Along the way, Sydney fights various rival agents, rival terrorist groups, and traitors all the while keeping her cloak-and-dagger lifestyle a secret from her friends (season one).

Sebastian Stark is a Los Angeles hot-shot lawyer, who leaves his lucrative career as a defender of rich criminals to try public prosecution under the District Attorney. He forms a trial team of his own, consisting of young lawyers, like Casey Woodland, the son of a legislator, who get an opportunity to learn straight from the master, if they can stand his hellish pace, and walk the tightrope between respecting the law while using it and doing whatever it takes to win. A private investigator helps out, digging up factual information. In nearly every episode, a criminal is found out and put behind bars, after testing out tactics in Stark's private mock court. Sebastian often also has to deal with his daughter Julie, who surprisingly chose to live with him after his divorce, rather than with her mother in New York City.

Jack is a by-the-book detective whose habit of undermining himself has resulted in a dead-end position with the Police Dept. His partner Dan, a drunken, lecherous veteran hangs onto his job only because of one heroic act years ago.

San Francisco lawyer Eli Stone begins to see things, which leads him to discover a brain aneurysm. But his visions lead him to accept cases with little monetary gain but a lot of moral goodness.

Once he arrives in India he has a hard time adjusting to their customs and dealing with the assistant manager who also wants to be manager. He meets another American assigned there, Charlie and an Australian woman named Tonya who show Todd the ropes and try to help him adjust to Indian culture.

Having lost her medical license in the aftermath of a family tragedy, Megan Hunt M.D. joined the medical examiners and proved herself a forensic genius.
