After their father runs off with his teenage mistress, Sophie and Karen Kerr decide that their family needs a fresh start and convince their mother Lynn that the big city holds promise for all of them. In order to succeed, Karen must take risks and decide just how much of a sacrifice she is willing to make. After a series of frustrating jobs, Lynn lands a position in the fashion industry, working for a hot designer. However, the job puts her in daily contact with her old college flame, now-married millionaire Julian Fiske--the one real love of her life. Julian still has feelings for Lynn, and she wrestles with her own emotions and morals as their relationship threatens to turn romantic. Helicopter rides, high-rises, and hedonistic parties--the Kerrs are definitely not in New Mexico anymore. But no matter what challenges the City throws their way, or what temptations may lead them astray, these three women are a family, and will always be there for one another, pursuing life in love in the greatest city on earth as they realize the true meaning of "beautiful people."

Johnny is forever trying to fight his feelings for Ava, knowing he ruined that relationship long ago. Johnny is the father figure to the children. Jay owns a surf shop and is trying to win back ex-girlfriend Erica Spaulding. He acts as the cool big brother to the 3 children and he and Bradin develop a close relationship. Bradin is growing up and getting led astray very easily in the teenage world. He drinks, takes drugs, and gets arrested after getting involved with 'bad-apple' Sara, who he then helps to get her life back on track. Later he falls in love with Callie, only to get hurt again. He discovers a passion for surfing and becomes very good--and falls for his coach, Erica Spaulding. Nikki is at an awkward age of 13 and trying to fit into the Californian teenage world. She is very bright and enjoys reading books and writing poetry more than hanging out at the mall and shopping for clothes. Early on Nikki meets Cameron Bale and they develop a strong relationship and ultimately fall in love. Derrick takes to Johnny immediately and the two develop a good friendship, he also finds his "one soul mate" in a little girl named Martha. This is basically a fun show of sun, sea, and sand mixed with great storyline and emotional input, and will leave you wanting more. Great cast, excellent chemistry, and beautiful scenery.

The series focuses on one group of teens, the Cliffhangers, who, with the aid of school counselors and each other, navigate adolescence as they learn to overcome their fears and face their inner demons. Providing them with not only a normal high school education, but also a rigorous schedule of outdoor activities and the tools they need in the aftermath of their abuse, the students work towards gaining confidence to face their personal struggles. While navigating perilous action sequences, friendships, and romantic entanglements, the students (and some teachers) find Mount Horizon's world much safer than their turbulent home lives have been.
