After reading a succession of more serious books, I felt the need to read something light and trashy. As I discovered from reading this book, you should be careful what you wish for. Light? Yes. Trashy? Oh yes. Oh yes, yes, yes. But not in a good way - just trash, trash, trash.It is hard to say what I disliked more about this book - the sophomoric writing, or the annoying, vapid, 2-d, Harlequin-romance-heroine-helpless-twit persona of Sookie Stackhouse. Sookie is a psychic, and this fact is used to explain everything from why she didn't do well at school and became a cocktail waitress to why she spends all of her free time sunbathing to why she can't see an obviously dangerous situation until she's up to her eyeballs in it. It does not, however, explain why she has such bad dress-sense (denim mini jumper dress with yellow bandana hair clip to impress the vampire who comes to dinner; Tweety Bird night gown that drives him wild with desire), or why her sexual naivete comes and goes like a rash - at times she is very confident about her sexual attractiveness (wearing "fuck me" red high heels etc) and other times wondering what Bill the vampire and all of the other men in Louisiana could possibly see in "l'il ole me".The sex scenes are either squirmingly bad or tedious. After reading two I just had to skip ahead a few pages any time sex with Sookie looked like it was going to rear its ugly and badly-written head.I know a lot of folks have enjoyed this series, and have devoured every book written by Charlaine Harris. From reading other reviews, it seems to be a very polarizing book. As for me, I could barely choke this one down and will look to satisfy my literary appetites elsewhere.3/28/10 - After having viewed the first two episodes of the HBO series "True Blood", I can now understand why people have gone bananas over this series of books. The show (what I've seen so far) is exceptionally good, thanks to a great cast and the writing talents of Alan Ball, who has turned a sow's ear into a silk purse. I can see how a reader might enjoy the books if they had viewed at least some of the series first and kept it in mind while reading Charlaine Harris's less than stellar prose. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for me - and while I won't be reading any more of these books, I will continue to enjoy the show!

This reads like an '80s action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.A big tough ex-military guy drifts into a small town and is sucked into uncovering a vast criminal conspiracy through completely unbelievable coincidences. - Check.Hero has a cool, manly sounding name: Jack Reacher. - CheckHero is quickly given a personal grudge against the villains. - CheckBad dialogue. - Check.Stereotypical villains including corrupt businessmen and politicians. - Check.Hero finds a few trustworthy allies, but is betrayed at some point. -CheckHero shacks up with hottest girl in town within two days of meeting her. - CheckHot girl gets kidnapped by bad guys at some point. - Check.Stuff blows up real good at the end. - Check.I know this is a really popular series these days, but unless it gets a lot better in later books, I just don't get it. I've read far better action scenes from guys like John Sandford who actually write thrillers that have plots that hang together and don't trot out every action movie cliche in the process. Plus, there are massive gaps in logic. A murder victim turns out to be a federal agent who is working on a super-secret case that is so important that it literally threatens the United States. Yet, after he's killed and it's reported, nobody else from the government even shows up to check it out. WTF? I can gloss over unrealistic procedural stuff in the interest of a good story, but since this isn't a good story, the plot loopholes are too horrible to ignore.Another problem is that Child couldn't make up his mind if he wanted to write just an action novel or a detective story, and he tried to split the difference. Not good. Reacher is the worst fictional detective I've ever read. Giant clues are put in front of him that anyone who has ever read a book or seen an episode of television since 1962 would instantly recognize, but he misses them. Yet, when called for, he can make ludicrous leaps of intuition that would make Sherlock Holmes scratch his head at the sheer implausibility of them. This might have been a better book if Reacher was just a revenge driven killing machine mowing through the bad guys without the pretense of playing detective.This would have been 1 star, but I gave it an extra star because the main piece of the criminal plot is actually kind of clever and not something I'd read before. I love these books. It’s great to see the progression of Harry’s skill with magic and his personality changes as the books go on.

This was my first time with this author and series as I kept seeing it flitting through my GR feed from different friends that had read the series. What a diamond in the rough I have found with this author and these books as I am happy that I picked them up to read. :)Since I read the omnibus of books one through six, I am breaking it up into book sections on the review:Book One: Storm FrontHarry Dresden, wizard a/k/a private investigator just grabs a hold of you the moment you start reading the first book. There is quite a bit of funny situations that he gets himself into along with some interesting magical characters that I loved. There is quite a bit of mystery, suspense, magic, and action all mixed up together which drew me in right away. He also has a sense of humor which made me chuckle here and there throughout the book. The writing style of the author just flows along and the pace is well kept throughout the whole book. I loved it and the story just swept me away into the magical world of Harry! Five stars for the first book!Book Two: Foul MoonHarry is back! The first part of the book was a little slow, but I persevered as I knew that it would surely get better and it did, but took a bit to really get going strong. Quite a few creatures of different varieties abound in this book, but no spoilers here as you will just have to read the book to find out what kind of creatures make an appearance. More magic, mystery, and action throughout the book. Harry still kept me chuckling throughout the book and I have become more attached to this series. Five stars for the second book.Book Three: Grave PerilThe third book took off and grabbed me to the point of slamming me back in Harry's world! Different type of problems this time arise for Harry as he has to deal with ghosts and vampires, but I still loved how he is able to deal with them all as how hard is it when you are a wizard? Love the way the author just brings it all together and keeps the reader entertained throughout the book. I still love this world of magic and mystery to the point that this book is going to be five stars for keeping me entertained! Book Four: Summer KnightThe fourth book has quite a bit more contained within its pages as there are factions that abound in this book. The Red Court of Vampires, The White Council (wizards) along with some new faces and old faces come together in this book. There is quite a bit more action throughout the book and Harry just seems to be caught in the middle of it all. Poor guy! What is a wizard to do? Well he can do his damndest to get himself out of the mess that surrounds him! Still loving the magic mixed with mayhem and still loving the humor that comes and goes throughout the book. Harry just seems to be a lovable character and the more I delve into this series, the more I love these books! Five stars for this one.Book Five: Death MasksThe fifth book has little bit more characters and the factions are heating up where it seems Harry has a bullseye on his back through most of the book. Poor Harry cannot catch a break and there is no rest for him in this book. There is not much wit within this book though like the previous books as there is too much action so there is no time to be funny. I still love these books though with all the quirky characters, all the magic, all the mayhem, and the story just flows along. Loving this urban fantasy series and giving this book five stars.Book Six: Blood RitesThe sixth book gives more background on Harry along with a few more new characters. Still quite a bit of action and some interesting things going on within these pages, but no spoilers from me as you will just have to read the book. Harry gets himself involved with needing to protect a movie producer and let the craziness begin! The magic and mystery is still there along with Harry trying to get himself out of the messes he so conveniently gets himself into. I am still loving this series and I am giving this book five stars for still keeping me entertained!
