This poem first appeared in a newspaper in Troy, New York, USA, on December 23, 1823, as "A Visit From St. Nicholas". No one claimed authorship until 13 years later. Clement Clarke Moore, a professor and poet, said that he wrote the piece for his children. Unbeknownst to him, his housekeeper had sent it to the newspaper to be published. However, the family of Henry Livingston Jr. contended that their father had been reciting “A Visit from St. Nicholas” for 15 years prior to publication. Regardless of the true author, the poem is now a Christmas classic.

I've had a copy of Beverly Cleary's Ramona the Brave somewhere in my house, regardless of where I've lived or how old my kids are, for 4 decades now, but I never had the audiobook, narrated by Stockard Channing.I don't really “do” audiobooks (exceptions made by books narrated by Colin Firth or Ralph Fiennes), but I thought I'd shake up this classic and expose my girls to a different narrator.I was saving it for a rainy day, but instead of rain, we had stormy weather in our car last week, a day when our girls just couldn't stop pummeling each other (any person who thinks girls don't fist fight is clearly the parent of an only daughter), and I finally cracked the audio book out of its cover and let Stockard Channing's impressive vocal range save the day.Ms. Channing does a fantastic job of changing voices and every time she “speaks” as the pre-teen Beezus in this classic story, I found myself laughing out loud. She does a brilliant job at capturing teenage angst, and she made Ramona's new teacher, Miss Binney, come alive as well. You can just imagine that she wouldn't be your favorite teacher.This story just does NOT get old for me. Beverly Cleary, as usual, nails childhood: the negotiations that come along with sharing a room with a sibling, feeling invalidated and/or copied by peers, disliking a teacher for an entire school year, and being chased and almost eaten by a savage, neighborhood dog.We were no further than chapter one when my 10-year-old started giggling in the back seat and finally spit out, “Mom, these two girls fight just like we do!” Ah, it's all so relatable (Even for me. When their mother, Mrs. Quimby, sighs deeply in exasperation, I sighed right along with her). Does any author capture childhood better than Beverly Cleary?Ramona had had enough. She had been miserable the whole first grade, and she no longer cared what happened. She wanted to do something bad. She wanted to do something terrible that would shock her whole family, something that would make them sit up and take notice. “I'm going to say a bad word!” she shouted with a stamp of her foot. That silenced her family. Picky-picky stopped washing and left the room. Mr. Quimby looked surprised and—how could he be so disloyal?—a little amused. This made Ramona even angrier. Beezus looked interested and curious. After a moment Mrs. Quimby said quietly, “Go ahead, Ramona, and say the bad word if it will make you feel any better.”Ramona clenched her fists and took a deep breath. “Guts!” she yelled. “Guts! Guts! Guts!” There. That should show them.

A simple and straightforward little story with humor to read before bedtime. I love this story.We meet this boy who tells us there used to be an alligator under his bed. We then see his routine of putting up a board so he can walk up this ramp and get safely in bed. That alligator is sneaky and his parents can’t see it. He then empties the kitchen to make a trail of food to the garage for the alligator to follow. It works.Mercer Mayer is an amazing talent. The artwork pops with color and the story is exciting on a beginning level.The nephew thought this book was exciting. He just knew the alligator was going to eat his parents or something. He thought the boy was smart too. If all the food in our house ends up on the floor leading out the door, we’ll know he took this literally. He liked the story and he gave this 4 stars. He also read it to me. He’s becoming such a good reader. I’m so proud.

The 26 characters in this rhythmic, rhyming baby book are a lowercase alphabet with attitude. "A told b, and b told c, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree'"--which probably seemed like a good idea until the other 23 members of the gang decided to follow suit. The palm tree standing straight and tall on the first page begins to groan and bend under its alphabetical burden. First the coconuts fall off, then ("Chicka chicka... BOOM! BOOM!") all the letters also end up in a big heap underneath.

When almost the entire crew of Fire House 126 in Austin, Texas, is wiped out in a fertilizer storage explosion during a fire, Owen Strand of the NYFD is offered the command of the station to rebuild it with an eye for a more diverse crew than the state is typically known to encourage. Despite his early-stage cancer condition and his son's own serious troubles, Strand decides to accept the post. George Jefferson was the Black version of Archie Bunker in many respects: both were loud-mouthed, opinionated, and set in their bigoted ways. By 1975, Jefferson's fledgling dry-cleaning business, Jefferson Cleaners, had successfully grown into a small chain; his newfound wealth led to moving his family to a "deluxe apartment in the sky" in Manhattan. His family included his wife Louise, a level-headed and open-minded woman who often had to scold George when his mouth got him into trouble; and their son Lionel, an engineering major at a local college. George especially disliked Tom and Helen Willis, an interracial couple (he was white, she was Black) whose daughter Jenny was dating and later married Lionel; Florence, his sharp-tongued maid; and Harry Bentley, the esoteric Englishman who lived next door. George often flaunted his wealth and displayed rude, arrogant, bigoted behavior; however, he often found that money didn't open every door or win him favor with everyone. In later years, George and Louise became grandparents when Lionel and Jenny welcomed their adorable little daughter Jessica; and Lionel and Jenny found work, he as an electrical engineer, she as a fashion designer; but Lionel and Jenny's marriage crumbled. Meanwhile, as Jefferson Cleaners continued to expand, George continually had to deal with competing dry-cleaning franchises who sought to put him out of business. In the final season, George and Tom formed a partnership and purchased Charlie's Bar, their favorite hangout.
