 "Rip Van Winkle" is considered by some critics to be one of the finest early American short stories. Almost everyone knows the basic story, but I'd guess not all that many people have actually read Washington Irving's original story. **Warning: if you're one of those vanishingly rare people who's not familiar with this story, there are major spoilers after the next picture below.** It took a little digging to find the full original version of this old story online; it turns out that it's included in a collection of stories by Washington Irving called The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., available for free at Gutenberg here. Rip van Winkle is a villager living in New York state, just before the American Revolution in the 1770s. He's also a layabout who likes hunting and hanging out at the tavern with friends, but not so much working on his farm. I had never realized how totally useless as a husband Rip Van Winkle was, and how extremely shrewish his wife was. Rip is willing to help anyone else but is a complete failure at providing for his own family; his wife spends every waking moment nagging and yelling at him. They make each other completely miserable.  So it's almost for the best when one day Rip goes walking in the mountains and meets up with a group of outlandish men playing nine-pins and drinking from a flagon. Rip helps himself to their liquor, and eventually falls into a drunken sleep. Twenty years later he wakes up and makes his way back to his village, to find that America is now independent from Britain, his children have grown, his wife has died, and he can now sit around and be lazy in peace, respected as a patriarch of the village and a symbol of the old times. I've looked at some critics' analyses of "Rip Van Winkle," and there are some intriguing ideas about what this story means: * A symbol of America's escape from British rule, with Britain playing the role of the mean, despotic wife. * A commentary on how the more things change, the more they stay the same. * A cautionary tale about people who live irresponsible lives and rely on other people to take care of them:Rip's daughter took him home to live with her; she had a snug, well-furnished house, and a stout cheery farmer for a husband, whom Rip recollected for one of the urchins that used to climb upon his back. As to Rip's son and heir, who was the ditto of himself, seen leaning against the tree, he was employed to work on the farm; but evinced an hereditary disposition to attend to any thing else but his business.It is interesting how Rip's passive personality doesn't really change over the course of the story. The news that his wife has died affects his life much more than the news of the American Revolution.The character of the shrewish wife is one-dimensional, but the more I think about Rip Van Winkle and how he reacts (or fails to react) to life and the events around him, the more I'm intrigued with this story. In fact, the process of writing this review convinced me to up my rating from 3 stars to 4. There's more here than initially meets the eye. It's an interesting character analysis as well as a fun story.

The Tragedy of Julius Caesar (First Folio title: The Tragedie of Ivlivs Cæsar), often abbreviated as Julius Caesar, is a history play and tragedy by William Shakespeare first performed in 1599.

The story follows Prince Prospero's attempts to avoid a dangerous plague known as the Red Death by hiding in his abbey. He, along with many other wealthy nobles, has a masquerade ball within seven rooms of his abbey, each decorated with a different color. In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious figure disguised as a Red Death victim enters and makes his way through each of the rooms.  The story follows many traditions of Gothic fiction and is often analyzed as an allegory about the inevitability of death, though some critics advise against an allegorical reading. Many different interpretations have been presented, as well as attempts to identify the true nature of the titular disease.

Therefore, I will be brief, like Kim Kardashian's marriage. Big game hunting expert and luminary, Sanger Rainsford, falls off his yacht in the Caribbean and winds up on the island of Dr. Moreau General Zaroff and his towering, gigantinormous Cossack servant Ivan. General Zaroff, a fellow hunter and admirer of Rainsford has grown bored with the ease of murdering even the most dangerous of big game. Removing his moral compass and setting it behind the glass of rationalization never to be touched again, the General has cured his malaise by tracking and hunting soylent green people. Next target….Rainsford. THOUGHTS:Intelligent, well-written and a lot of fun. General Zaroff is a wonderful nemesis and Connell’s development of him at the beginning of the story was impressive. He could have been content to portray Zaroff as a one-dimensional, cardboard sociopath, but Connell gives the general depth and a backstory. This does not excuse or provide a basis for acceptance of Zaroff’s actions, but it does make him relatable and thus far more sinister. He is cold, detached and brutal but he is also well educated, polite and a rugged class of gentlemen who has, if not a sense of honor, at least a sense of good sportsmanship. All of this simply makes Zaroff appear more diabolical. Rainsford for his part is tough, clever and competent and provides a suitable counter-point to Zaroff in the tale. Rainsford navigates the plot effectively and makes reasoned decisions without inducing pangs of “don’t do that idiot” from the reader. He is a more than worthy adversary for the General.Oh, and I loved the ending of the story. I thought it was appropriate and subtle and perfectly in keeping with the tone of the story. To put a line at the bottom of this review, this is a classic short story that merits the title and is one that I would politely impel people to peruse if they have not done so. Being acquainted with the plot didn’t hamper my delectation of the story and I don’t believe it will impede yours.4.0 stars. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

"The Birth-Mark" is a short story by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The tale examines obsession with human perfection. It was first published in the March 1843 edition of The Pioneer and later appeared in Mosses from an Old Manse, a collection of Hawthorne's short stories published in 1846.

It’s an old story, a story told a thousand times in a thousand different ways: a greedy person trades their soul for riches, and in the end regrets having made the choice. I really like this version because the characters Irving chose, the setting, and his descriptions of them were perfect. Mr. Irving knew how to tell a tale.

Classic horror tale. A family and their son Herbert are visited by an old soldier named Morris. He tells them from his time in India and shows them a mysterious talisman, the monkey's paw. According to him the owner of the paw has three wishes. Since he already had three he throw the object into the fire. Herbert's father is getting the talisman out of the fire and from here the horror starts. If you want to know how the family got the wished for 200 pounds you should take a peek now. The story is set up in three chapters and is very creepy. Stephen King certainly had this story in mind when writing Pet Cemetery... Can you guess what the father's final wish was? A classic and absolutely recommended.

"The Cask of Amontillado" (sometimes spelled "The Casque of Amontillado") is a short story, written by Edgar Allan Poe and first published in the November 1846 issue of Godey's Lady's Book. The story is set in a nameless Italian city in an unspecified year (possibly sometime during the eighteenth century) and concerns the deadly revenge taken by the narrator on a friend who he claims has insulted him. Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around a person being buried alive – in this case, by immurement.
