] and wins (to her chagrin) Rolling's Reliable baking soda (that was forged by Diana) company's writing contest. She acts as Diana's maid of honor, and refuses Gilbert Blythe's marriage proposal; which sends her to teach Kingsport Ladies' College, an exclusive all girl students' school, where she meets opposition from the principal, Miss Katherine Brooke, and the Pringle clan (one of whom is the rich, handsome bachelor). But while Anne won the numerous conflicts & battles, and the friends she makes, she returns to Avonlea.

The King family have lived in a small farming community called Avonlea on Prince Edward Island for generations. In the early 1900s, the eldest of the five King siblings, Hetty (Jackie Burroughs), oversees the goings-on in the family and ensures everything runs to her high and rigid standards. Eldest brother, Alec (Cedric Smith), and his family run the King farm. Youngest sister Olivia (Mag Ruffman), who still is treated as the baby by the others despite being a grown woman, is the third of the siblings still living in Avonlea. Two additions from the King family arrive somewhat unexpectedly to stay on the King property, one being Andrew King (Joel Blake), the son of third eldest Roger, who is off travelling the world as a renowned geologist. The other arrival is Sara Stanley (Sarah Polley), the only daughter of fourth eldest, but deceased, Ruth, who was the rebellious one in the family. Before Sara's arrival in Avonlea, the Stanleys were estranged from their Avonlea King relations. Sara is sent to stay with her relatives because her father, Blair Stanley (Robert Collins), wants to protect her from a potential scandal he is facing associated with his business in Montréal, Québec. Sara in particular will have to make many adjustments from her privileged Montréal life to survive emotionally in rural Avonlea without her father.

"Detective McLean" revolves around Allison McLean (Kelli Williams), a tough and experienced police detective, mother and wife in suburban Seattle. When she and her police partner (Dion Johnstone) must arrest her brother (Luke Perry) for aggravated assault, her world drastically changes as he's convicted and sent to prison, leaving his two teenagers teetering on the brink of foster care. Ultimately, she takes them into her home, ending up with four teenagers to raise as well as her demanding job solving local crimes.

After the death of his wife Sarah, John West (Baldwin) packs up his three children and transports them from their hectic urban life to his small northern hometown to take command of the local search-and-rescue service. Once there, the family struggles with their new surroundings, new friends, and accepting Sarah's death. The children's aunt (Robertson), helps them and John heal as she copes with the loss of her sister and her desire to have her own family.
