The Returned opens in a small mountain community which is rocked to its core when several local people who are presumed dead suddenly re-appear at their homes. Despite having passed away some years earlier, these ghostly characters appear in human form, they have not aged, and they are completely unaware of their own fatality. Determined to reclaim their lives and start over, they slowly come to realize that they are not the only ones to have been brought back from the dead. Their return augers torment for their community when a gruesome murder attempt bears a chilling resemblance to the work of a serial killer from the past. This is a homecoming like no other.

Lucas Buck, local sheriff of Trinity, South Carolina, has supernatural powers and uses them to manipulate people into making evil choices. He himself has already committed murder and rape. Young Caleb Temple has seen his parents' suicides and his older sister's murder, but he doesn't know that Lucas is his biological father. Lucas plans to corrupt Caleb, but faces obstacles. Caleb's new legal guardian is his adult cousin, reporter Gail Emory, who is investigating her own parents' deaths. Lucas is helped by his sister Merlyn's ghost.

A strange ghost girl contacts both of them in an attempt to get them to warn the staff and prevent the upcoming great supernatural disaster. However, secretive malevolent forces are also there and they have no intention of letting anyone interfere with their infernal plans.

In the 1980s horror writer Garth Marenghi wrote, produced, directed and starred in Darkplace, a groundbreaking series set in a hospital and exploring the depths of the author's imagination. At least that's what Marenghi and his publicist/co-star, Dean Learner, claim in modern-day interviews which both bookend and interrupt the episodes. In fact the show is cheap, chiché'd, full of gaping plot holes and startlingly misogynist. Garth Marenghi is a creation of comedian Matthew Holness, who won a Perrier award with the character at the 2001 Edinburgh festival.
