This book tells us not to believe to soothsayer. God has his willing. Think first before we believe what people said.The story began with a terrible storm in the village that scared everyone, especially because the druid was not in the village. Then, the soothsayer came and told everything, people began to belive what he said. Not only the Gaul, even the Roman believed what he said. That's why we need to think clearly before we believe what people said, especially if that come from a big mouth person.

Asterix and the Normans (Asterix, #9), René GoscinnyThe story begins with Vitalstatistix (The chief of the Gaulish village) receiving a missive from his brother Doublehelix in Lutetia (Paris), to ask for the education of Doublehelix's teenage son, Justforkix. Justforkix then arrives in a sports car-like chariot. The village holds a dance in honor of his arrival; but he is unimpressed by the traditional way of dancing, snatches Cacofonix's lyre, and sings and plays in the manner of Elvix Preslix (the Rolling Menhirs in the English version). Some of the younger villagers dance to this new form; but Cacofonix tries to show off his own skills, and is struck down by Fulliautomatix. Justforkix thereupon suggests that Cacofonix's talents would be better appreciated in Lutetia. ...Meanwhile, a Norman crew arrive in Gaul to discover "the meaning of fear", on grounds that they are fearless to the point of not understanding the concept, but have heard of people "flying in fear", and believe that being afraid will grant them the ability to fly. Most of the Gauls welcome the chance of a fight; but Justforkix is horrified and decides to return home. Viewing Justforkix as an expert in fear, the Normans kidnap him to teach them; but this fails, and he remains their prisoner until Asterix and Obelix come to the rescue. A small Roman patrol is also involved in the resulting fight. At length, Norman chief Timandahaf orders an end to the battle and explains his mission to the Gauls. To teach the Normans fear, Asterix sends Obelix to fetch Cacofonix, while himself remaining as a hostage. Ah, Asterix in Corsica! One of the best albums of the series according to me. This album smells good the smell of maquis, with a touch of cheese that stinks. ..Our two Gauls will accompany a hostage in his country of origin. It is therefore in the company of the proud Ocaterinabellatchictchix that Astérix and Obelix will discover Corsica.Aesthetically, it's more than a success: the landscapes are beautiful, the inhabitants are picturesque and nicely caricatured! The women dressed in black, the little old people sitting on a ban making comments about everything, the maquis with wild pigs and legionaries lost ... I love and that's all!

Whenever Cacofonix strikes up a tune, his singing sends the sun behind the clouds and causes the rain to fall. Sometimes, though, that "talent" can come in mighty handy. This is a complete guide not only to Asterix books, the way the Authors came to create their characters and inspire themselves throughout more than 30 years, but also a very interesting explanation of the English translations - including data on both translators, curious details about the translation of the names of the characters (something quite relevant as a part of the character's personality is rendered through the name). Loved reading this and recognized some parts of the Asterix books I have already read. Made me feel wishful about reading the other ones as well!Maria Carmo,Lisbon, 25 March 2015.

How can lovely Queen Cleopatra show Julius Caesar that ancient Egypt is still a great nation? Her architect Edifis recruits his Gaulish friends to help him build a magnificent palace within three months. There are villainous saboteurs to be outwitted, but Asterix, Obelix and Getafix still find time to go sight-seeing - and leave their mark on the pyramids and the Sphinx's nose.

One little ancient British village still holds out against the Roman invaders. Asterix and Obelix are invited to help. They must face fog, rain, warm beer and boiled boar with mint sauce, but they soon have Governor Encyclopaedicus Britannicus's Romans declining and falling. Until a wild race for a barrel of magic potion lands them in the drink. It's not quite cricket - how about a nice cup of hot water, though? Or even the first ever tea-party?

Great fun reading this again for first time in nearly 40 years! A perfect light reading accompaniment to Lindsey Davis’s Didius Falco series, and I love the way the Asterix books have a really international following, as the reviews show.

This one features Asterix, Obelix and Chief Vitalstatistix, on an adventure, our heroes take their beloved chief to a Hydro Spa in the countryside, near Gergovia, as he's got some intestinal issues...While touring, they meet a Roman envoy, who gets smacked, and a coal merchant named Winesandspirix. There's a connection between the new friend and their chief, but not known to anyone yet.Meanwhile, the envoy meets with Caesar, who decides he doesn't like the natives of that particular area getting restless (check your history!) and demands the Shield of Vercingetorix, which he was presented after defeating the Great Gaulish/Celtic chief.This sets off a long chain of events, a race to find where the shield is, who has it, and of course, it should transpire that the shield belongs to. One other than Chief Vitalstatistix, who was given it by a young Winesandspirix after the Battle of Alessia and defeat of Vercingetorix, to help the young warrior lift his spirits. In fact, it's the same shield our chief is already paraded around on by his long suffering shield bearers.This leads to the humiliation of the Roman garrison at Gergovia, and Caesar punishes them all, after seeing Vitalstatistix triumph on the shield of Vercingetorix.Although it features Caesar, he's not the main antagonist, and though he's embarrassed, as usual, he doesn't punish or attack the Gauls. Goscinny and Uderzo didn't seem to hate Caesar, and there is a begrudging respect between our Heroes and Julius, which developed over the series. This makes him a far more interesting character.Not to,forget our chief and his health issues, when he arrives back from treatment at Winesandspirix place, he's skinny as heck, which is how the coal merchant recognized him from all the years back. Of course, things are what they are, and by the time they return to our village, the chief is back to his robust self, and even though the compulsory feast is held, his wife refuses to allow his attendance!\

The brave Iberians are holding out against Julius Caesar, like Asterix and his friends. So when Chief Huevos y Bacon's son is taken hostage, who better to recuse him than the Gauls? Taking him home to Hispania, now Spain, they tangle with the tourist industry and flamenco, and face a wild aurochs in the arena - or bullring. And can it be true? Cacofonix finds a fan in little Pepe!

One of the very first Asterix books I can remember reading as a kid. And it’s as good as ever.The title leaves no room for interpretation, this story does in fact take place at the Olympic Games. In an effort to irritate the Romans, the Gauls set off for Greece to take part in the games (as Romans, of course, since they are part of the empire and would otherwise not be allowed to compete). The kicker? They plan on using the magic potion to make a clean sweep of all the events.This doesn’t work as planned. Not having done their research, they are made aware of the fact that performance enhancing drugs aren’t allowed mere days before the games commence. This little technicality causes a problem (not only did all the men in the village come along for the ride, there now exists the very real possibility that the Gauls are going to get egg on their faces since nobody has actually trained for any of the sporting events). Fortunately Getafix and Asterix aren’t outdone that easily.In the end it’s a triumph of brains over brawn.And, of course, let's not forget all the wonderful references to Ancient Greek culture.Bonus 1: this story contains a Roman athlete named Gluteus Maximus.Bonus 2: look out for Asterix’s striped orange shorts.

I came across the first book in this series Asterix the Gaul on “Guardians 1000 books to read before you die” list, liked it enough to give this, the second book a try. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality, not just of the writing but also the graphic drawings. Goscinny wrote the first book around 1960, and even though he died in 1977, the series continues with the 37th edition published in 2017.

It is the second book to be both written and drawn by Albert Uderzo. Devius Surreptitious, the head of M.I.VI, service, to send an agent to infiltrate the Gauls. This agent is a Gaulish-Roman druid known as Dubbelosix, who travels in a folding chariot full of secret devices. Dubbelosix and Surreptitius communicate via a carrier fly, who develops a crush for Dubbelosix. Set in 50 BC, all of Gaul (ancient France) is conquered by Julius Caesar’s Roman army. All? One small village still holds out against the Romans: Asterix’s village. And it’s thanks to their druid Getafix’s magic potion which gives them superhuman strength! In Asterix and the Banquet, one of the earliest Asterix adventures, Inspector General Overanxius orders a stockade be built around the rebel village to contain them so Asterix makes a bet with the Roman. He and his best friend Obelix (don’t call him fat!) will go on a tour of Gaul, collecting the finest regional food and drink and bring them back to the village for a banquet, proving that they are free to move within their own country, stockade or no. The race is on! I think the Banquet was the first Asterix book I read cover to cover when I was a kid - before then I’d just pick up a book and randomly leaf through it, staring at the pictures, maybe reading a word bubble or two (I was, like, 5!). Re-reading it as an adult, it’s amazing how appealing the comic still is and not just in a nostalgic way. Rene Goscinny’s script is tight and fast-moving - it has to be, the book is only 43 pages long! And even though each half page (usually about 5-6 panels) was serialised in magazines and newspapers, collected into the books, they read seamlessly. It helps that Albert Uderzo’s art is so gorgeous with bright colours and wonderfully designed locations, bringing the ancient world to life with startling vivacity. I didn’t realise this book was also Dogmatix’s first appearance (Obelix’s dog). He just shows up out of nowhere, standing outside a pork butcher’s shop in Lutetia, Asterix and Obelix’s first stop, and follows our heroes from then on. He’s not named yet though and our heroes don’t acknowledge him until the very end when Obelix turns to notice him in one panel. Fulliautomatix, the village’s blacksmith, is also not a final character yet either. He’s here in name only but his character design is very different from the later books, and his running joke will be the guy who beats up Cacofonix (the village’s bard) whenever he tries to sing. As I remembered, the visuals for black people are quite racist too - big cartoony red lips - but then again everyone’s drawn cartoony. I’m not saying it’s right but it’s worth noting that this book was published in 1963 and that was still more-or-less the norm of how black people were portrayed in comics so it probably doesn’t reflect the creators’ beliefs (I even remember getting Gollywog badges from Robertson’s Golden Shred marmalade in the ‘90s - that’s how long these negative images persisted!). The story’s a bit flimsy if you start to think about it - basically the magic potion makes the whole thing pointless. I mean, why don’t they just knock down the stockade themselves, and why are they afraid of the Romans at all when they smash them up whenever they encounter them? But then we wouldn’t have the fun adventure so I’ll give it a pass. Strangely for a French comic translated into English, a lot of the humour is linguistic with more than a few puns that are a bit cheesy, but I still love a lot of the physical gags. Like when the Romans are trying to put our heroes in chains but they keep breaking out because of their super-strength, and the repeat joke of the Pirates still gets me. I’m amazed and delighted that Asterix comics still have a powerful effect on me, years after first reading them. The Banquet is a wonderful read and probably one of the best comics in this series, suitable for, and recommended to, readers of all ages. By Toutatis, this book is great!

Julius Caesar sends Caius Preposterus, a bright young graduate of the Latin school of Economics, to corrupt the indomitable Gauls by introducing them to big business. Obelix's menhir trade is soon thriving, backed by a heavy advertising campaign - but does wealth bring happiness? Caesar has a plan to defeat the rebel Gaulish village once and for all - if they won’t fall in line, he’ll build Roman civilization around them and force their culture upon them! His brilliant young architect Squareonthehypotenus will build... The Mansions of the Gods! I always liked Mansions of the Gods but re-reading it today I didn’t realise how damn funny it is! The characters’ reactions are very extreme which helps. The centurion tasked with helping the architect is superstitious and terrified of the Gauls so he demands the slaves only work at night - except all of them sing LOUDLY while they work. He becomes a nervous wreck as one group of slaves bursts into their nation’s music after the other and he’s so scared the Gauls will be woken up and punch him! Getafix has magic acorns for re-growing the trees the slaves uproot in the night (poor Dogmatix - he loves trees and hates seeing them uprooted!) so night after night the Romans work and the next night discover the trees have regrown. The architect slowly becomes a nervous wreck and it’s glorious! And later on in the book, Cacofonix, the village bard… oh, big belly laugh on his scene! There’s some subtext I didn’t notice when reading this as a kid: Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo appear to be criticising trade unions as they’re portrayed here as greedy and encouraging laziness in workers. The influx of Roman tenants nearby turns the Gaulish village into a gaudy tourist trap, the creators criticising modern tourism and what it does to beautiful rural communities. There are A LOT of racist caricatures here so heads up for that. It’s a comic from 1971 and it’s so good - well written, wonderfully drawn, and so, so funny and clever - but, yeah, it’s kinda racist and that’s a shame. I don’t think the creators meant it in any hateful way and black people aren’t portrayed any more negatively than other slaves but there’s no escaping those red, red lips. Le sigh. The Mansions of the Gods is another great Asterix comic that reads just as well - maybe better? - to grown-up audiences as it does to kids. It’s a good laugh and an excellent comic. If, like me, it’s been a while since you read these books, they’re well worth a re-read. New readers are in for a treat!

The plot of this one will likely appeal to romantics, but it’s a bit silly, on the face of it, to be fair. I can’t see the “last holdouts” against the Roman invaders sending their two best warriors away to look for the boyfriend of a young Gaulish girl on a whim just because Obelix is infatuated. (The poor sod in question, one Tragicomix, was drafted into the Roman Legion). Fortunately, despite the rather thin premise that kicks off the main narrative, Goscinny and Uderzo pull this one off with maneuvering space to spare. Asterix and Obelix (actually) join the Roman Legion, along with a motley and delightful bunch of other recruits (from other Roman occupied countries such as Egypt, Greece, Britain et al). There is lots of room for comedy and the authors exploit it mercilessly. After basic training, which is a treat, the troops set off for Africa, where Tragicomix was sent as well. It’s a grand adventure too, with the backdrop being Caesar’s civil war against Pompey, and particularly the African conflict with Metellus Scipio and the Battle of Thapsus (in Tunisia). There’s a bit of an epic sweep to this entry, which brings something new to the series. There is some scathing satire on the nature of civil war, and of course some bittersweet comedy pertaining to Obelix being in love.Good stuff!
