Read the Longman Simplified English version.This book is important because it's a window into the lifestyles of people living in the 18th century. I have to admit the dullness of the interactions mixed with the third person omniscient style (which lacks emotions) did not give me a good first impression of the novel. Yet, due to curiosity as to why this is a classic I decided to keep going. As far as petty drama goes I was pleasantly surprised upon reaching 3/4 of the book. (view spoiler)[When the youngest sister Lydia ran off with the sleazy Mr. Wickham the plot took an interesting turn which significantly changed my opinion. The title of the book is also very fitting. Pride = Mr. Darcy Prejudice = Elizabeth The story about two unlikely people that fall for each other while overcoming their flaws.  (hide spoiler)]

He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.

A Tale of Two Cities is Charles Dickens’s great historical novel, set against the violent upheaval of the French Revolution. The most famous and perhaps the most popular of his works, it compresses an event of immense complexity to the scale of a family history, with a cast of characters that includes a bloodthirsty ogress and an antihero as believably flawed as any in modern fiction. Though the least typical of the author’s novels, A Tale of Two Cities still underscores many of his enduring themes—imprisonment, injustice, social anarchy, resurrection, and the renunciation that fosters renewal.

الإخوة كرامازوف 19 يوماً قضيتها مع الإخوة كرامازوف، كتاب ضخم ومن الغريب أنه مع ضخامته ليس إلا الجزء الأول فقط، وكان هناك جزء تالٍ سيكتبه دوستويفسكي وغالباً كان سيركزه على ديمتري كرامازوف ولكنه توفي بعد إنجازه لهذا الجزء بأربعة أشهر، فلذلك بقيت رواية (الإخوة كرامازوف) كما نعرفها الآن. أي طاقة !! أي جلد على الكتابة يمتلكه هذا الروسي العملاق؟ ما هي الكتابة بالنسبة لدوستويفسكي؟ هل هي دفء الليالي الروسية الباردة؟ أم هي المهرب من قسوة الحياة وإحباطاتها؟ أم هي الرغبة في التساؤل والتفلسف من خلال الرواية، وهي أفضل طريقة للفلسفة كما قال كامو، أياً كان الدافع – وقراءة مكثفة لحياة الرجل وبقية مؤلفاته من ضمن خطط قراءاتي للعام القادم بإذن الله، وأتمنى أن تجيب عن الكثير من التساؤلات حوله-، أياً كان دافع دوستويفسكي، لقد ترك لنا مجلدات ضخمة، آلاف الصفحات، وكم يرعبني هذا، الصعوبة التي نجدها في كتابة صفحات قليلة في أيامنا هذه، مع تسلط وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي التي جعلت الكتابة مركزة، مختصرة، معنية بالتخلص من الحروف الزائدة، وتشذيب العبارات، لقد كتب دوستويفسكي هذه الـ 1600 صفحة في عامين، مع مشاريع كتابية أخرى، وهذه طاقة هائلة، عزيمة حقيقية، لا يعرفها إلا من جربوا الكتابة اليومية. موقع الإخوة كرامازوف متقدم بين مؤلفات دوستويفسكي مع أنها آخر ما كتب، ويعتبرها الكثيرون أفضل ما كتبه دوستويفسكي، وهي للحقيقة رغم طولها المفرط، عمل كبير، يضم بين دفتيه كل شيء تقريباً، من العلاقة الأبوية البنوية، إلى الحب، الجريمة، الإيمان والإلحاد، ألاعيب النساء، وتكتيكات المحامين والمحققين. لقد كان لدي وهم سابق، لا أدري من سربه إلي - ربما كان غازي القصيبي في العصفورية - يعزو طول المؤلفات الروسية إلى إفراط الكتاب الروس في الوصف ولكن دوستويفسكي خارج هذا، أوصافه قليلة، إنه مشغول عن الخارج بالداخل، مشغول بالإنسان، وهو يستخدم الحوار المطول والمفصل ليغوص بنا إلى أعماقه، ما يفكر به، ما يقلقه، فلذا تظهر كل شخصياته بشكل ملحمي، تكاد كل شخصية أن تسيطر عليك وأن تجعلك تهتم بها وبما يدور فيها وحولها، وربما هذا ما جعل القراء يعشقون دوستويفسكي، قدرته على جعلك تقترب من كل شخصية، حتى التي نرى أنها هامشية، بحيث تغدو رواياته بلا شخصيات هامشية. هذا هو العمق الذي ربما أعزو إليه الاهتمام بدوستويفسكي، هذا خلاف ما يثيره من أسئلة الإيمان والإلحاد، الفضيلة والرذيلة، فلذا القراء الذين لا تستثيرهم الأسئلة، أو ينفرون من بعض الخطابية، سيصعب عليهم تقبل دوستويفسكي أو الاهتمام بما يكتب. في النهاية قراءة دوستويفسكي وتقدير أعماله أمر شبه واجب لأي مهتم بالأدب، لا يشترط أن يكون كاتبك المفضل، ولكن لا يمكنك أيضاً إغفال جمال أعماله، وقوة مواضيعه وتأثيريته الطاغية. نأتي الآن إلى الإخوة كرامازوف ديمتري وإيفان وأليوشا ووالدهم فيدور، إن أردنا ترميز كلاً منهم فسنقول أن ديمتري هو الجسد، هو العاطفة الجامحة، بينما إيفان هو العقل الحائر، أما أليوشا فهو الإيمان، هو الروح، ولكن ماذا يمثل الأب؟ ماذا يمثل فيدور؟ هل هو روسيا أو الشعب الروسي الذي يتنازعه هؤلاء الثلاثة؟ ربما. إن قبلنا بهذا الترميز، فستبدو لنا الرواية قصة الصراع بين الجسد والعقل والروح التي تنتهي بهزيمة الجسد وسقوطه، وجنون العقل، وحدها الروح تبقى في النهاية، وحدها التي أحبت الأب وأشفقت على الأخوين الضائعين. تثير الشخصيات في الرواية كل ضروب العواطف والأفكار لدى القارئ، فمن الأب المهرج الذي يثير الغيظ بتهالكه على الشهوات وإهماله لأبنائه، إلى دمتري المتلاف والعنيف، إلى إيفان الذكي والحائر، إلى إليوشا المؤمن والطيب، إلى جروشنكا المتقلبة اللعوب، وكاترينا إيفانوفنا خطيبة دمتري التي ربطتها به علاقة غريبة، ولد فيها الحب من رحم الاحتقار، بطريقة تذكرنا بعلاقة سفيدريجيالوف ودونيا في الجريمة والعقاب، بل حتى الشخصيات التي سنظن أنها هامشية يمنحها دوستويفسكي بإصرار أبعاداً ملهمة، فمن إيليوشا الطفل المسكين، إلى والده النقيب المهان، بل عائلتهم البائسة كلها، وكوليا، وسمردياكوف، والسيدة خوخلاكوفا، لكل هذه الشخصيات أهميتها وملامحها المميزة، التي يبرزها دوستويفسكي بصبر وبسخرية أحياناً. وبما أن الحديث عن مجمل الرواية قد يحرقها على القارئ، فلذا سأتحدث عن أهم ما جذبني إليها من دون تفصيل، عمق الشخصيات وثرائها، الحوارات الفلسفية رغم طولها وتجذرها وخاصة في فصول التمرد والمفتش الكبير والمحاكمة، علاقات الحب المجنونة والجامحة، قصة الطفل إيليوشا وتأثره بما حدث لأبيه، الفصول التي تخص كوليا، كل هذه الصفحات يجب أن تقرأها بتأنٍ، بتعاطف واهتمام، عندها ستكون رحلتك مع دوستويفسكي ممتعة وثمينة.

I recently went to Las Vegas for the first, and probably only, time in my life. I hadn't read this book in years, and previously, it hadn't even been my favorite Hunter S. Thompson work. Thompson is dearly missed by many people, and on a personal level, I miss him deeply. He spoke to a true astonishment at the complete, unrelenting fuckedupedness of America and her politics, and he did it with a bite that was deserved and unmatched. He probably could have been a very rich super-novelist of popular, uninspired filth. He probably could have been a brilliant novelist of any kind. But he chose to do what he did, and he did it better than any of his generation. Like Mark Twain, he chronicled American stupidity in the tongue of his generation, and he captured it perfectly, from the insanity of the drug experience to the depravity of American politics. For years, no work of his stood out to me as much as Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 or the Gonzo letters. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, to me, wasn't his best work. Then I went to Vegas. Suddenly, all the subtle differences between this and his other work made sense, and I realized that he had captured the true tackiness of the truest tacky city on the entire planet (though Dubai with their fucking Island fantasies are likely to take over soon). Fear &amp; Loathing in Las Vegas IS Las Vegas. It's a nightmare, a joke, a blunder of comical, cosmically-fucked proportions. It's not Sin City. It's where Sin goes to die when it's embarrassed for itself. It's where families go on vacations with ten-year-olds, children who get handed fliers for prostitutes. It's the living, pulsing, filthing embodiment of the Holy Dollar. It's sensory overload on a scale drugs can't equal, a place where you almost have to take a brimful of Valium and a pint of ether to feel normal and not feel utterly ashamed at the state of the human condition. It would make you want to blow your brains out if it weren't so goddamned fun, even if you're gay, you hate gambling and hookers make your brain itch. Yet you never, ever feel like it is evil or subversive or curious in any way. It's just about a buck, and every other blink reminds you of it. This is a place where Hunter S. Thompson could easily mingle with a law enforcement convention and not get noticed. This is a place where a lawyer could leave you with a hotel bill. This is a place where no questions get asked because no answers would make sense, and the only thing profound about any of it is that you know, on a gut level, that all the oil used to produce all the plastic used to build that city no doubt funded an island shaped like Australia that was built off the coast of the UAE over the weekend. This novel will never cease to be important, and one day, as a cultural artifact of a forgotten culture from a forgotten nation, it will be one of the most important anthropological pieces in existence. I wish he'd survived the Bush administration. We need this man.NC

He is a husband to real estate agent Carolyn Burnham and father to high school student Jane Burnham. Although Lester and Carolyn once loved each other, they now merely tolerate each other. In the growing and learning part of life, Catholic schoolboys attend a rather strange church service and ditto sex education lesson. Onto war, where an officer's plan to attack is thwarted by his underlings wanting to celebrate his birthday, and an officer's leg is bitten off by presumably an African tiger. At middle age, a couple orders "philosophy" at a restaurant, after which, the movie continues with live organ transplants. The autumn years are played in a restaurant, which, after being treated to the song "Isn't It Awfully Nice to Have a Penis?" by an entertainer, sees the arrival of an extremely fat man. He can eat a lot, but also throw up quite copiously. The Grim Reaper brings for the final stage of human life, death, a visit to a mansion, where the people are rather interested in him. But life doesn't stop at death. It's onto heaven, where it's always Christmas.
