What a lovely book. I put it on my to read list a long time ago because of a review I read somewhere but never seemed to find it in he bookstores in UK or US/Canada. Ordered it online finally I think 2nd hand. I usually read the heavier darker books but it is great to read a book which is warm, funny, set in the 1904s about two young brothers living at their fathers farm and growing up... with their 17 year old sister Tansy the freshly appointed school teacher when the old one, Miss Myrt Arbuckle, kicked the bucket. It leads to many funny scenes. It's a read for young people, but just as entertaining for the grownups. Oh and I loved J.W., the dog, J.W. is short for Just Worthless, I would make that J.A., Just Adorable. I think I will order another book by this author. Easy reading, funny, makes you feel good...

I have to occasionally go back and read this series. Blossom is probably one of my all-time favorite fictional heroines and many seem to actually remember these books. Peck captured a young girl in the early part of the 20th century, peculiarities and all, so well. She makes for a more enjoyable heroine than some others that have filtered down thru the years, extra "gifts" and all.As an adult, I have always wished that Peck would have picked these characters up again just to see what happened to them. Anyway, it is good for a quick read at any age and I highly suggest all four books in this series. They are truly YA gems.

An oldie from my childhood which I just finished re-reading this October -- great timing, because it begins on Halloween . . . .Excellent, and now I remember why I hung onto this so long. I was ghost crazy as a kid, and adored witches, and this book certainly filled the bill. Blossom Culp, social outcast and "a girl with powers" tells her early 20th-century story in the first person voice. Growing up in a small town like Blossom, I loved the echoes this had in my own life.I was very worried that the book wouldn't age well, but even as an adult, it's still a good (and amusing) read. The humor is still there, and even though Blossom is one of those "loner girls without a friend in the world" she never turns into a whiny heroine. The first person voice is amazing. And while the plot turns on something a little bit far-fetched, I've read much worse in books for adults.Still love it. Would recommend it for even adults. There is a paedophile villian, but it's not too creepy, and he gets his comeuppance. One thing I didn't realize as a kid was that this was part of a series . . . I may have to look for the others.

This is the third book of Peck's Bluff City books, starring the fabulous Blossom Culp. It's also the weakest of the four. Though there are some wonderfully humorous scenes, highlighting Peck's fine comic writing, the plot and character development mostly made me scratch my head. This book, and the major characters, really needed some development before this book was written. The book had several great possibilities, mostly unrealized. This book does, however, give Madame Culp more stage time and develops her character slightly more than the preceding books. Which was, you know, pretty darn awesome.

I enjoyed this heartwarming story about a lonely man that moves to a very small town for what he believes will be his last Christmas. I enjoyed the humor with which the author weaves this tale, the characters are rich and believable, and the relationship between the man and the Redbird (Jack) is touching and sweet. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the Fannie Flagg that I knew as a comedian was also an accomplished author. This is an easy Christmas tale that I would recommend to readers of all ages.

Over the years, Grandma Dowdel gets the kids involved in all sorts of hilarious adventures - catching criminals, helping some star-crossed lovers elope, and showing up the snooty banker's wife. Grandma is not above stretching the truth or stealing borrowing someone's boat to achieve her goals. The sheriff even calls her a "one-woman crime wave." She may indeed seem to be as tough as a boot - after the first summer, Grandma doesn't even meet the kids at the train station; she figures that they can find their own way to her house, but Joey, Mary Alice, and the reader soon come to realize that she's something of an old softy inside. And she's also one of the most delightful literary characters I've ever encountered.This book has already made the jump onto my favorites list; it's one of those feel-good stories I look forward to reading again and again.
