Once Upon a Marigold
Jean Ferris
This is the cutest book in the entire world. You kind of just want to hug it and squeeze it and call it George, because it's just that damned cute. The subtitle is "part comedy, part love story, part everything-but-the-kitchen sink," and that's pretty accurate. I got a bit of a Princess Bride type of vibe from it. I just kept giggling throughout - totally mixed up fairy tale, just slightly surreal and a bit mocking. So much fun!(Okay, there were some parts where the author was clearly trying too hard to keep the tone and did a bit too much telling instead of showing- this was mostly evident with the three older sisters who came for the wedding. But by that time, I was so involved that it only registered as a minor annoyance, and the end was back to the original level of fun. I kind of wonder if an editor was responsible for those pages, because they stick out.)

The Dark Hills Divide
Patrick Carman
The Dark Hills Divide introduces readers to Alexa Daley, who annually visits the town of Bridewell. Alexa is curious about what lies beyond the massive ramparts that surround the city and the walled roads that link Bridewell to nearby towns; soon after town leader Thomas Warvold passes away, Alexa finds herself outside the walls, acquires a stone with remarkable powers, and discovers that she's meant to stop a potential war from occurring.[Author notes in a video blog at http://www.patrickcarman.com/wp-conte..., about the series reading order that the books in the original trilogy (The Dark Divide #1, Beyond The Valley of Thorns #2 and The Tenth City #3) should be read in that order and that Stargazer #4 read after the original trilogy. Otherwise is up to reader preference. Into The Mist, is a chronological prequel to the trilogy, but the story is told by characters on the boat where The Tenth City left off; it can be read before or after the original trilogy.]

The Young Unicorns
Madeleine L'Engle
My L'Engle reviews seem to have a theme: complaining noises followed by assertions why said complaints are meaningless in view of the whole, and a reference to love as the universal solvent. This book is no different. I'm unable to keep from rolling my eyes when Rob, age 7, pipes up with a malapropism followed with an erudite comment on the second movement of some obscure 12th century piece of music which he knows by heart. The plot here is so unrealistic it would be laughable in anyone else's hands. The scary laser? The tough, gun-toting 'hoods' with the third-grade name? The hysteria about what L'Engle insisted on calling "pot" and "acid" to further distance herself from them? The villains are one-dimensional. Wait for it... Yeah, not a bit of this matters. Honest. Just doesn't matter. The preachifying, the transparent manipulation? Just doesn't matter. Somehow, L'Engle transcends all of that, sucks you in, makes you believe, and holds your hand throughout. Her unvarying theme- love, love, love- makes the Austins real, makes Canon Tallis true, makes the Rabbi lovable, makes your heart pound at all the right places. It's a wonderful book. Put that in the pocket of your scorflam jacket and take it to the bank.

Troubling a Star
Madeleine L'Engle
I know many might find this a terrible thing to admit, but I've always loved A Ring of Endless Light and Troubling a Star best of all Madeleine L'Engle's books--yes, even more than A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels and companions. I'm not sure whether I can even explain why, other than to say that I somehow just really identify with Vicky Austin, more than I ever could with Meg or Cal or Charles Wallace or the twins. This book is sort of part mystery, part travel adventure, part political intrigue, and part coming-of-age story. Vicky gets in over her head when her friend (and crush) Adam Eddington heads to Antarctica with a research team and she's given the opportunity to join a cruise and follow along behind him, to meet up with him when she arrives. Only not everyone on the ship with her is there for sightseeing, and somebody thinks she knows more than she does. The story starts off right in thick of things and then goes back to tell us how Vicky got into such a dire situation. Yeah, sometimes Vicky seems a little old-fashioned, but...I don't know, she still somehow feels real, and Troubling a Star is a total comfort book for me that I just read over and over and over again. Plus, you know, I kind of have that whole obsession with Antarctica thing going. Anyway, this is one of my all-time faves.
