It's a pretty hard task to speak out your mind -truthfully- about important people's writings.Umberto Eco is a well known and highly celebrated for his works, philosopher, writer, anthropologist, sociologist and so on, but that doesn't exclude him from critics, ratings and reviews and it shouldn't either.This particular collection is filled with articles targeting mundane vexations of modern life -that he radically hates- and what enables us to face them. Whilst the reader can identify a great mind, a very educated and interesting individual behind those essays, the elitism is too obvious and a very alienating factor in my opinion. Although i'm not a big fan and i find his books mostly overrated, i can not but acknowledge the subtly cynical and quite humorous attacks in things and situations that even now 30 years or so after he wrote most of those pieces, are still relevant. He lambastes bureaucracy, technology, the political scene in general, in his very distinguish way, but he surely misses the mark on some levels sounding more like an overly dramatic broken record. The academic pieces were stronger, very influential and provided food for thought and those were definitely my favorite along with the first one, while the rest were sub-par. All in all 2,5 stars for this interesting and versatile collection of essays.

Forefathers' Eve [Dziady] is a four-part dramatic work begun circa 1820 and completed in 1832 - with Part I published only after the poet's death, in 1860. The drama's title refers to Dziady, an ancient Slavic and Lithuanian feast commemorating the dead. This is the grand work of Polish literature, and it is one that elevates Mickiewicz to a position among the "great Europeans" such as Dante and Goethe.With its Christian background of the Communion of the Saints, revenant spirits, and the interpenetration of the worlds of time and eternity, Forefathers' Eve speaks to men and women of all times and places. While it is a truly Polish work - Polish actors covet the role of Gustaw/Konrad in the same way that Anglophone actors covet that of Hamlet - it is one of the most universal works of literature written during the nineteenth century. It has been compared to Goethe's Faust - and rightfully so. Think about a fantasy book. Think about your favorite fantasy book. Chances are, it included elves or maybe dwarves. It probably had knights or something like them. It was, most likely, heavily influenced by Tolkien, or his successors, and it was probably based, at least in part, on a certain Anglo-saxon, or maybe French, sort of medieval culture. And if you read fantasy, there's probably 15 or so more like it on your bookshelf or your e-reader of choice.So here's my recommendation: put down Lord of the Rings. You've already read it. Put aside that new George R. R. Martin. It'll give him a chance to write a little further ahead, and you'll get a chance to read it again before the next one comes out. Set aside your Jordan, your Eddings or even your Pratchett. Do it, just for a little while. Just for the 2 days or so that it will take you to devour a series of short stories that have a totally different flavor. The stories of Geralt, the Witcher, professional monster hunter, sorcerer, swordsman and mutant. And you should do it for the same reason that you shouldn't have the exact same food at every meal. These short stories will leave you wanting so much more, and by the time you put it down, your last wish will be for the rest of the series to finally be translated from Polish to English so you can find out what happens next.
