I finished this last night and have been pondering since about its meaning. On face value it is a story of a man who is corrupted by vanity and hedonism, the immortal allure of youth, driving him to insanity and ultimately to seek redemption through suicide. It is such a powerful tale because we have seen how these acts play out in our own lives--the eternal battle between desires and the sense of honour and decency--and how the former will lead to insanity if unchecked and unredeemed.But there is clearly something more to it. Up until the brutal murder of Hallward and callous extortion of Alan Campbell, it is not entirely clear what Dorian actually did. He was a philanderer yes, women fell in love with him and he abused that trust for his own sensual gains. But in the modern world of equal rights and equal footings in relationships, I am not sure how truly sinful that makes him. Are we allowed to enter into casual relationships? Or do we need to protect our opposite partners from emotional pain? If so, is that not these days seen as a patriarchal view? I do not know the answers, except that you should always be honest about your intentions and your own limitations. Something that Dorian did not do until the end.His other vices were that he supposedly got into fights and was seen in disreputable drinking dens, all of which led him to be rejected by civil society. But this is Victorian London, a city of depravity and destitution--you could cut the hypocrisy of it all with a knife! Anyone of note had a mistress or rent boy, Oscar Wilde included. I feel that his greatest sin was to be so unmoved by it all, his ability to wave away the pain he caused others and his lethargy to correct his mistakes when it was visibly destroying him inside.It is worth considering that if Dorian was a 25 year old lad living in East London today he would be shallow, indecent, perhaps shameful, but would he be considered a mortal sinner worth writing a book on? We all know famous characters and people in our lives like Gray, and society does not reject these people until things really go off the rails. Only then do people stop to question why they didn't spot the signs earlier. I also suspect that Oscar Wilde felt the same way, hence why he said "Dorian is what I would like to be—in other ages, perhaps".Therefore I feel that Wilde is also making a wider comment on society and how it responds to sinfulness. If you make society a rigid, dour, puritanical place where everything is sinful, then you produce far greater destructive forces within people and close off the path to redemption. Victorian society was in many ways the painting, a constant reminder of past indiscretions that could never be undone, slowly eating away at one's soul. No wonder so many people fled Great Britain to the colonies, to start life anew and begin their passage to salvation. This is a topic covered in Conrad's Lord Jim, another of my favourite novels.I have only thought about this for a few hours, I expect my views will change considerably. I will continue to ponder over this for years to come, which is truly the mark of a great book.

As Klaus has returned after many years, his ego has provoked him to become the king of the city. "Every King needs an heir" says Klaus, accepting the unborn child. The child is a first to be born to a hybrid (part vampire, part werewolf) and a werewolf (Hayley).
