An elegant new action manga for fans of Sailor Moon and the litany of comics and animation that it inspired, Land of the Lustrous is set in a far future Earth, where humanity's distant descendants live on in a small group of sexless crystalline beings who must fight off an invasion from the Moon. Continuing to broaden my education, I read the next installment of Hellsing. With each number the story grows in complexity and the characters become *ahem* fleshed out. I particularly liked Hirano's solution for getting a vampire to be able to cross water. This particularly creative solution took me back to my childhood when the vehicle he uses (no spoilers here!) was first unveiled to the public.Lots of action, lots of splatter. As the plot thickens the reader wonders about the backstory of Alucard. Vampires, it seems, do dream after all. I compared this volume with a much different vampire story on my blog: Sects and Violence in the Ancient World. Vampires come in many forms, and both Hellsing and Dark Shadows show them in a sympathetic light.

In a letter to her friend, Nettie remembers her trip to the pre-Civil War South. She remembers the sweet cedar smell in the air and the sun pressing on her head. But she also remembers Tabitha, the slave at the hotel who has only that one name, and she remembers the heaps of rags the slaves use for beds. Most of all, though, she remembers the slave auction where people were bought and sold like sacks of flour. Nettie can't forget these images, and she can't help but wonder what life would be like if she were a slave... Based on the diary of the author's great-grandmother, this is a poignant and compelling look at slavery through the eyes of a young girl. Once read, it is not soon forgotten.
