Long acknowledged as a master of nightmarish vision, H.P. Lovecraft established the genuineness and dignity of his own pioneering fiction in 1931 with his quintessential work of supernatural horror, At the Mountains of Madness. The deliberately told and increasingly chilling recollection of an Antarctic expedition's uncanny discoveries --and their encounter with an untold menace in the ruins of a lost civilization--is a milestone of macabre literature.

This early work by H. P. Lovecraft was originally published in 1924. Born in 1890 in Rhode Island, USA, Lovecraft began writing at a very young age, quickly developing a deep and abiding interest in science. In 1913, Lovecraft joined the UAPA (United Amateur Press Association) but it was four years later, in 1917, that he began to focus on fiction, producing such well-known early stories as 'Dagon' and 'A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson'. However, it was during the last decade of his life that Lovecraft produced his most notable works, such as 'the Dunwich Horror' and 'The Call of Cthulhu' which subsequently earned him his place as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

I could say that I love Dick, but that would be weird. I do very much enjoy Philip K. Dick's writing and though this is not one of his best, the "Pizza and Sex Rule" applies to him; ie. just as even bad pizza and / or sex is still pretty good, bad PKD is as well. And this is not bad at all. The first mistake that a new reader would make is to watch Blade Runner and expect a novelization of that film; it was LOOSELY based upon the book. I'm a big fan of the Ridley Scott film starring Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer, but the movie diverged from Phillip K. Dick's literature early on. The book is far more bleak than the film, if you can believe that, and much more intricate and complicated. Blade Runner benefits from a simplified storyline. The author was far ahead of his time both in the complexity of his story and the perspective from which he writes. There are elements of Brave New World, I, Robot, and Dune; but the author has a unique voice and the story is an original. It is not an excellent work, as there are gaps and inconsistencies and many loose ends that are never tied in, but the concept and provocation are superb.One element of the book that was completely left out of the film was a sub-plot involving a Christ-like messiah and a faith system based upon what could have been a hoax. First published in 1968, this was one of his more theological based novels, and a trend that would continue steadily becoming more frequent and invasive until the end of his writing.A MUST read for PKD fans as well as SF/F fans period.

Guts, the feared Black Swordsman, is on the rampage — and it's personal. I don't recall reading another fictional series that has changed so much like "Berserk". It started in the eighties as a savage, brooding, dark as hell (quite literally) story that for many defined how gruesome this genre could be. These days the series deals with most of the characters we are familiar with (those that have survived), but they involved with hijinks that fall into the high fantasy genre. This is now a story about adventurers sailing to the land of elves so the "king" of that land can help them navigate through the dreams of a cursed person to recover her memories. It used to be about literally battling demons to save your loved ones from being raped and devoured, or meeting a nice family only for them to get raped, dismembered and mounted on spikes by a monstruous pursuing army, or rescuing naked female villagers from a nasty cave in which far nastier trolls rape them repeatedly so the women will give birth explosively to a new brood of trolls. These days the author draws some gruesome foes almost because he should, instead of because the mood of the story demands it. In the middle of it all, our protagonist Guts, a big, brooding swordsman who when he gets into his berserker state he can't tell friend from foe, is now like an anachronism: the lost and obsolete survivor of a bygone era.The author clearly loves his characters. He's been with them for decades, and at this point they are almost his children. Unfortunately you can no longer believe that the threats they face are really serious. Guts' posse includes a child and two teenagers who never get harmed in any significant way although the group faces nasty opponents. "Berserk" at this point is not so much a dramatic series but a way to hang out with characters you are fond of. I'm not mad about it: I'll keep reading. But it's quite clear for me that the series will end with the author's death. Are we really to believe that Guts is in any position to (view spoiler)[stop Griffith? And why, despite Griffith's "number one anime betrayal" in the turning point of this series? If Guts somehow manages to destroy Griffith, there goes the last hope for humanity to survive in a world that has turned upside down. And it doesn't seem that our protagonist wants to bother (hide spoiler)]

What Guts the Black Swordsman and his companions had seen as an island refuge for monstrous sea creatures and the ghost ship of the demonic Bonebeard is, in fact, the very lair of the malefic sea god that controls them. With no avenue of escape, Guts must once again don the Berserker armor to give his company any chance of survival. But without the protective influence of the sorceress Schierke, Guts risks being forever lost within the cursed armor and becoming an even greater threat to his comrades
