Steppenwolf is a poetical self-portrait of a man who felt himself to be half-human and half-wolf. This Faust-like and magical story is evidence of Hesse's searching philosophy and extraordinary sense of humanity as he tells of the humanization of a middle-aged misanthrope. All right, I finally finished this one. About halfway through I realized it had the potential to be a huge stinker, and I'm sorry to say that was borne out. While T.C. Boyle is a very good writer--The Tortilla Curtain is a work of the highest art--what keeps him from being a great one is that he tries to do too much sometimes. Talk Talk is supposed to be a thriller, Ok? And I'm all right with an author playing around with the conventions of a genre, but only when it's cool and fresh and doesn't detract from the flow of the story because, after all, what is a thriller without a good flow? Answer me this: if this is a thriller, then why does Boyle stop, herky-jerky, and insist on expounding on little lyrical moments at the most inopportune times? I mean, do I really need to know how the humid air is pounding on a character's face like a sledgehammer in the middle of a frantic foot race through traffic? I'm making up that specific poetic brush stroke, but he interrupts the flow of his most viscerally entertaining moments way too often.I'm sorry to say this, because it feels dirty to say, but he's too in love with the English language for his own good. Which is fine if you want to write a book of poetry, but please, Lord, if you're writing about a high-tempo cross-country car chase, please do not tell us about the roses at the side of the highway. It's just weird. Skip this one.

But their smartness can't avoid them losing their bearings in the truthlessness, pain and spiritual poverty of late 20th century, western society. They are heroic people too. Invariably they face up to their failures and they perish with full conscience of their shortcomings and the wounds inflicted on others. It is this willingness to ultimately see truth in the eye which makes a Frisch novel often such a moving journey.However, more than anything else it is the truth of Max Frisch' language that keeps drawing me to his work. I have alluded to the `precision', `directness' and `warmth' of his prose. It is really very difficult to put the finger on the very particular texture of his writing. Every sentence has weight. Individual words are clearly etched against a luminous background and yet together they form a balanced whole. There is also a most peculiar tension between a certain timelessness - derived from an apparent simplicity and honesty in the choice of words and structure of sentences - and graphic references to very specific circumstances of time and place. Frisch has been an inveterate traveler and this cosmopolitanism has always pervaded his books. Remarkably, also in our age of widespread and unrestrained traveling, I remain mesmerised by the exoticism of his locales (whether it's his beloved Ticino, Greece, Cuba or US). When Frisch reminisces about a trip to the Greek island of Mykonos, there is still the `frisson' of the unknown, as if we are undertaking the long-anticipated trip ourselves for the very first time. Similarly, when, from an airplane window, he watches the sunlight vanish from the summit of the Finsteraarhorn (in the Bernese Alps), it is as if we are witnessing this mundane and yet timeless spectacle ourselves.I would ultimately characterise Frisch' prose as "earthy" and that is at the same time a phenomenological, esthetic, moral and epistemological quality. It is phenomenological because it tells us how the earth is perceived by our senses. It is esthetic because it tells us how the earth bestows her grace on human affairs. It is moral because it tells us what the earth commands. It is epistemological because it tells us how the earth separates truth from untruth.In that deeper sense, all of Frisch' work is truthful. And that is why I really don't care whether everything happened as described on those days, sometime in 1974. He might as well have made up every bit of "Montauk": I would love it nonetheless.

Daisy's grandmother was a resident at that home, which is where she first met Benjamin. Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact throughout their lives, reconnecting in their forties when in age they finally match up. Some of the revelations in Benjamin's diary are difficult for Caroline to read, especially as it relates to the time past this reconnection between Benjamin and Daisy, when Daisy gets older and Benjamin grows younger into his childhood years.

McMurphy has a criminal past and has once again gotten himself into trouble and is sentenced by the court. To escape labor duties in prison, McMurphy pleads insanity and is sent to a ward for the mentally unstable. Both Janie and Angela can see Lester's sexual infatuation with Angela, who courts such attention from any man as a sign that she is model material, she having once appeared in Seventeen and is a career to which she aspires. Lester's infatuation with Angela gives him a reenergized view on life, where he openly doesn't care anymore what anyone thinks about what he does, anyone except Angela. This infatuation coincides with the Fittses moving in next door: homophobic disciplinarian US Marine Colonel Frank Fitts who rules the house with a military fist (that fist being both figurative and literal), his semi-comatose wife Barbara Fitts, and their bright and quietly subversive 18-year-old son Ricky Fitts, who openly abides by his father's rules while behind the scenes lives by his own quite different perspective. Much like Lester's infatuation, Ricky immediately becomes infatuated with Jane; he considers girls like Angela as ordinary. The entry of Angela and the Fittses into the Burnhams' lives ultimately leads to each of the players confronting what is truly in his or her heart.

Exactly one week in the life of a young man named Paterson of Paterson, New Jersey is presented. He lives an extremely regimented and routinized life, that routine perhaps most vividly displayed by the fact that he is able to wake up at exactly the same time every day without an alarm. That life includes eating Cheerios for breakfast, walking to work carrying his brown bag lunch packed in his lunch pail by his wife Laura, having a casual chat with his colleague Donny before he begins his shift driving the #23 Paterson bus for the local public transit company, walking home where he straightens out the exterior mailbox which somehow during the day gets knocked crooked, eating dinner with Laura and listening to her goings-on of the day, taking Laura's English bulldog Marvin - who he would admit to himself he doesn't much like - out for a walk to his neighborhood bar where he has one and only one beer before walking home with Marvin. There are day to day variations which are often the result of how certain other routines associated to him manifest themselves, such as what drama will occur in the relationship of Marie and Everett who are always at the bar together despite her always saying that they are no longer together, or in what form Laura's unique and distinctive design sense will affect Paterson's life directly or indirectly. Paterson's keen observances of what happens around him are largely the bases for the poems he writes, he constantly thinking of these and writing them in his secret notebook whenever he has a spare moment during his day. But Theo's sole mission becomes to help Kee at any cost for the survival of the species.

From a humble background and with traditional values, Irish Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is still struggling financially despite being a recently retired high ranked tennis pro. Chris has to decide if he can give up what he has been able to achieve with Chloe and the Hewetts, or if the passion he feels for Nola is stronger than the finer things in life to which he is now accustomed. He may go to any length to have his cake and eat it too.

The movie is based on the infamous "Stanford Prison Experiment" conducted in 1971. A makeshift prison is set up in a research lab, complete with cells, bars and surveillance cameras. For two weeks 20 male participants are hired to play prisoners and guards. The 'prisoners' are locked up and have to follow seemingly mild rules, and the 'guards' are told simply to retain order without using physical violence. Everybody is free to quit at any time, thereby forfeiting payment. In the beginning the mood between both groups is insecure and rather emphatic. But soon quarrels arise and the wardens employ ever more drastic sanctions to confirm their authority.

GERTY tells him that a rescue team named Eliza will come to the station to clean up the aftermath of the accident. After his recuperation, he takes an unauthorized trip back to the broken harvester, where he makes an unexpected discovery. Because of his find, he begins to doubt his sanity, then his true identity, then the company and GERTY's willingness to do what is best for him. Because of his resulting beliefs, his sole mission becomes how to get back to Earth on his own.
