Listen as the jester corrects the queen's Czech, proclaiming "Neumí Çe-e-e-sky": she can't speak Czech. Polívka uses traditional pantomime techniques as part of the jester's repertoire.

An old man is wandering round a badly signposted and as yet mostly under construction Prague housing estate looking for the high rise block into which he is supposed to be moving with his daughter's family. The old granddad from the countryside likes chatting, nothing escapes his eyes and he wants to give everyone a helping hand.

Doctor John, who works in a Prague maternity hospital while still living at home with his mother, is a self-assured philanderer who seduces a young nurse, Anna, and makes her pregnant. All the while he has two other girlfriends on the go, a flighty young hippy who lives with her boyfriend, and the slightly older wife of his doctor colleague who discovers their liaison and is not best pleased. Doctor John can't decide which of the women he prefers, and the ensuing anxiety causes him to mess up his medical research to the point where his professor boss sacks him. John then goes in search of Anna (who has resigned her job and left Prague) to persuade her that she's the one, and he tracks her down to a maternity home in the countryside. She turns him down.

In the garden of a pension, Eva and her husband Josef are enjoying a siesta. Here, they meet with the lonesome, mysterious-looking Robert. During play, a key falls out of Robert's pocket. The curious Eva picks it up and sets off on an expedition. In Robert's room, she finds a briefcase soiled with mud, which Robert had forgotten by her parsley patch before, and in it, a date-stamp. Soon afterwards, she learns that another victim of an unknown murderer of women has been found, with a number and date stamped on her forehead. Eva concludes that the murderer must be Robert.

Two stories are simultaneously told. One dutiful mother progressively becomes a frustrated woman who is the only one assuming the family responsibilities of working at home and looking after her only son, whereas her husband works all day, does not appreciate his wife's efforts and the only thing he does by the time he gets home is to read the newspaper and watch soccer matches. On the other hand, a female gymnast prepares for her last competition before her career retirement, but faces pressure from her trainer and a lack of motivation to keep going. The film depicts frustration on both sides, and parallels two worlds dominated by men, where women do not receive any recognition, and in case they do, it is momentary.
