Mary Horowitz writes crossword puzzles for the Sacramento Herald. She's loquacious to a fault. When kids at a Career Day make fun of her for being single, she accepts a blind date with Steve, the cameraman for a CNN-like news network. Within minutes she decides he's the man for her. Quickly put off by her constant verbiage and over-the-top advances, he makes an off-hand remark about going on the road with her, then splits. Moonstruck, she writes a sappy crossword puzzle, loses her job, and decides to follow him as the news team crisscrosses the Southwest; Steve's team eggs her on. Then she falls into a mine shaft, and she and Steve become a story. It a love story?

Donna believes in herself as a flight attendant, but has to overcome some obstacles, including flight attendant trainer John Witney, who has some hidden anger issues, and her friend Christine Montgomery who also wants to be a great flight attendant despite not having Donna's aptitude at it. In her path to the top of the profession, Donna also has to decide where Ted Stewart, the man with who she falls in love, fits in, he a law student based in the airline flight backwater of Cleveland.

Jody has arrived in Hollywood, fresh out of a New York film school with student awards in hand, and ready to get her film made. But as the neighbors try to keep up with the Joneses, none are prepared for the truth about this all- too perfect family.

Rosie (Michelle Pfeiffer), a 40-year-old divorced mother produces the has-been television comedy "You Go Girl," which seems doomed since her boss no longer allows the show to tackle any vaguely-controversial subjects. Then she meets Adam (Paul Rudd) , an attractive, spontaneously funny, single, 29-year-old actor at an audition. She successfully casts him, which revives the show's ratings. She also dates him, but her pathological insecurity, focused on their age difference, compromises the relationship. That culminates when she suspects him of infidelity with the show's star, and the studio gives those two their own sitcom.

Pippa Lee feels dislocated when she and her husband Herb move from Manhattan to a retirement community. He's older than she, they have two children who are young adults, and the daughter hardly speaks to Pippa. Pippa tells us about her life, in long flashbacks, starting with her birth to a mom who was a social dynamo and addicted to pills. As a teen, Pippa moves out and lives a hippie life until meeting Herb, who was then married to a young siren. Pippa discloses tragedies and discoveries. In the present, she's sleepwalking at night and talking from time to time with a burned-out case, the 35-year-old son of a neighbor. Can Pippa connect?

Emily Jackson lives a fast-paced life. Always on the go, able to talk around the clock, with a sensitive soul she loves playing matchmaker for her friends. It's Emily's gay roommate and frequent companion Peter, who becomes again the subject matchmaking skills when handsome new photographer assistant Paolo arrives at the Vogue offices, where Emily works. And so it does make sense that Peter, a screenwriter in the making, starts telling the story from his own point of view.

A story is made up about her being engaged to Nick, a guy whom she just met at a friend's wedding, and all seems to work out well for Kate.
