I started out loving this book. I mean, seriously, an unapologetic, 1940s, hard-boiled, ghost detective haunting a thirty-something bookstore owner? I'll take Jack Shepard in my head commenting on my gams any day. I'm probably a huge discredit to my women's studies minor, but there's just something about a guy in a fedora calling you a "doll" that gets me every time.Sadly, the editing on The Ghost and Mrs. McClure was verging on horrible. The book is told in first person with occasional forays into limited third, from the ghost's point of view. At least once, a third person sentence slipped through in a first-person chapter. Very distracting. There was also a long dream section where the protagonist recounted a conversation she'd just heard to the ghost, who hadn't accompanied her. It was unnecessary and a classic newbie writer's mistake. I'd expect more from Alice Kimberly, who is actually a pen name for Alice Alfonsi and her husband, Marc Cerasini, who also write the Coffeehouse Mystery series as  Cleo Coyle. I'm also astonished that these sorts of mistakes made it through to publication in a book that, at the very minimum, has been through the hands of two authors, an agent, and an editor. Disappointing!Did I mention how much I love Jack, though?

In this four-episode competition series, five teams are comprised of candy makers, pumpkin carvers, and cake decorators. While working together to create the ultimate Halloween themed display, the competition becomes fierce. One team is eliminated each week and the winner takes home $50,000.

A culinary guessing game in which bakers must decode what type of dessert was made, when all that's left are a few clues. They have to recreate the recipe and the jury will determine how closely it matches the missing dessert.

Twelve finalists and/or future singers (six men and six women) who were selected from America, compete in a talent contest in which they were asked to sing any song they like on this "Star Search" clone. After each song that was sung, the judges, Abdul, Jackson and Cowell, then critique that finalist's chosen song. After each show's ending, America must vote for a finalist to whom they really think their performance is good using this AT&T (now Cingular Wireless) or any other cellular phone to cast votes with. Once the votes are locked in, the judges and America decides who has the most and the least amount of votes, and the contestant with the least amount of votes is eliminated, and it goes on each week's show until the winner is crowned as "American Idol," where he/she wins a recording contract worth up to $1,000,000. The rest of the other finalists to whom they have been voted off before (the runner-up) also get recording contracts, too.
