I could say that I love Dick, but that would be weird. I do very much enjoy Philip K. Dick's writing and though this is not one of his best, the "Pizza and Sex Rule" applies to him; ie. just as even bad pizza and / or sex is still pretty good, bad PKD is as well. And this is not bad at all. The first mistake that a new reader would make is to watch Blade Runner and expect a novelization of that film; it was LOOSELY based upon the book. I'm a big fan of the Ridley Scott film starring Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer, but the movie diverged from Phillip K. Dick's literature early on. The book is far more bleak than the film, if you can believe that, and much more intricate and complicated. Blade Runner benefits from a simplified storyline. The author was far ahead of his time both in the complexity of his story and the perspective from which he writes. There are elements of Brave New World, I, Robot, and Dune; but the author has a unique voice and the story is an original. It is not an excellent work, as there are gaps and inconsistencies and many loose ends that are never tied in, but the concept and provocation are superb.One element of the book that was completely left out of the film was a sub-plot involving a Christ-like messiah and a faith system based upon what could have been a hoax. First published in 1968, this was one of his more theological based novels, and a trend that would continue steadily becoming more frequent and invasive until the end of his writing.A MUST read for PKD fans as well as SF/F fans period.

The Aeneid is an epic poem written by Virgil in the 1st century BC. It's hero is Aeneas, a Trojan who travels from Troy to Italy to eventually found Rome. Some argue that The Aeneid is Virgil's answer to Homer's Odyssey and Iliad, combining two genres of the day - travel and war - into one poem. Take that, Homer!No civilization is without a bit of revisionist history: so it was that Virgil picked up the story of Aeneas, which was already floating around at the time, and forged an epic founding myth for Rome. Afterwards doubting his parentage he inquired of the Delphic god and heard himself the word declared before to Laius. Wherefore he fled from what he deemed his father's house and in his flight he encountered and unwillingly slew his father Laius. Arriving at Thebes he answered the riddle of the Sphinx and the grateful Thebans made their deliverer king. So he reigned in the room of Laius, and espoused the widowed queen. Children were born to them and Thebes prospered under his rule, but again a grievous plague fell upon the city. Again the oracle was consulted and it bade them purge themselves of blood-guiltiness. Oedipus denounces the crime of which he is unaware, and undertakes to track out the criminal. Step by step it is brought home to him that he is the man. The closing scene reveals Jocasta slain by her own hand and Oedipus blinded by his own act and praying for death or exile.

I thought, how dumb! Creon was right to imprison her… But later in life, when my personal shibboleths were challenged by my seniors I wouldn't budge. How come?Well, our personal experiences in an amoral world can force our ethical hand, and then we create personal principles. That’s the change that youth endures. We must FIND ourselves.And when we do, it’s: My way or the highway! Not all our moral choices come from upbringing, schooling, or culture. Some are created OURSELVES by our personal idiosyncrasies and histories. A traumatic childhood event can begin the personal conditioning process. So can parental abuse or sibling rivalry. Or, a sudden, earth-shaking shock. We are all different because of our private reactions as well as our parental conditioning. And especially today, because we are freer to choose. But are we luckier? Would Antigone be luckier today? No, because the law is the law, and Creon's law is the Law in Athens. As it is here now.Our freedom becomes a thorn in our side in the end with the endless conditions imposed on it. So we choose sides. And we naturally go for the most personally satisfying side. The other side chooses practical Necessity. Same thing: My way or the highway! But come, says the Law as the Lord says to Isaiah - let us reason together...YES. Let us Reason! For we can indeed lead with our heart - BUT WE MUST FOLLOW WITH OUR HEAD. Exactly as Creon says to Antigone…Like Antigone, and like all kids when faced with their seniors' ultimatums, reasoning is PASSIONATE. For Creon, and us adults, reasoning is HUMAN. It bends. As WE must bend, though not to the extent of committing a Wrong action. And Reason and our Heart TOGETHER will lead us to the Golden Mean.We must charitably bend. And that will Hurt.But you know, adults see kids as unreasonable, and kids sometimes see adults as middle-class moral mediocrities. The impasse isn't going to go away without the Balm of Time. Unfortunately neither Creon or Antigone HAS time! And, really, neither do we.It’s DOWN TO THE CRUNCH time! Time, as Auden says, to face the music:We would rather be ruined than changedWe would rather die in our dreadThan climb the cross of the momentAnd let our illusions die.And we must face that blaring music over, and over again - without sacrificing our personal values. Our personal Cross will turn it to Harmony. And one day its “music will untune the sky.” On that day we will see our life as it really is.And we can finally Face the Face of truth. For it is Good...Anouilh's characters are as real as we are.And his play isn't about compromise, as I thought at 16. It's about living a real life among real people, WIDE AWAKE - with ALL our differences intact!

Forty-year-old Andy, an electronics store shipping clerk, is a stereotypical geek, who plays video games and takes care of his collectible action figures. He has no real friends and spends most of his time away from work by himself. Andy also gets some unexpected suggestions from some standing on the sidelines of his life. Beyond that advice, Andy has to be the one to take the ultimate step to reality, he not only having no practical experience, but also no theoretical experience in that he doesn't even watch or have interest in porn or masturbate. Some of the advice he receives centers on the actual woman who should be his first time. Regardless of that advice, he decides that the woman he truly wants is Trish, a specialty retailer with a somewhat useless bricks and mortar outlet across the street from the electronics store. As Andy pursues then eventually falls for Trish, he has to decide how much of his true self he will divulge to her.

They end up in a small distressed village in India, where the people believe that evil spirits have taken all their children away after a sacred precious stone was stolen.
