Arnold Lobel has written his own fables, one page stories, in this collection. There is a lesson in each one and the lessons are written at the bottom of the page for each story. This is a long book that is a lot to read in one setting, but better spread over a few nights. The artwork is lovely and focuses on the heart of the story. I enjoyed many of these.The kids thought some of these were funny and some of the stories were boring. The nephew loved the pelican who is a mess at dinner. My nephew is so messy. He was the messiest eater as a child. He still can make a mess, but he is better now. I don't think he got the point of the story. No one would invite the pelican over because he was so messy. I think the nephew missed that important point. There were several stories he liked in here. 3 frogs were eaten and he loved that. This was a 4 star book for him.The niece enjoyed the story about a Rhinoceros out shopping for a new dress. She is all gussied up and looks silly. The lesson at the bottom says:’Nothing is harder to resist than a bit of flattery.’ She understood the story and she thought it was funny too. She gave this collection 3 stars.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a work of children's literature by the English mathematician and author, the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, written under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit-hole into a fantasy realm populated by grotesque figures like talking playing cards and anthropomorphic creatures. Although some parts are dated now, as this was originally published in 1991, it's still a good read. I guessed most of the story's conclusion around half-way through, but I believe Mr James didn't want to keep this from the reader by using red-herrings, instead I believe it helps the reader to move with the story. Kate is a believable character with a high likeability factor and the opposite can be said for Dr Swire, who is literately unlike-able right from the moment he's introduced. (I think I also had a slight crush on Patrick).The last final paragraphs are a truly dark yet delicious conclusion that had me smiling and saying to myself, "Couldn't have happened to a more deserving character."Peter James, has an innate ability to make the mundane interesting and the obscure believable and although this book has a smattering of scenarios that may appear implausible when they'd been woven into the text they work well.If Peter James' novels were chocolate, they'd be an expensive Madagascan 80% cocoa blend, and I look forward to breaking of another square and enjoying some more.
