Well now! It looks like Robert Langdon has nothing on Ennis! And Ennis beat him to the punch, no? Pretty delicious! I'm probably gonna gorge myself on these comics until I get as big as that fat man with the idiot. :)Seriously though, Cassidy makes for a wonderful damsel in distress and he sure can take a lot of punishment, too. Even better was the tiny guest appearances of god, this time moving on from Tulip and giving Cass a little ugly heart-to-heart. Beast! lolAll told, extremely entertaining and obviously nothing scares Ennis. Nothing at all. I'm loving it. Total no-holds-barred glorious shite. Starr was a hoot and a half. Never met a funnier villain. Not for the faint of heart or those who regularly clean their tongues with bars of soap. :)

I really loved book 1 in the Preacher series and found that ever since then my enjoyment of each successive graphic novel has been declining, to the point where I stopped thinking of them as a good investment of £13.99. Graphic novels are expensive things - £13.99 is a lot for something I can read in a day. A book typically occupies my reading time for a month.Still, I was in Forbidden Planet and it had been a long time since I bought volume 5 ... and I caved.#6 is actually the first step up in the series, for me at least. It was better than the few that preceded it, though not as good as the first couple. Perhaps I'm just becoming used to the rather silly vibe that the introduction of Herr Starr and the Grail organisation ushered in.Anyway ... this was more of the same really, more Herr Starr sexual 'deviance', more Saint of Killers excesses (he goes mano a tanko), more Jesse-Tulip-(Irish vampire whose name escapes me ... looked it up: Cassidy) love triangling, more Arse-Face. I enjoyed it. Two of the main characters lose body parts which I guess could be a sign that we're on the home straight now ... it's all fun and games til somebody loses an eye. I think I will hang in there and see how it all ends. Will they find God? What will he have to say for himself?I feel I got £14.50's worth of entertainment from my £13.99.If you have a moment, give the TV serial a go. It's great fun. This is a 3* as in good, rather than a fuck-you 3*I bought this for myself as a Christmas present and I've enjoyed reading it. The artwork is good, the characterisation and dialogue excellent, the story ... not bad. It's significantly better than #4 which nearly turned me away from the series. It does not however (for me) have the brilliance of the first two books. Book one really grabbed hold of me, it was fresh, exciting, unpredictable, I didn't know what I had hold of and I liked it. This episode was more comfortable, time spent chilling with old friends. But really I wanted to be shocked, amazed, to be unable to put it down. And that didn't happen.The artwork, by the late, great Steve Dillon continues to be top notch.At £10.99 a shot it will take some convincing for me to move on to #6. I might put that money down gambling on finding something as good as #1 from some new talent...I should add that I've now watched the first season of the Preacher TV show and I really liked it. Mr. Quincannon! Could you put your meat down for just a moment and have a word with our sponsors? Please? Odin? Please, just this once... would you put your meat down?*shiver* What a creepy MFer. Lordy.I can't quite decide which was worse, the guy from this comic or the iteration in the TV. Both were pretty damn awesome, and there are just a few things you can't quite do on TV but you can in a comic. Oh, who am I kidding. The one in the comic was freaking amazeballs. I loved his lawyer, too.Hell, the whole town of Salvation may have been just a stopover, a place to downshift, to let Jesse get his bearings after all the crap went down in the previous volume, but here's what amazes me most: It's a grand-style western. Stranger comes into town and picks up the badge and tries to put down the bad guys. It worked a hella-well, and I guess I feel kinda blessed now to have read this and see exactly where the entire feel of that short-run of Banshee got its gumption from. :)Oh, yeah, and the reveals were pretty sweet, too, as were the sub-plots. Things are coming out and slapping us in the face pretty regular, now. :) Gotta love it.

Over the last couple years, I've talked a lot about how some things bother me in storytelling. One of the things that bothers me the most is when a child is put in danger in order to grab cheap dramatic tension in a story. Even worse is when a child is hurt/killed/threatened order to build character or establish something about the world.90% of the time it's lazy storytelling of the highest degree, and 9% of the time it's little more than emotional abuse. I think of it as roughly equivalent to fridging someone's love interest. Interestingly, Saga seems to be the exception to this rule for me. There are children in the story, in peril, and it feels real, but I never feel like the storytelling is cheap or making a bullshitty grab for my emotion. One of the many reasons this comic is amazing....

My favorite volume so far! The art? Stunning. The plot? A+.Despite it being one of the shorter volumes, so much happened. I think part of the reason this was so successful was the time jump. The past three volumes have all occurred back to back, and there wasn't much time for new obstacles to pop up. Volume 4 has a new villain who actually frightens me as well as new strain on Alana and Marko's relationship. Not to mention Sophie has grown up into a fierce little girl.Now, I'm not sure if this is really the best volume so far or if I've become more used to the vulgar and abrasiveness of this series, which has allowed me to enjoy the story more. Maybe both?I read the past four volumes in less than 12 hours (they are seriously addictive), so I'm taking a breather. But then watch out! I'll be marathoning the rest for sure.P.S. Can I please adopt Ghüs?

Craig Thompson, for all the lack of works in his bibliography, is one of the best creators working in comics today. Apart from Blankets, he has only released one other major work of fiction. (His third, \
  Habibi\
, will be released this Fall.) [The cutest of meet-cutes.]There are any number of reasons that Thompson's work should be lauded. His art is gorgeous and his brushline expressive. He treats personal topics with a sense of both whimsy and honesty. He writes true experiences, even when they're fictional. And as great as all those things are, there is one idea that stands out in his work that I've yet to see another creator tackle (let alone master) as Thompson has done.His sense of the sacred and his ability to convey it in ink is breathtaking. He offers his readers these holy moments, these frozen, fluid, organic treasures. These sacramentals. Whether he intends to lead the reader into a religious experience or not, his work really is very spiritual. As spiritual as an atheistic holy experience can actually be at any rate. There may be moments in Miyazaki that approach the wonder of the sanctuaries that Thompson builds in Blankets. It's for this reason (among others) that Thompson's second book remains one of my favourites, even years after having first encountered it.The sweetly disturbing sentimental journey that was seeded years earlier in Thompson's Goodbye Chunky Rice finds pregnant fruit in his nearly-600-page opus, Blankets. Semi-autobiographically chronicling (via chrono-thematic structuring) his early life—from his establishment in faith and his discovery of love to his abandonment of that love and his subsequent abandonment of faith—Thompson plays honestly at all times with his story elements, thereby lending his tale an uncanny credibility. And while flashbacks and tangents proliferate, the overarching chiastic structure verifies the reader's intuition that Thompson knows well where he is headed and is going to take you there whether you like it or not.[Kinda want to punch this lady right in the breadbox.]Thompson's illustrated avatar acts, at all times, with striking realism and the chaos of his thoughts is entirely believable—if not exactly illustrative of the average meditative development. The Thompson that frets and plays in Blankets—we'll call him Craig— is highly introspective and acts often in the heat of his youthful emotional turmoil, rather than from a simple, sensible motivation. And though one may often wish to chastise him for such sillinesses, his youthful passion and pendular over-reactions will more than likely endear Craig to readers as they recognize more than a little of themselves in him.This book is a masterpiece of form, symbol, and structure. Tokens bend and writhe and carry narrative significance throughout. Thompson's art here is fluid and is of that less-polished variety found also in Goodbye Chunky Rice and serves well to establish the variety of moods described in his several vignettes.From the perspective of one who grew up both in a faith-community that was friendlier to the arts and in a home whose high standards weren't as strictly enforced, I found his story particularly compelling and tragic. Surrounded by hypocrisy and a weak-kneed, moralistic fundamentalism, the source of his disillusionment is not difficult to see. Perhaps Blankets' greatest quality is the empathy it exerts from the reader. I pitied and cared for Craig. I felt the same for his brother, his parents. I mourned for Raina, Craig's love interest in the book. I grew despondent for her family. More than anything, I wanted to hug each of these characters and make it all right and sensible again. [Man, how brutal to be Thompson's parents, years later to read this panel and think: "Oh crap. I did that to a child? I wanted to surprise him and all he could think about was whether he had sinned? And not even whether he was in trouble but whether he had sinned?"]And the whole while, my anger kindled toward an institutionalization of faith whose expression was not compassion, not mercy, not love. That Craig lived in a locale whose cutural acumen was bent toward a fear and persecution of that which skewed from the status quo is a horror that can be understood (while still remaining a horror). That his subculture should behave identically, built on a foundation of fear when it ought to be built on joy, peace, and love is terrifying. Thompson's work engaged in me a fury for a people and place with which I have no experience. They may not even exist as he portrayed them, but at the least, it is a challenge for me to not hate these characters who actively tear down Craig's life even from a young age. And as someone who actively tries not to hate anyone, consider this a testament to the veracity with which Thompson draws out Craig's life and circumstance.Blankets is an evocative work that should not be missed by any who would appreciate a serious, heartfelt, and magical telling of the tragedy and wonder of what it means to come of age.[review courtesy of Good Ok Bad]

Former insurance claims investigator Nathan Ford heads a team of former top-criminals. They handle 'unorthodox' cases of people unlikely to get their due through regular channels and legal procedures. That often involves stinging or otherwise scamming criminals. Nate's team is altered at times, and his professional as well as personal past repeatedly seems to catch up.

Popular animated series featuring Scooby-Doo, a Great Dane who joins four California high school students (Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy) on many quests to solve strange mysteries. Each mystery is current and unusual and involves the group stopping someone from wreaking certain havoc on the world. The gang were always driving in the Mystery Machine, returning from or going to a regular teenage function, when their van develops engine trouble or breaks down for a variety of reasons. Their (unintended) destination turns out to be suffering a monster problem, and the gang volunteers to investigate the case. Eventually, enough clues are found to convince the gang that the ghost or monster was a villain. Invariably, the ghost or monster was apprehended and revealed to be an apparently blameless authority figure or otherwise innocuous local who uses the disguise to cover up a crime or scam. After proclaiming "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!", the villain was then taken away to prison, and the gang was allowed to continue on their way to their destination.

He maintains order over a squad room of detectives who gamble for a hobby, get hit on by anything in skirts, go to renaissance philosophy conventions for fun, and would really prefer to be writing. Nearly all of the action takes place in the squad room where the citizens and criminals are brought in to complicate the mix.

After WW II, she returned to the Island, only to encounter Steve Trevor Jr., agent for IADC, thirty years later. Seeing the amazing coincidence as a sign, she returns to the Man world once more to resume her role as the greatest of the female superheroes.

Quick-witted, fast-paced snappy comedy about rural folk getting by in a small town.

At the end of their stint in Vietnam, Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith and his team were framed for robbing the Bank of Hanoi (which they had done, but under orders), and sent to a US military prison. They escaped and went on the run, pursued first by Colonel Francis Lynch and later by Colonel Roderick Decker and finally by General Harlan "Bull" Fullbright. While on the lam, they became heroes for hire, working as good-guy vigilantes around the United States or the world. Hannibal was their leader and an expert at disguises. Templeton "Face(man)" Peck was the team's con artist and ladies man. Bosco Albert "BA" (or "Bad Attitude") Baracus was their mechanic, but also took care of mayhem and intimidation. The final member of the Team, H.M "Howling Mad" Murdock, was an expert pilot, and a certified lunatic--they broke him out of a mental hospital whenever they needed him for a mission.
