It took me 21 months to read this third volume. When Maupin comes up with a totally unbelievable plot line involving a resurrected Jim Jones, his kidnapping of two four-year-old children from an Alaskan cruise and then perhaps through Little Diomedes (a US island) to Big Diomedes (a Russian island) and then on to Nome which is "over eleven hundred miles from here [Diomedes]" Mary Ann says, right off the top of her head, the last half of this volume turns into a ridiculously thriller. And not even a drug-induced one via Mrs. Mardigal's magical backyard plants! Finally, Maupin returns to form by having Jon (Micheal's ex-doctor/lover) show up at 28 Barbary Lane while Father Paddy and Officer Rivera enjoy an afternoon delight behind park shrubbery. I'll read the rest of this series but I hope Maupin sticks to what he does best: love, sex, and lovesexdrugsdisco in San Francisco of the 1980s.

My mother was 3 years old when this book came out in 1946. Her copy was on my shelf as a child and after reading 20 or so Famous Five books I reluctantly picked it up, trusting Blyton to make even a girls' school interesting. I have vague memories of thinking it was OK.I got my daughter Celyn the books on CD and she adores them. She has listened to them dozens of times.The basic formula is posh girls being mean to each other at boarding school.This book combined with The Worst Witch will give you the foundation of Harry Potter.The girls take a train to Malory Towers at the start of term, making friends and enemies on the way. They're sorted into four houses then sent to sleep in one of four towers.High jinx include pranking French teachers (with unconvincing accents), spiders in desks, duckings/semi-drownings, malicious damage to property and all the other things that provide suitable fresh blood for the British upper classes.There's also a line in practical jokes on the teachers, involving implausible joke-shop purchases and Blyton's enduring failure to understand the limitations of magnets.Much of it seems rather heartless, but then I guess that's a fair representation of many interactions between school children.I can't deny that elements of my book Red Sister draw on the Malory Towers vibe. So this one yet again revolves around "bad men" after Uncle Quentin's marvelous inventions. We see again the repeated theme of a dirty gypsy child (or sometimes just a child of the serving classes) in need of betterment being befriended and ultimately parted from their criminal lone parent/guardian. This one happens to look exactly like George ... clearly this will come in useful later.First papers are stolen, then Timmy is drugged and George is kidnapped in circumstances that mean the others don't notice for ages. Then there is a ransom note demanding Uncle Quentin's science writings. The phone line is cut but using a cunning ruse they manage to get Dick out of the house without detection ... but rather than tell the nearby police he dives right back in again on his own.There's some malarky with gypsy caravans (smelly &amp; dirty, though I have always heard that the Roma keep their caravans fastidiously clean) and it turns out that George and Timmy are being held by a mad American scientist who wants her uncle's secrets. The mad scientist has his lair above a cave system of course. Every Famous Five book needs caves. And he plans to escape in a helicopter, which would be pretty far fetched in 2018 and in 1949 when this book was written was arrant nonsense. My guess is that Enid had heard of them as exciting new things just beginning to find service in the military.Once again someone is going to shoot Timmy, but with the help of the gypsy urchin, Jo, who appears in a later book via her connections with circus folk, everything ends happily.Jo is rewarded by being fostered with a friend of the family cook, and all is well.This wasn't a stellar entry in the series. It seems to hit most of EB's repeating themes and to be rather a lazy tale.This one scores on the perennial themes of gypsies, Uncle Q's science, Timmy being poisoned, Timmy threatened with shooting, men with guns, kidnapping, caves, bad Americans, twins (well look alikes), a spare child, and the betterment of a poor child.The title is lazy too. The story begins on a hot sunny day when the children see a circus go by. This gives George an idea for a camping holiday. The others are excited about this and Julian asks his mother to hire a caravan. After a few days they leave for Merran Lake where they befriend Nobby, a boy who works for a circus. I'm going to tear this book a new orifice. My tongue will be in my cheek - this book just seems to be a particularly fine example of Blyton's worst habits. Bear with me. Apologies to Enid Blyton but I've read 30+ of her books and she's been dead 47 years, so I doubt it will worry her.I've read a lot of Enid Blyton, most of it when I was 10. Recently I've been reading the books to my daughter, Celyn. This is one of the ones we have on audiobook. It's set in Wales and not helped by the fact that none of the voice actors even come close to the Welsh accents they're attempting. Many sound Pakistani. To be fair this book was probably written in a couple of weeks. Enid Blyton is the author of 762 books!Also note that the stories are a product of their time, racist and sexist in equal measure. Dick famously says to Georgina "it's really time you gave up thinking you're as good as a boy" and that does seem to sum up the ethos of the books.Our intrepid children are at Julian's parents' house over Christmas and develop nasty coughs ... so of course the parents send them off to a remote Welsh farmhouse ... where they ... go skiing. Because when your children (who seem to range in age from perhaps 10 to 13 years of age) are sick at Christmas you naturally send them off into the wilds by themselves.Some of the Famous Five series have a marginal degree of realism. By book 17 Blyton appears to be struggling for ideas. This book is far closer to a Scooby Doo episode than the earlier volumes in terms of how it hangs together.This book centres around the illicit mining of "a strange metal". This phrase is repeated over and over. "A strange metal". It's never named.Here are some things to bear in mind about the "strange metal".i) It is worth 100 times its weight in gold. So at today's prices that's about $3,500,000 a kilo. A handful of it, weighing the same as a decent sized bag of sugar, is worth millions of dollars / pounds.ii) It is ridiculously magnetic. Having some far below a hill means that cars and bicycles are pulled towards the ground with such force that they become hard to drive/cycle.iii) It causes mysterious fogs and lights.Now, perhaps it's just me, but I think that people would have a keen interest in a metal that's worth millions of dollars per handful. I further think that such a metal would have a name. And moreover, if its presence was betrayed by subtle signs like EXTREME MAGNETISM, STRANGE LIGHTS and FOG, then people might put two and two together and start digging long before they construct a frikken house on top of the deposit then walk away and leave the house for decades...Anyway, nobody does. It's left to our strange cast of illiterate Welsh/Pakistani peasant girls and gruff shepherds to aid the fabulous five in unravelling this profound mystery.I particularly like how the cunning thieves are using an underground river to float away the "strange metal" they have mined. The stuff is worth millions per handful and they are making off with regular barge-loads of it. We're starting to talk sums here that dwarf the gross national product!Fortunately it's all sorted out in the end thanks to a Welshman's ability to shout very loudly and the power of a small pack of dogs to overpower / intimidate a middle-sized pack of organised criminals engaged in incredibly lucrative illegal activity. Yay! Go goodies!In short then, this is the lowest point in the series so far, remarkable only for the fact that no gypsies were maligned within its pages. Edit: I should give a shout out for the ridiculous cover on this edition. The Famous Five look like James Bonds skiing down the Alps with machine-gun toting baddies on their trail... these are four posh pre-teens on a Welsh hill in the 1940s/50s... and the book spends all of two pages talking about skiing. The Famous Five are having a brilliant time - on holiday in horse-drawn caravans - and they've discovered a ruined castle nearby! The castle looked deserted from a distance - but is that a face at the window? Or is it a trick of the light? The Famous Five just have to find out! Just who is hiding in the castle? About The Author: Enid Blyton, 1896 - November 28, 1959 Enid Blyton was born in London in 1896. She was educated in a private school and thought that she would become a musician until she realized that writing was her passion. She attended Ipswich High School where she trained to become a kindergarten teacher and eventually opened her own school for infants. Blyton's first poem was published in 1917, entitled "Have You-" which appeared in Nash's Magazine. In 1922, her first book of verses was published, entitled "Child Whispers." In 1926 she accepted a position editing the children's magazine "Sunny Stories" as well as writing the column "Teachers World." Blyton's first full length children's book was published din 1938 and was titled "The Secret Island." After working on the column for years, Blyton quit "Teachers World" in 1945 and also ended her stint as editor of "Sunny Stories" seven years later. In 1953 she started her own children's magazine called "The Edith Blyton Magazine" which featured stories about her characters and news on the clubs formed around them. Her most famous stories were those of the "Famous Five" The Magazine closed in 1959. In the 50's and 60's Blyton was criticized for the language in her book, for being to simple, but some 300 are still in print today. Blyton has published over 600 books in the course of her career. Enid Blyton died in her sleep on November 28, 1968. She was 72 years old.

In this tale the Five are banished to the wilds because forgetful Uncle Quentin has to go to a conference over the holidays and for some reason Aunt Fanny has to go with him. And to top it all the cook is ill!Note: in Quentin's excuse he cites that when the children are not at Kirrin they are with Fanny's sister, implying that Julian, Dick, and Anne's mother is Fanny's sister, which would make some sense. However book 1 makes it very clear that their father is Quentin's brother. And whilst it is possible that Quentin's brother married Fanny's sister, nobody ever mentions this and it is overwhelmingly likely that it is another example of Enid Blyton forgetting the details of her most famous story.Now, clearly the Five are too young to survive in George's house without a cook, so the obvious solution is to send them on a cycling tour with Timmy running free alongside, where not only will they have to dodge cars etc, and find fields to camp in, and swim in random unknown lakes, and deal with tramps ... but still have to cook for themselves!Swallowing this non-logic we follow the kids into wilds. The books generally demand a 5th child and in this one they randomly encounter a boy, Richard, who delivers a neatly packaged adventure.Richard is the son of a millionaire who has many enemies. Richard is randomly spotted by his father's former bodyguard who decides to kidnap him. The men with the bodyguard, Rooky, manage to capture Dick by mistake and the bodyguard conveniently vanishes before this error can be spotted.The others manage to track Dick to an isolated house with a wall around it and automatic gates that are worked by some mysterious non-electric (as far as I can tell) mechanism in the house.The story relies on the conceit that it is impossible to escape the grounds when the gates are shut. This is rather hard to buy into, but let's roll with it.The kids try to rescue Dick and are captured in turn, but the still absent Rookie isn't there to identify Richard as the boy he really wants.Anyway, there is some to and fro-ing, They almost escape but the gates are closed and that's an end to it.Timmy serves as a buffer between the criminals and the children. An attempt (one of about a dozen in the series) is made to poison him. The children discover that a man is hiding in a secret room in the house. This provides the "treasure" element so common in the series. The baddies kidnapping children is not sufficient. Treasure must be recovered, and in this case it's a bag of 'sparklers' in the possession of the escaped convict.Our spare child gets to atone for earlier foolishness and to demonstrate some stiff-upper-lipped character growth by escaping to alert the police.Note: The boy's escape depends on the conceit that neither Julian or Dick can fit into the boot of a Bentley, but Richard can... A Bentley is a LARGE vehicle. The idea that a boy can't fit into the boot is hard to swallow.And finally Julian is able to do a Poirot-style walk through, incriminating the baddies and exposing the hidden man with the diamonds.A big bag on nonsense but good enough fun for children. I'm listening to the whole series with my disabled daughter and it seems to be entertaining her pretty well.So this one has kidnapping, 5th child, secret room/passage &amp; attempted poisoning of Timmy. The quality of Enid Blyton's work dips sharply at about the time this book was published. Someone - someone with fearless endeavor - must have felt it his duty to tell her to man up. Hence her last creative bursts of imagination, with Five on Finniston Farm sealing a remarkable life.I must get to Enid Blyton's biography by Barbara Stoney, these days. She is a fascinating figure. I owe a lot of my anglo-centric literary aptitude to her. As for the book itself, it's very much as if it has never visited the editor's workshop.This book is quite like a parody of all things unlikely. The problem here is that the twists of this 'adventure' are pretty much lame. They get solved too easily, yet by their very nature, they ought to be difficult. Suspension of disbelief can only go so far. Enid Blyton's ghostwriters must be spinning in their grave. Ha.

Genuinely don't think I had ever actually listened to this one as a child and so the adventure was all new to me. However, I don't think this is one of the best adventures that the five have as once again it's focused on the boys predominantly, and it's more of a mystery that they just happen to kind of be a part of, rather than true investigation.This is the story of the kids visiting Billycock hill and befriending a young pilot. However, it seems like quickly there is a mystery with the planes at the local airfield and he's implicated...A fun easy read, but nothing too exciting. 2*s from me.
