I can see why this is a classic of Russian Literature. It is beautifully written. It is also a great picture of what Russia was like during the revolution. It is pretty accurate which is why I think it was banned in Russia in the fifties. There is some beautiful symbolism: Zhivago represents the Russian people and the women in his life are representative of the new and old Russia. The weather reflects Zhivago's inner emotional state. If you can stomach the grand sweeping generalizations about human nature, politics and art, you will probably enjoy this book. I am not saying it will keep you up nights, but it is a good read, and an interesting historical phenomenon.

This unusual fictional memoir - in good part autobiographical - narrates without self-pity and often with humor the adventures of a penniless British writer among the down-and-outs of two great cities. The Parisian episode is fascinating for its expose of the kitchens of posh French restaurants, where the narrator works at the bottom of the culinary echelon as dishwasher, or plongeur. In London, while waiting for a job, he experiences the world of tramps, street people, and free lodging houses. In the tales of both cities we learn some sobering Orwellian truths about poverty and of society.

Things go from bad to worse as it all becomes about the money, the guns, and the damned dog.

It has to be assumed that his huge embezzlement of money from the dealership is about to be discovered by father-in-law. When all else falls through, plans he set in motion earlier for two men to kidnap his wife for ransom to be paid by her wealthy father (who doesn't seem to have the time of day for son-in-law). From the moment of the kidnapping, things go wrong and what was supposed to be a non-violent affair turns bloody with more blood added by the minute. Jerry is upset at the bloodshed, which turns loose a pregnant sheriff from Brainerd, MN who is tenacious in attempting to solve the three murders in her jurisdiction.
