Gordie, a kid who is emotionally neglected by his family, acutely feels the sincerity and kindness that Chris brings into the world, despite his 'tough' origins - Chris, the center of this ragtag group, is grown up beyond his years, and has some hard-earned wisdom for his twelve years of age, sprinkled with a bit of pain and bitterness but grounded in common sense."But it was only survival. We were clinging to each other in deep water. I've explained about Chris, I think; my reasons for clinging to him were less definable. His desire to get away from Castle Rock and out of the mill's shadow seemed to me to be my best part, and I could not just leave him to sink or swim on his own. If he had drowned, that part of me would have drowned with him, I think."**********I love the narrative voice of this story - the narration by a young but accomplished writer Gordon Lachance, bringing the perspective that the few decades that have passed since that summer of 1960 have given him - but yet conveying the feelings and the attitudes of a twelve-year-old boy who feels both resentment and love and experiences profound beauty and the low of human ugliness. There are lyrical parts and trademark-King unflinching gory parts, and social commentary without the slightest sugar-coating. The story is peppered in places with the stories written by older Gordon and full of reflections of the adult man reflecting on the important and defining experience of the end of his childhood. "The most important things are hardest to say, because words diminish them." It is a fascinating, engrossing read, the one that is well worth several hours of your time, even if you have never been a fan of King. 5 stars and highly recommend!

Scottish-born American naturalist and author (1838-1914)

My daughter came home for a college break with this novel, which she was given for free on campus. She passed it on to me, saying it was a “gorgeous read,” and that she had hoped to write a review but didn't have the time. Which is where Mom comes in …Just finished it, and, well -- like daughter like mother! What an entrancing book. It’s the kind that seems simple, like it’s written for children, but its simplicity is a deception; beneath the storybook facade is something deeper, wiser … the stuff of good literary fiction. It’s a quick read, too. I finished it in just two sittings. I’m wary of trying new authors, especially ones that haven’t been very well-reviewed, but regardless of some of the vitriol I’ve read online (honestly, where does that come from?), I would highly recommend this book.I hope I’m not giving anything away when I say that there’s an unexpected twist to the plot, which is otherwise a fairly simple one. It’s about two best friends who are six, a boy and a girl, who essentially fall in love, as only six-year-olds can. (Very nostalgic for me; my best childhood friend, who was of the opposite sex, and I were inseparable and considered ourselves “married”). The kids’ parents are either constantly fighting or taking drugs and behaving erratically, and the kids are often left to their own devices, Lord of the Flies-style. They create a fantasy world in the forest behind their homes, and that world is much richer than the lives of their parents. So much richer, in fact, that they’re tempted to leave the world of suffering that their parents represent and join their dream god and goddess in theirs, which promises an endless summer where they would be together, in love, forever. But that world comes at a cost. I’ll say no more …There’s a lot to admire here. The kids, though some will say they’re overly precocious for six-year-olds, are nicely fleshed out, and your heart will most definitely go out to them. Their fantasy world, born of their dreams – which are born, in turn, of their struggles at home – includes clever characters who often talk in verse. Some are imaginative idealizations of their parents -- who the kids really want their parents to be. Their perambulations through the forest (it’s set on the outskirts of Fairbanks, AK) are often spell-binding, for the kids and the reader. It’s heart-rending when they have to head back home again.There are also some problems: The natural descriptions are often beautiful, but Shapero sometimes doesn’t know when to stop. And sometimes the words he chooses to evoke the natural landscape are such big ones that they produce the opposite effect. My favorite English professor at Yale once told me that when writing anything, there’s no point using a $10 word when a 10-cent one will do (many years have elapsed since then, so you’ll need to adjust for inflation). This is especially true for Too Far, where the forest is seen and experienced through the eyes of six-year-old children. Words like “sphagnum,” “fritillaries,” and “cinquefoil” have no place in a book like this (except to show off the author’s knowledge of the local flora), and I wish the author had more consistently adopted the kids’ point of view in the telling of the story.Overall though, I was very moved by this book, taken with its ideas, and surprised by its ending. When I looked at the author's website, I noticed that he is a fan of William Blake. Funny, because as I was reading Too Far, this well-known Blake quote came to mind:"If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern." Six-year-old kids, though they aren’t always well-scrubbed, have the cleanest doors of perception around, which is why Shapero’s protagonists are able to grasp, if only for a moment, the Infinite. I look forward to reading more by Rich Shapero. As I write, he has just one other book out, Wild Animus. I’ve put it on my list …

On the day that Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, elderly Daisy Williams (nee Fuller) is on her deathbed in a New Orleans hospital. At her side is her adult daughter, Caroline. Daisy asks Caroline to read to her aloud the diary of Daisy's lifelong friend, Benjamin Button. Benjamin's diary recounts his entire extraordinary life, the primary unusual aspect of which was his aging backwards, being diagnosed with several aging diseases at birth and thus given little chance of survival, but who does survive and gets younger with time. Abandoned by his biological father, Thomas Button, after Benjamin's biological mother died in childbirth, Benjamin was raised by Queenie, a black woman and caregiver at a seniors home. Daisy's grandmother was a resident at that home, which is where she first met Benjamin. Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact throughout their lives, reconnecting in their forties when in age they finally match up. Some of the revelations in Benjamin's diary are difficult for Caroline to read, especially as it relates to the time past this reconnection between Benjamin and Daisy, when Daisy gets older and Benjamin grows younger into his childhood years.

Helen Lyle is a student who decides to write a thesis about local legends and myths. She visits a part of the town, where she learns about the legend of the Candyman, a one-armed man who appears when you say his name five times, in front of a mirror. Of course, Helen doesn't believe all this stuff, but the people of the area are really afraid. When she ignores their warnings and begins her investigation in the places that he is rumored to appear, a series of horrible murders begins. Could the legend be true?

McMurphy has a criminal past and has once again gotten himself into trouble and is sentenced by the court. To escape labor duties in prison, McMurphy pleads insanity and is sent to a ward for the mentally unstable. Once here, McMurphy both endures and stands witness to the abuse and degradation of the oppressive Nurse Ratched, who gains superiority and power through the flaws of the other inmates. I was five and a half years old when my mother gave me The Adventures of Tom Sawyer as a New Year's gift (she is a literature teacher, and I have been reading novels since the tender age of four or so, and so it seemed appropriate).Being a diligent and serious¹ child (neither of those qualities have stuck with me, unfortunately), I opened it to page 1 and started reading. I even took it with me to kindergarten, where other kids were learning letters and I was mercifully allowed to read hefty tomes, having obviously achieved full literacy by that point.¹ \
Me (age 5) and Mom. The diligent seriousness is *all over* this picture. This book initially left me quite confused, but I was undeterred - after all, the world was a confusing place, full of adults and rules and great books - even those without pictures. (And I was very proud to own books without pictures, after all). But his one was just too strange - its beginning did not quite fit with the rest of the quite fun story - it was odd and dry and incomprehensible for the first 40 pages or so, and it even was about some other guy (Samuel Clemens?) who was not Tom Sawyer.A few years later I reread my early childhood favorite (I probably reached a ripe old age of eight or so, still diligent but a bit less serious already). It was then that I figured out what seemed strange about the beginning of this book when I was five.You see, I diligently slogged my way through the most boring academic foreword, assuming that was the first chapter. What amazes me that I managed to stay awake through it. Good job, five-year-old me! Excellent preparation for that painfully boring biochemistry course a couple of decades later!After that foreword, slogging through any classic was a comparative breeze. Yes, I'm looking at you, War and Peace! You know what you did, you endless tome.Also, as it turns out, when you include two characters named Joe in one book (Injun Joe and Tom's classmate Joe Harper) that can cause a certain amount of confusion to a five-year-old who assumes they have to be the same person and struggles really hard to reconcile their seemingly conflicting characters. And, as a side note, I have always been disappointed at Tom Sawyer tricking his friends to do the infamous fence whitewashing. A *real* kid knows after all that painting stuff is fun. Five-year-old me was a bit disapproving of the silliness. I have told bits and pieces of this book to my friends on the playground, while dangling from the monkey bars or building sandcastles (in a sandbox, that in retrospect I suspect was used by the neighborhood stray cats as a litterbox - but I guess you have to develop immunity to germs somehow). We may have planned an escape to an island in a true Tom Sawyer fashion, but the idea fizzled. After all, we did not have an island nearby, which was a problem. Also, we may have got distracted by the afternoon cartoons.Someday, I just may have to leave this book within a reach of my future hypothetical daughter - as long as I make sure it does not come with a long-winded boring introduction.
