I'm in bed - again -today with some type of nasty bug - a relapse from last week...a traveling flu bug? cold? allergies? It's now in my chest...Right when I'm reading the interview on Goodreads from Fredrick Backman about his new-HIT- novel BEARTOWN - my doorbell rings. A delivery guy brought a huge vase of flowers from our daughter, Katy. Tomorrow is Mother's Day! (sweet daughter)Paul got the door - brought the flowers to the nightstand next to my bed. I told Paul what I had just read about Fredrick Backman. ( brought back memories for us)When Backman was asked what his favorite books were, he said...."his biggest hero is Astrid Lindgren who wrote "Pippi Longstocking" and his favorite book of all time "The Brothers Lionheart".....,( a book I'm now curious to read myself).....Paul and I immediately started thinking about our daughter who played the title role of Pippi Longstocking in the world premiere Bay Area musical when she was 11 years old. While looking at my mother's Day flowers from our 35 year old daughter.... Fredrick brought back an abundance of memories. The copy of this book is packed away in a keepsake box. It's filled with lots signatures from cast members... congrats- luv notes from mom &amp; dad.The play was performed at The Montgomery theater - downtown San Jose. Tons of production work went into a 'new pre-premier' musical. In the opening scene ....Katy had those red funny looking braids in her hair -A red and white striped T-shirt.... Red and white striped leggings... and roller skates on her feet. The stage was empty... The opening musical number begins with her skating onto the stage singing a very catchy solo tune - long run-together-rhythmic- sentences singing - while skating - that she is "Pippi Longstocking", The strongest Little Girl in the World"... The play followed the book - plus music. -- Great story... with a monkey - a horse - and two best friends. Great cast - fun show - lots of happiness from everyone. There is one very sad part of this memory. About six months after this show ended - the director ( not musical director), died of AIDS. It was the very first person that our daughter knew who died of AIDS. He was a young talented wonderful man. Before he died...( a couple of weeks before)..... there was a huge "life celebration" in Don's honor. Don was in a wheelchair at Vasona Park. Families and friends, people in his theater world kids in the Pippi show all came. I remember like yesterday. Still brings tears to my eyes. -- so.... Pippi was the last play he directed too! If I had not read "The Goodreads", interview with *Fredrick Backman*, today ( mail backed up for weeks)....I would have missed this recall memory....Thank you .... for those who read this.Wishing ALL THE CARETAKERS of children ... and Mothers everywhere a HAPPY MOTHER'S day tomorrow!!!!

Y'all, Mark frickin Hamill narrates the audiobooks for this series, and that's worth the price of admission all by itself imo. Each human gets a subtly different voice, and he never tries to voice a woman with a falsetto! (Four for you, Mark Hamill. You go, Mark Hamill.) And all of the fae sound different and frickin COOL and I just love Mark Hamill, you guys.As for the books themselves, they are fun and spooky, but contain more (off-screen) animal death than I like*.SPEAKING OF WHICH, here are things that I, an unofficial Holly Black scholar, have noticed that she seems to like:1. Angry women with swords (who doesn't tho)2. Twins3. Being mean to fictional people's fictional pets4. Cinnamon in coffee (doesn't happen in these ones, but yeah. also, hard same.)And faeries, of course.OH and who the FUCK let these children read Tithe?? Because that's the only one of Black's books about faeries that would have been available in 2003. Idk about DiTerlizzi, but I he's written stuff about magical critters so maybe that's what they read?? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯EDIT: Except I am 99% sure that the Grace kiddos make a pre-Spiderwick cameo in Ironside so????? Idek?????Anyway, I will absolutely listen to the rest of them. This one only took about 2 (1ish hour each) hours from start to finish, so just right for my attention span right now in these Trying Times.*which is anything more than NONE, but anyway

Yes, I know I'm hardly the target demographic, but...Paddington, like William Brown, Jennings and a whole horde of Blytons is an integral part of my childhood, and thankfully, the recent film based on Michael Bond's little Peruvian marmalade guzzler did not disappoint. This, the novelisation of the film is not by Bond, but is a faithful retelling (and based very closely on the screenplay) of the actual film. Naturally it is not short on sweetness, sentiment and jokes and Paddington remains what he always has been, an innocent, child-like creature filled with natural wisdom and charm. Watching the film last week made me fall in love with him in exactly the way I did when I was seven years old, and the purchase of the book has added to my somewhat battered collection of Paddington paperbacks. Great stuff.

I will admit I had high hopes for this movie, and then left the theater disappointed. The ending was not well-edited and I thought the outcome had been different from what I expected. I felt let-down by the story instead of uplifted. So, I decided to read the book to explore the ending again, and this time I was not disappointed. So, the film's editor must not have done a very good job at portraying what really happened at the end, but the author did. Ah, how often that very scenerio is true! Anyway, this book was delightful and would make a good read-aloud with your elementary-aged children.
