So, I enjoyed these books. Not the most intellectual, but for a fantasy lover that is looking for a fun but easy read, these are good. The fourth book ends without wrapping up all the loose ends, to entice you to his next series I'm sure, but wraps up enough to not leave the reader unsatisfied.The characters of these books are basically well developed D&amp;D characters, which is what the Forgotten Realm books are all based on. They have the traits that are expected and, yet, Salvatore finds interesting ways to tweak the basic D&amp;D molds just a little, to make the characters different and interesting. But because they are based on a specific mold, the characters tend to not have too much depth (thus adding to the book’s fun read, but not too thought provoking status). I would say that Salvatore has two main strengths in the books I have read so far. His playing of the characters off of one another is wonderful, often making me laugh out loud while reading. The camaraderie of the companions seems real and sincere, not forced. His other strength is in his detail of battle scenes, especially fights involving the main character, Drizzt. You feel like you’re in the action, without him adding so many details that they weigh down and slow the action.

At first I berated myself for lumping the whole trilogy together before I would give my review; however, after finishing Sojourn, I am glad that I held my review until I got the perspective of all three books.In a word: fantastic. At first, I was unimpressed with Homeland, not liking the start. Once I got going with it, however, I realised that my problem was that I felt like the beginning (circumstances surrounding Drizzt's birth) was just plopped in the front. Once I started understanding the author's goal though, it started falling into place and I quickly fell in love, and despaired for Drizzt. This was my first real knowledge of the Drow's way of life other than the terms "Underdark", "evil", and "Spider Queen", but as I started comprehending the complex politics surrounding a drow's life, I wanted to explain to Drizzt how screwed he really was. It seemed unbelievable to me that such an innocent could survive, and the book tantalizes you with the very thin line of survival regarding Drizzt's naiveity and Zak's protection.Exile was by far the BEST book of the three, in my opinion. Wrapping up the links from Menzoberranzan and the hope for a better future, this book forces Drizzt to understand that evil is not everywhere. Belwar's forgiveness and comprehension that Drizzt actually saved Belwar's life was an wonderful story of friendship. Also Drizzt's futile but determined road to save Clacker keeps the reader hoping that by some miracle he can be saved, but inevitably, of course, that is impossible. After the clear heroism of Zak, Drizzt determines that he must do more than flee the drow city, but also the Underdark.Sojourn is a book full of frustrating coincidences that seems to constantly screw Drizzt - mostly due to Drizzt's lack of knowledge of the surface cultures. However, the overall terribly sad story of Drizzt's struggle to maintain a life on the surface for seven years makes the stories of Mooshie and the moutain dwarves with Catti-brie so poignant and special, giving hope to Drizzt's future.After all, Drizzt is still very young, despite all these experiences.

A buddy read with Kristen, Gavin, and Kaora.This book picks up right where the first one ended. For this reason I cannot give any big details about plot as they will spoil the ending of the first book. Sufficient to say Drizzt is still alive which is not a big surprise as this is the second book of the series about him featuring 15 more. He struggles trying to retain his humanity, or elfinity in his case (hey look, I made up a new word!). He also finally made some real friends. We also get to have a fairly good glimpse at a very interesting civilization of guys who came straight from the pages of this book:This book avoids the dreaded Second Book of a Trilogy syndrome: it is not boring. In fact it is much more action oriented than the first one. Drizzt simply does not have much time for brooding. This was a deciding factor in my rating. I saw too many trilogies with interesting world building in the first book, exciting conclusion in the last one and throwaway filling in the second one. I expected mindless entertainment and this is exactly what I got. I am eager to start the last book of the trilogy, especially considering the way this one ended.

Six years. Not so long in the lifespan of a drow. And yet--in counting the months, the weeks, the days, the hours--it seemed to me as if I had been away from Mithril Hall a hundred times that number. The place was another lifetime, another way of life, a mere stepping stone to...To what? To where?I ride the waves along the sword coast now, the wind and spray in my face. My ceiling is the rush of clouds and the canopy of stars, my floor, the creaking boards of a swift, well-weathered ship. Beyond that lies the azure blanket, flat and still, heaving and rolling, hissing in the rain and exploding under the fall of a breaching whale.Is this, then, my home?

Drow ranger Drizzt Do'Urden, first introduced in The Icewind Dale Trilogy, quickly became one of the fantasy genre's standout characters. But Homeland first reveals the startling tale of how this one lone drow walked out of the shadowy depths of the Underdark, leaving behind a society of evil and a family who want him dead. It is here that the story of this amazing dark elf truly began.

Drizzt the Dark Elf comes to the surface world and tries to find his place in there. Nobody wants a dark elf living among people (wood elves, dwarves, etc.) due to firm belief dark elves are up to no good. There, I just gave you away the plot of the whole book, all 300 pages of it. Does it sound boring? If it does it is because the book is boring; the most boring one of the trilogy. When I started on this one I was excited. I hoped to see interesting interactions between Drizzt and the surface dwellers. I hoped to see how Drizzt would fit in the new society. Well, he did not fit and all the interactions I saw was people - I am using this term in a broad sense - sending him away from yet another city gates. This was not-so-subtle message about racial prejudice (Drizzt is a dark elf, get it?). I also thought about the following while reading: It did not help any that Drizzt was on practically non-stop guilt trip for something which was not his fault in the least: Somehow I missed the moment where a badass guy who survived all the double-crossings of the Drow society became Mary Sue, or Gary Stu if you wish. His character became one-dimensional in his goodness and misery. It is shame as the beginning of the book was quite good. Imagine one of the best - if not the best - fighters of the society where practically all males are raised to be ones. This guy is accompanied by his pet panther, the grown-up version of the guy below:These are very efficient predators, by the way. So which non-magical force in the Universe can make these two run away? Simple:This particular episode was hilarious and made me laugh out loud. Unfortunately the book could not keep up with the fairly exciting beginning. It was still a decent read, 3-star decent which did not kill my interest in further Drizzt's adventures in the least. So as I already mentioned this is good enough but not great novel and the conclusion of the Drizzt origin trilogy.
