as the book began I didn't care much for the characters, and I was in a hurry to get past the kidnapping, out of the house and (hopefully) into the Jungle, where it would becomes about survivalism. After awhile it became clear that nobody was going anywhere; our set was almost claustrophobically small. You don't really get a visual of what is happening beyond the wall - you are one of them, the kidnapped; you are all of them. The plot didn't feel realistic, which irked me a little, but the characters did. And once you realized where it was going, there couldn't be any other way for it to get there. A younger me would have liked this better. A younger me might not have had as much respect for the logistics of allowing 59 people to grow roots in a mansion. An older me knows better; the very unsustainability (irresponsability?) of the house's society in microcosm kept me from becoming fully invested in it. As much as I wanted to suspend disbelief as we are told the characters did, I could feel the inevitability of the return to "real life" bearing down on the book like a semi-truck...and the fact that the characters somehow lost track of the fact of The End ultimately throws into question their maturity.I still believe in "tribes", in families. I still believe in everyone being allowed to fall into their proper roles; in the growth of affection and respect through proximity. I wish I could've crossed the gap and invested properly in this tribe; but as stories go, this was a pleasant enough one just to watch from a distance.

Reading the third of Anne Truitt's journals is a delight. She touches on many topics of being an artist who is growing older and meeting her new limitations. Yet despite this these years are rich with her experiences of travel, creation, and taking on administration of Yaddo Artist Colony for one of their years. Sanjuro, a wandering samurai enters a rural town in nineteenth century Japan. After learning from the innkeeper that the town is divided between two gangsters, he plays one side off against the other. His efforts are complicated by the arrival of the wily Unosuke, the son of one of the gangsters, who owns a revolver. Unosuke has Sanjuro beaten after he reunites an abducted woman with her husband and son, then massacres his father's opponents. A priest, a woodcutter and another man are taking refuge from a rainstorm in the shell of a former gatehouse called Rashômon. The priest and the woodcutter are recounting the story of a murdered samurai whose body the woodcutter discovered three days earlier in a forest grove. Both were summoned to testify at the murder trial, the priest who ran into the samurai and his wife traveling through the forest just before the murder occurred. Three other people who testified at the trial are supposedly the only direct witnesses: a notorious bandit named Tajômaru, who allegedly murdered the samurai and raped his wife; the white veil cloaked wife of the samurai; and the samurai himself who testifies through the use of a medium. The three tell a similarly structured story - that Tajômaru kidnapped and bound the samurai so that he could rape the wife - but which ultimately contradict each other, the motivations and the actual killing being what differ. The woodcutter reveals at Rashômon that he knows more than he let on at the trial, thus bringing into question his own actions. But another discovery at Rashômon and the resulting actions from the discovery bring back into focus the woodcutter's own humanity or lack thereof.

After securing a major victory on the battlefield, Taketoti Washizu and one of his commanders, Yoshiaki Miki, find themselves lost in the maze-like Spider's Web forest. They come across a spirit-like seer who tells them of their future: both have been promoted because of their victory that day; Washizu will someday be the Great Lord of the Spider's Web castle while Miki's son will someday rule as Great Lord as well. When they arrive at the castle, they learn that the first part of the prophecy is correct. Washizu has no desire to become Great Lord but his ambitious wife urges him to reconsider. When the current Great Lord makes a surprise visit to his garrison outpost, Washizu is again promoted to commander of his vanguard but his wife reminds him of the danger that comes with the position. As pressure mounts, Wahizu takes action leading to its inevitable conclusion.

A veteran samurai, who has fallen on hard times, answers a village's request for protection from bandits. He gathers 6 other samurai to help him, and they teach the townspeople how to defend themselves, and they supply the samurai with three small meals a day. The film culminates in a giant battle when 40 bandits attack the village.
