YES!! Another great addition in the Pendergast series!I’m sure you can you tell I’m excited to do this review, right? You’ve got to understand that my enthusiasm for this book is also for the series. Almost all the books in this series are entertaining, fun and thrilling. The tension is just lights out.The books are just so good! I mean, isn't that what we want when we read? To be entertained?Thanks Terry for another great buddy read while we travel down Pendergast lane!So, how does this book start? It starts in a small town in Kansas with rows of corn ready for harvest and a killer on the loose. I really thought the setting of Kansas would not work for me in this book and oh boy, I was wrong.Let me paint a scene for you so you’ll get the idea.You’re running and gasping through 12’ rows of corn in the darkest of night. Trying not to trip, you’re completely isolated and lost. There’s a killer racing behind you. You can hear their heavy footsteps as they pace you in the darkness while they scream "MuuuuuuUUUUUUHHHHHHHH!!" Yeah, corn can be frightening folks. Next time you eat some corn on the cob, make sure no one’s breathing loud next to you. o.OPreston and Child are masters at scaring the shit out of you. Seriously, I hope this is on their tombstones when they die because it will be fitting.I read horror books a lot and there were moments in this book that scared the living bejesus outta me.In regards to my ridiculous and sporadic review, this book was great. And awesome. And I loved every damn, corn eatin' minute of it!

My first Ken Follett. Although no pirates are involved, the word “swashbuckling” comes to mind. The story is set in London in the early 1900’s. It’s fiction, but enough real-life characters and events are involved that is has an aura of a historical novel.A Russian anarchist is trying to assassinate a Russian Price, the son of Czar Nicholas. The Prince is in London trying to negotiate an alliance between England and Russia against Germany in what is assumed to be an upcoming war. A very young Winston Churchill is involved in the negotiations. The Prince is staying at the London home of his cousin who married a British Lord. Amazingly, the anarchist used to be her lover back in Russia 17 years ago! And he learns she has a daughter who is 17…. Could it be? The anarchist re-ignites the old flames to earn entrance into the home to try to assassinate the prince.Woven into the story are true historical events. The daughter hears Emmeline Pankhurst speak and joins the suffragette movement. We are given readings from Russian revolutionary pamphlets. Archduke Ferdinand is assassinated near the end of the story.So we have a fast-moving kind of made-for-TV thriller. The coincidences are astounding. We have several just in the nick-of-time escapes and a brave main character managing to catch and disarm a nitroglycerine bomb.The characters are well-developed, especially the anarchist, his Russian former lover, and the daughter. But there is little depth to the writing. It’s more like a historical romance than a historical novel. I was expecting to enjoy this book a lot more! After all, this novel has been written by Ken Follett – the author of my favorite The Eye of the Needle. Unfortunately, I found the book to be pretty mediocre.Anyway, the story revolves around the love triangle involving Jane, a spirited English woman; Ellis, an American spy; and Jean-Pierre, a French doctor-cum-Communist spy. The narrative starts in Paris where Ellis would bust a terrorist cell, and then move to Soviet occupied Afghanistan. Jean-Pierre would be spying on behalf of the Russians and obviously Ellis would turn up to broker a deal with the Afghan resistance on behalf of Uncle Sam.There is some action and suspense. But, the story is full of plot holes. A lot of things didn’t make sense and Jane’s behavior did not fit with her nature. The narrative dragged quite a few times and the end was pretty abrupt.The book did not feel like it was by the author who had written quite a few engrossing war/espionage thrillers.In my humble opinion, this book is not worth your time. There are plenty of good war/espionage thrillers out there. She's All That is your typical high school prom king and queen story and the run in defending the star status in the upcoming election. Having been publicly dumped, Zack defends his discomposure by stating that Taylor is all make-up and wonder-bra and he can make any ordinary girl a prom queen with a similar package. His high-school buddy, Dean Sampson, engages him in a bet following this statement and picks the geeky looking Laney Boggs out of the crowd as the girl Zack must transform into the new prom queen. Zack agrees since he has no option, but as time passes and Laney begins to transform, Zack begins to find her attractive. While all that falls beautifully in place, it's not your typical fairy-tale. Throw in Dean Sampson to complicate the situation, as when he first made the bet he never thought that Zack could rise to the challenge but looking at how Laney has transformed, it looks like Zack could be on a winning streak.
