Category: The First Book You See In a Bookstore 3 I-have-no-idea-how-to-rate-manga Stars I fell in love with this cover when I walked through the doors of my local bookstore, it drew my eyes instantly and would not release them. I chided myself that “No, you cannot buy another book you’ve never heard of just because it’s pretty” and I forced myself to walk past it to the section where the book was that I actually came for. However, I wandered back and picked it up and perused it a bit, shoved it back on the shelf and scolding myself again. Well….. I bought it, obviously. What a wonderful dystopian manga Deadman Wonderland Vol. 1 is. I flipped through it frantically. I wanted to know more, more….. MORE. And I still do. This volume is not a meal, this is a snack – and as tasty as it is I am STILL HUNGRY, DAMMIT!! Ganta finds himself accused of killing his friends and classmates, although he is innocent, and sent to an unusual prison. Incarceration at Deadman Wonderland is unlike anywhere else; it is a deadly game of cat and mouse. Together with his unusual “friend” Ganta navigates the new world he has found himself in and every time he turns a corner it just keeps getting more strange. I’m positive that I still have no idea what is going on but bring it ON!! 

So Ikkaku kicks ass, and defeats his opponent. Rangiku and Tôshiro barely make it through, and Renji survives because Ururu gets into kill mode and almost destroys everything- she is such a silly girl because she seems so beaten down, yet she is so surprisingly kick ass! Ichigo battles the bad bad guy (we have an hierarchy to keep track of), Grimmjow (who I love). The reason our Soul Reapers survive is they are given permission to unlock their full power in the world of the living. However, Grimmjow is taken back to Hueco Mundo because he is in the world of the living without permission (and managed to lose 5 Arrancars without Aizen's authorization. He is escorted by Tôsen and punished (Tôsen cuts off his arm...which will not help his sanity at all! Crazy!).The end of the volume visits Uryû, who is training with his father to regain his spiritual power. Chad asks to train with Urahara and Ichigo goes to the Visored. What for, we don't yet know!So good!!

First manga I ever read. It was early evening, I was in 8th or 9th grade, and I was browsing the back aisles of Bookstar(now closed)in my city. I was always interested in manga/anime(didn't know the names of what it was called at the time) but I thought they were mostly provocative due to me scanning over a kissing scene in one of classmate's manga in elementary school-Egad! and not being allowed to watch Adult Swim on Cartoon Network.After discovering AMVs(first was Death Note) on Youtube one night and sneaking and watching Inuyasha one 4 am morning, I again became captivated by the art and storyline much like when I was younger and addicted to Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Yugioh, Digimon, Kirby, Sonic, and eventually Dragon Ball Z; there was something about those shows that seemed to always capture my attention and bring this intense feeling of pure elation. I even believe Tuxedo Mask was my first ever crush. Well, I bought the manga, hopped in the car, and my dad drove my sister and I next door to Starbucks where we got a hot chocolate. I was super excited about finally owning this thing that had intrigued me all my life. I dived right in and quickly realized you had to read it the opposite way; once I got a handle on the direction I was hooked.I loved Lelouch and the art and everything. I found the plot to be interesting but seemed a bit slow in getting to the action, which I didn't want to admit to myself since I had gotten my hopes up incredibly high.I finished the manga and was excited to get the second and work my way into this new world of Japanese comics. This manga and several anime and amvs led me through some of the best and absolute worst times of my life. They both defined and became a part of who I was as a person; I grew interested in Japanese culture and wanted to study aboard there or at least visit, wanted to dye my hair blue, craved coffee in tin cans, wanted to go to conventions, discovered techno/electronica music, wanted bangs(which I eventually got), wanted to try Pocky, wanted to live in this fictitious world where adventure and excitement was happening around every corner whether you were with friends or not. It became an addiction that both entertained and haunted me which only got worse when I finally grew a "girly" bone in my body and started liking Shoujo manga/anime.Such dark times my middle school and early high school days were...Would never ever want to go backIt all eventually evened out in the end and I am no longer that obsessed girl I was back in the day(at least not with anime/manga haha). Don't get me wrong. I still adore anime and manga and every so often I'll pick up a volume at the bookstore and read it, but I've toned down A LOT. Also I left out a lot of details of what that obsession was like. This is a book review after all. Still...I know for a fact that even currently watching too much anime and/or reading too much manga would probably make me relapse. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Vol 1: 3.5 stars out of 5 

I really don't want to bring the rating for this series down. I'm reading these volumes at the request of a friend, and they are, I suspect quite good for Manga. I'm not really much of a Manga reader. What I find fascinating about the series is the way religion is tied so effortlessly into the plot. Alucard is no doubt the coolest of the vampires. There's quite a bit of theological stuff to chew on here as well. I'm not usually shy about expressing my opinion, but I really don't have much to compare this with. As a kid I read comic books like everyone else did, but apart from a stint reading all the Calvin and Hobbes books, and Gary Larson's The Far Side, I've gone pretty much textual.Kohta Hirano is talented both as an artist and as a story-teller. Probably it's my age, but I'm not sure I'm following the story correctly, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. A fine way to pass a rainy afternoon.

Final Volume!One of the best things about Kohta Hirano's sexy apocalypse of warring vampires, Nazis, Catholics, werewolves, and Australian mercenaries is that all the way up to, and possibly through, this final volume, we don't know who's going to win. The streets of London are awash in blood, a zeppelin descends a la Hindenburg, and six of our favorite characters are locked in face-off fights. It's possible that no one will come away from this crescendo "alive." Of course, we're not sure who's alive or undead at this point. But what's most certain is that London needs babies, because there isn't a civilian soul left alive in this battle to the undeath. Alas, Hellsing, we knew you well.

Dinosaurs. Seriously, can the frantic world of Gantz get any more scary? How about a giant doughboy with crazy fangs and a strange outie bellybutton? Yeah, it's not just scary; it's a very strange world for Kei!. At least this time the Gantz crew have a new weapon! It's an awesome state-of-the-art uni-motorcycle thing! And one of the characters uses a massive space samurai sword. It's Gantz!Each volume of Gantz comes shrink-wrapped and carries an 18+ content advisory.

There's a mysterious past buried in the mind of the affable, yet somehow incredibly dangerous Vash the Stampede, and everyone on this desert planet seems to know about it. Not only that, they've been trying to hunt him down for the sixty million double-dollar bounty on his head. Well, enter two insurance adjuster ladies, claiming that the man is a localized disaster, and voila! No more bounty. But that doesn't seem to end Vash's troubles, or his trail of destruction.This is the world of Trigun. Chock full of hi-jinks, frantic action, dusty western poses, and a resounding theme: Peace and Love! Join us as Vash continues his adventures across this kooky, unfortunate landscape, seeking something to end his tragicomic journey.

March 6, 2035. Motoko Aramaki is a hyper-advanced cyborg, a counter-terrorist net security expert heading the investigative department of the giant multi-national, Poseidon Industrial. Partly transcending the physical world and existing in a virtual world of networks, Motoko is a fusion of multiple entities and identities, deploying remotely controlled prosthetic humanoid surrogates around the globe to solve a series of bizarre crimes. Meanwhile, Tamaki Tamai, a psychic investigator from the Channeling Agency, has been commissioned to investigate strange changes in the temporal universe, brought about by two forces, one represented by the teachings of a professor named Rahampol, and the other by the complex, evolving Motoko entity. What unfolds will be all in a day's work...a day that will change everything, forever.

Finally some of the answers are forthcoming that turn a stylish manga into one that can actually be understood. Just when I was about to draw a chart of all the information that was scattered across the first volume and the beginning of this second one.Killy is still trying to make his way up through the megastructure, encountering other people and machines and something in between from time to time. Usually it doesn't lead to friendly conversations. There's lots of action.He's still in search of someone that possesses the Net Terminal Genes, but seemingly without knowing exactly what they are for. Pretty soon, though, Killy (and the reader) will learn of the motivation of at least one faction for finding them. And this manga starts to make sense.I'm going back to reading the Master Editions now and am actually looking forward to the second one of those.3.5 stars for this volume, which contains the last three chapters of the first Master Edition and the first two chapters of the second Master Edition. Confusing, I know. But it's the same story, just collected differently. I still recommend the Master Editions, because of the refined artwork, which makes it easier to identify things.

2030 Tokyo: While patrolling Tokyo's post-World War III refugee zones Togusa, the newest member of Section 9, discovers that one of the most powerful cyber-criminals his squad has ever faced has plans to kill their leader, Section 9 Chief Daisuke Aramaki, in one of three stories in this collection, and it will take all of the members of Section 9 to stop him. The action heats up in the stories "Double Targets," "First Love, Last Love" and "Revenge of the Cold Machines."

This was a high rush chapter. At first a mysteriously new guy comes into the fold and explains to Kei that he was part of a Gantz group. Simple enough right? However, the vampire gang we've been learning more and more about comes into play and starts slaughtering the Gantz team. First going after the strongest members around. Kei is eventually a target and even without the Suit he fights them off. Will he survive? Is this the end? Well...Good: The fights in this volume in particular were excellent. High speed, badass, bloody, and fucked up. Some shocking deaths here too. Also the ending leaves up a new status quo that I'm really excited to see where it's going to go. Bad: The vampire gang seems like faceless drones most of the time. Overall this is a lot of fun. I think I'm enjoying these chapters even more than the start chapters. A 4 out of 5.

It's a crazy face-off between three gory armies and their primary killers, and if you think that sounds nuts, wait until you dive into the crimson-stained new volume of Kohta Hirano's creepy-cool Hellsing manga series.
