The story is immediately engaging—two fourth-grade boys who write comic books and love to pull pranks find themselves in big trouble. You know, I almost don’t want to admit it, but I enjoyed Captain Underpants. Not to the point that I feel like I need to read another one, but certainly more than I expected. George and Harold are two bright yet… precocious young men who write their own comic books about a character they call Captain Underpants. Due to some accident that occurs in the first Captain Underpants book, their principal is occasionally hypnotized to believe he is Captain Underpants, during which time he sheds his clothes and his toupee and runs around the school in his tightie-whities with a curtain tied around his neck. The books have lots of drawings, including a few pages of George and Harold’s actual comic book, as well a “flip pages” where the action is entirely in pictures. However, I found the text to have some challenging vocabulary (when reading with my Reading Buddy, Bradley, we looked up “defiantly” and “gullible” in the dictionary, and I defined “toupee”), some important concepts (we talked about the difference between one dimensional, two dimensional, and three dimensional), and even irony. Yes, it’s primarily third-grade boy humor, like making the talking toilets throw up by stuffing them with creamed chipped beef from the school cafeteria, but it’s also quite fun.

Sneedly, saying that the book "contains many scientific errors and stuff." He stated that dinosaurs and cavemen did not live at the same time, as dinosaurs lived 64 million years before cavemen. He then stated that he should know about it, since he was a recipient of "The Most Brilliantest Science Guy of the Whole Wide World Award" in 2003, a reference to the seventh Captain Underpants book.

Yay the fourth book is done. I have seen the Captain Underpants movie (the first one that came out) and it had Professor Poopypants and the Terrible Toilets....I'm pretty sure, so I was familiar with the outcomes of the two stories, however I loved the extra bits that wasn't included in the movie. Like, when Professor Poopypants makes everyone change their names to be as silly as his or he would shrink them. Mine ended up being Pinky Gigglepants, that is actually cute and I think I will continue to call myself that from now on. Maybe tomorrow I'll tell my students at school to call me that too!If you don't mind silly potty humor and you love reading to your kids...these books are hilarious.
