دیوید تامسن نویسنده کتاب تاریخ اروپا در بیش از 1400 صفحه سعی کرده تغییرات سیاسی ، اقتصادی ، سرمایه داری ، صنعتی ، و هر شاخص دیگری که در اروپا قاره کهن پس از انقلاب کبیر فرانسه به وقوع پیوسته را بررسی کرده و سپس به شرح اثرات آن بپردازد اما حتی در1400 صفحه هم بسیاری از این حوادث خلاصه وار بیان شده اند .واضح است که انگلستان و فرانسه اولی به صورت صنعتی و دیگری به عنوان سیاسی و حقوقی بیشترین تغییرات را در اروپای قرن نوزدهم و سپس جهان به وجود آوردند و کشورهای دیگر مانند روسیه ، بلژیک و ترکیه و سپس پروس و ایتالیا تابع این تغییرات شدند . کتاب به قرن نوزدهم تقریبا به صورت کامل پرداخته و اگرچه شرح جنگهای ( مثلا دوران ناپلئون ) را کامل پوشش نداده اما فضای آن دوران و سپس تغییرات سیاسی پیش آمده را برای خواننده روشن می سازد ، مثلا انقلاب صنعتی انگلستان ، ماشین بخار ، دستگاه ریسندگی و سپس فضای دودگرفته شهرهای کارگری منچستر و لیورپول ، به موازات آن حقوقی که برای کارگران در فرانسه در نظر گرفته و سپس این حق و حقوق یا نظام بیمه به بیشتر کشورهای اروپایی تسری پیدا می کند .به این ترتیب خواننده متوجه می شود که چرا غرب اروپا از شرق آن صنعتی تر یا مثلا شمال صنعتی ایتالیا از جنوب کشاورزی آن به مراتب پیشرفته تر است . سپس استقلال آلمان و ایتالیا می پردازد ، مثلا این که آلمان با جمعیتی بیشتر از فرانسه و قدرت صنعتی به مراتب بیشتر از آن قدرت اول اروپا می شود وجای فرانسه را می گیرد و ایتالیا دیر به بازی تقسیم قدرت و ثروت رسیده و سرش بی کلاه می ماند . سپس استعمار جهان توسط اروپا ،انگلستان ، فرانسه ، هلند ، بلژیک سپس آلمان ، ایتالیا ، اسپانیا و پرتغال مشغول تقسیم جهان شده اند ، اما قدرت فزاینده آلمان در حال انفجار است و جنگ اول اجتناب نا پذیر . شاید یکی از مشکلات این کتاب بیان خشک و صرفا تاریخی آن باشد ، وقایع تاریخی در این کتاب به صورت اثرات آن بیان شده اند و در اواخر کتاب هنگامی که قدرت اروپا کم شده و قدرت های جدید آمریکا و شوروی در حال رقابت هستند نقش اروپا هم در کتاب کاملا کم رنگ شده و بیشتر به مسائل و بحرانهای جهانی و ایجاد انواع سازمانهای بین المللی جهت کاهش بحران ها و نقش آنان در جهان می پردازد . نکته ای که از کتاب می توان آموخت سختی و مشقت بسیار زیاد اروپاییان در گرفتن حق و حقوق خود از حکومتهای دیکتاتوری و سپس پایدار شدن وضعیت دموکراسی و سپس بنیان دولتهای رفاه محور( از بین رفتن فاصله بین دولت و ملت ) و تلاش مستمر و لحظه ای این دولتها برای بالا بردن رفاه و افزایش نقش بیمه در تامین جوامع آنان باشد .  

Louis-Ferdinand Celine's revulsion and anger at what he considered the idiocy and hypocrisy of society explodes from nearly every page of this novel. Filled with slang and obscenities and written in raw, colloquial language, Journey to the End of the Night is a literary symphony of violence, cruelty and obscene nihilism. This book shocked most critics when it was first published in France in 1932, but quickly became a success with the reading public in Europe, and later in America where it was first published by New Directions in 1952. The story of the improbable yet convincingly described travels of the petit-bourgeois (and largely autobiographical) antihero, Bardamu, from the trenches of World War I, to the African jungle, to New York and Detroit, and finally to life as a failed doctor in Paris, takes the readers by the scruff and hurtles them toward the novel's inevitable, sad conclusion.
