Secrecy and Silence are second nature to Marcello Clerici, the hero of The Conformist, a book which made Alberto Moravia one of the world's most read postwar writers. Clerici is a man with everything under control - a wife who loves him, colleagues who respect him, the hidden power that comes with his secret work for the Italian political police during the Mussolini years. But then he is assigned to kill his former professor, now exiled in France, to demonstrate his loyalty to the Fascist state, and falls in love with a strange, compelling woman; his life is torn open - and with it the corrupt heart of Fascism. The Iguana has the force of "The Tempest," and is written with a grace comparable in every way to the works of Izak Dinesen and Djuna Barnes. Little wonder, then, that this novel was called by the noted critic Pietro Citati, "one of the very few books destined to redeem the honor of Italian literature since the Second World War." In a fantastic world that is and is not seventeenth-century England, a baby is found floating in the Thames. The child, Jordan, is rescued by Dog Woman and grows up to travel the world like Gulliver, though he finds that the world’s most curious oddities come from his own mind. Winterson leads the reader from discussions on the nature of time to Jordan’s fascination with journeys concealed within other journeys, all with a dizzying speed that shoots the reader from epiphany to shimmering epiphany.

Spulciando tra vecchi libri a casa di mia madre, ne ho trovato uno degli anni '80 intitolato "Terra" di Stefano Benni. Conosco questo autore per aver letto altre sue opere, ma niente faceva presagire di trovarsi di fronte ad un lavoro davvero originale. Ma andiamo con ordine...Il libro si apre nel 2039 quando, a causa di un incidente, scoppia la terza guerra mondiale, poi altre tre.CENTO E PIU' ANNI DOPOIl paesaggio della Terra è drasticamente cambiato a causa delle guerre. Il mondo è rivestito da una coltre di ghiaccio e neve. La nostra avventura comincia al freddo, a Parigi, dove la vita prosegue  sottoterra. A causa dei vari conflitti, una grande nube ha cancellato il sole dal nostro pianeta. Migliaia  di gigaton di polvere, gas e scorie radioattive sollevati dalle esplosioni belliche, hanno avviato la Terra a una glaciazione irreversibile e verso una crisi energetica mondiale.Il ritrovamento di un "vettore" probabilmente lanciato da un'astronave in difficoltà, rivela la scoperta di un pianeta naturale simile alla Terra. Contemporaneamente, vengono  scoperti a Cuzco in Perù, dei reperti Inca che sembrano indicare come nelle profondità della Terra sia custodita una straordinaria fonte energetica. I "potenti" decidono quindi di inviare nello spazio, una squadra di astronauti alla ricerca del pianeta e inoltre conducono ricerche approfondite nel sito Inca al fine di trovare la fonte energetica sconosciuta...Questo libro è davvero originale, ricco di trovate esilaranti. Stefano Benni è un cantastorie di provata abilità.  I personaggi sono molteplici e riccamente caratterizzati. Geniale anche nell'imbastitura della storia, intervallata abilmente da racconti e poesie. Tutto il libro è costellato da questo filo di bellissime perle che si spiega davanti al lettore. Ogni racconto è una sorpresa, una trovata letteraria a volte comica a volte triste, sempre però rispettando il suo stile, molto personale.Un racconto a volte amaro, a volte irriverente. Alcune situazioni raccontate nel libro sono apparentemente paradossali ma sono anche una feroce satira verso certi atteggiamenti sia dei politici che dei mass media.Nonostante sia stato scritto più di trent'anni fa, maledettamente attuale.Consigliato per chi ama sorridere e riflettere. RecensioneL’Ultimo spettacolo nella Correggio del mio Tondelli 20 anni dopo. Un «tondelliano postumo» rilegge le opere libertine ora raccolte in 2 volumi Christian Frascella, Tuttolibri - La StampaHo saputo chi era Pier Vittorio Tondelli quando lui non era più di questo mondo da un paio d'anni. Mi capitò tra le mani una copia di Altri libertini, sfogliai le prime pagine, trovai la sua scrittura lontana da ciò che mi interessava allora, e misi via il libro. Ciò che mi infastidiva maggiormente, credo, era l'alone sacrilego che accompagnava quel libro di successo. Sapevo che era stato al centro di una causa per oscenità, qualcuno voleva che fosse ritirato dalle librerie, e che quella causa aveva contribuito a farlo leggere ancora di più. Forse per colpa di libri che si erano portati dietro accuse, fatwe, fama di scandalo e che avevo letto senza capirci un accidente, o trovandoli indigesti polpettoni ripieni di droghe e sesso spinto e senza un briciolo di anima, ero prevenuto anche nei confronti di Altri libertini.Fu poi uno scritto del critico Fulvio Panzeri, anche quello capitatomi sotto gli occhi per caso, ad accendere un barlume di interesse; e poi le letture di due autori come Culicchia e Ballestra che Tondelli aveva aiutato a esordire alimentarono il barlume acceso da Panzeri, e fu con vivo interesse che ripresi Altri libertini. Be', inutile sottolineare che fu un'esperienza folgorante.Il libro non era cambiato da quando lo avevo sfogliato la prima volta: ero cambiato io, ero un lettore maturo, ero pronto a lasciarmi trascinare nelle avventure di quelle busone, quei tossici gay con un'anima vagabonda e disperatamente sentimentale, quelle ragazze che si erano fatte una cattiva reputazione perché discinte e promiscue, ma nelle quali pulsava un amore più puro e toccante di quello di una suora per Cristo.C'era questa provincia emiliana ritagliata sulla nativa Correggio, che sembrava un po' il set de L'ultimo spettacolo di Bogdanovich, là dove i tavolacci freddi del «Posto Ristoro» andavano a sostituire il bar-sala da biliardo e il cinema in dismissione di Sam il Leone.Quei personaggi e quei posti mi ispirarono da subito (e continuano a farlo) una furente e tenera passione: erano esistenze ai margini che prendevano il centro della scena, per poi dileguarsi, all'ultima pagina, nella nebbia di un futuro incerto ma quasi sicuramente disgraziato.Gli outsider di Bukowski e Selby jr, che avevo ritenuto individui così tipicamente americani, in realtà erano passati anche nella nostra letteratura, e in ritardo ne prendevo coscienza. Dico ritardo, ma forse non è così. Semplicemente Tondelli era un autore di un'altra generazione, e io dovevo, come ogni buon lettore, risalire il fiume del tempo per incontrarlo e ammirarlo: siamo tutti successivi a qualcuno o qualcosa di eccezionale. Ma era il linguaggio il corpo tramortente dei racconti dello scrittore emiliano: l'infilata di bestemmie, citazioni, parole sgrammaticate, periodi senza punteggiatura, dialoghi parossistici e teneri, descrizioni sguaiate di stati di follia, intuizioni verbali, scippi dai fumetti, la coloritura a tinte forti di destini/declini. Tutto, nei tocchi di Tondelli, diventava orgia di vita e poesia dell'annullamento.Ogni racconto ti lasciava dentro un senso di infatuazione colpevole, un brivido incantato da sguardo nell'abisso. Tondelli non era quel tipo di scrittore di cui vorresti avere il numero di telefono per chiamarlo dopo che hai finito di leggere un suo libro: perché non avresti saputo cosa chiedergli e che tipo di complimento fargli. E non t'importava se fosse un'asceta della parola tutto preso dal mito di se stesso oppure un artista sensibile alla lusinga: Tondelli, almeno per me - se avessi cominciato a leggerne le opere quando ancora abitava questo mondo -, sarebbe esistito attraverso i suoi scritti: che fossero racconti, romanzi, commedie, articoli, o testi inclassificabili come Un weekend postmoderno, a me sarebbe bastato sapere che esisteva, e che scriveva, scriveva. Leggerlo postumo mi ha sollevato dalla responsabilità di incontrarlo, di vederlo in diretta appollaiato sulle poltrone di qualche fichissimo salotto televisivo, a consumarsi in trite dissertazioni sullo stato delle cose e a consumarmi la stima. Cinicamente, la morte me lo ha reso più affascinante, più vero, più avvicinabile. Come spero possa accadere alle generazioni dopo la mia, in quel risalire indietro nei decenni che è continua fonte di meraviglia e nostalgia.

La sigla PAO, che sta per Picchetto Armato Ordinario, evoca l’esperienza della caserma, punto di partenza di un romanzo in cui Tondelli narra le storie amorose e comicamente poco marziali che travolgono una compagnia di giovani durante l’anno di servizio militare. Al grigiore dell’apparato burocratico e militare questi giovani oppongono una vitalità a volte sfrenata, tra infrazioni ai codici disciplinari e una più o meno larvata resistenza alla sottomissione: nelle loro tane (docce, sgabuzzini, scantinati...) e durante le ore di libera uscita (in discoteca, negli ozi a Villa Borghese, nelle gite a Ostia...) danno facilmente sfogo alle voglie e ai discorsi, che l’autore segue con sguardo divertito e complice. Pao Pao è un testo polifonico dalle molte sorprese, che da una parte narra i mille sotterfugi e umori coi quali i giovani affrontano il rito di passaggio della caserma, e dall’altra riscopre quell’antica arte di sopravvivere che il Bel Paese incessantemente tramanda adeguandola a ogni situazione.

Virginia Woolf's Orlando 'The longest and most charming love letter in literature', playfully constructs the figure of Orlando as the fictional embodiment of Woolf's close friend and lover, Vita Sackville-West. Goliarda Sapienza's The Art of Joy was written over a nine year span, from 1967 to 1976. At the time of her death in 1996, Sapienza had published nothing in a decade, having been unable to find a publisher for what was to become her most celebrated work, due to its perceived immorality. One publisher's rejection letter exclaimed: 'It's a pile of iniquity.' The manuscript lay for decades in a chest finally being proclaimed a "forgotten masterpiece" when it was eventually published in 2005. \

Goliarda Sapienza (1924-1996) was born in Catania, Sicily in 1924, in an anarchist socialist family. At sixteen, she entered the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome and worked under the direction of Luchino Visconti, Alessandro Blasetti and Francesco Maselli. She is the author of several novels published during her lifetime: Lettera Aperta (1967), Il Filo Di Mezzogiorno (1969), L'Universit� di Reibbia (1983), Le Certezze Del Dubbio (1987). L'Arte Della Gioia is considered her masterpiece.

Rosa was amazingly prescient. .She predicted that imperialists would continue to impose their style of democracy in the 3rd world where the rich are the only ones who get freedom. That they would continue to destroy whoever gets in their way: ie. military /CIA coups. That even in the 1st world, capitalism would capitalize on anything to pick apart our rights. Homeland security, the war on drugs, whatever excuse they can come up with. Liberals (blair, obama are no different and will we ever learn?) are often equally as guilty.Her comments on imperial war, mass murder , expansion of capitalism , how war is essential to capitalist development make us realize how relevant her views were to today, as we watch wars with Iraq, Afghanistan, (Iran?)… Rosa also writes of the use of credit to expand the working class’s purchasing power. She heavily criticizes this idea, of credit as an “adaptation” of capitalism, as a boon to the working class. Today, as we suffer through this grand world crisis, we can see how credit has abused the working class. Banks gave credit to those who had no business getting credit, knowing full well that they wouldn't be able to pay.Essential reading. Even better read with The Mass Strike (get the Essential Rosa Luxemburg published by Haymarket Books). 

Just in passing - the edition I read had a much better cover, the black and white photograph of a woman's hands covering her face with a cigarette between her fingers pretty much summed up my feelings about this book.There is a sentence in Moab is My Wash Pot where Stephen Fry, at least, I’m nearly positive he’s not quoting someone else, says that it is easier for someone who has been to a public boarding school to be in prison than it is for anybody else in society. Not the most endearing advertisement for public schools, but then, neither are most people that seem to have attended one. The point is that both prisons and English public schools are examples of total institutions and these are precisely what Goffman is looking at here.I really like Goffman – he has the keenest of eyes for little paradoxes and quirks. I was telling a friend over dinner the other week that I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he was really from Mars, or an alien at least. He seems to see the things that the rest of us miss because we take them for granted – you know, like that invisibility shield in Hitchhiker’s Guide – an SEP shield, somebody else’s problem, an invisibility shield that immediately tells you that whatever you are looking at is someone else’s problem and so makes it immediately and completely invisible to you. Somehow Goffman is able to see past this invisibility shield and show us exactly what is normally hidden.A total institution is one where your whole life is going to be spent there, at least for a time. Prison, boarding school, monastery, mental asylum or the military are all examples. These are not always places of punishment, and they are not always identical, but they have very many similar characteristics and they generally have a ‘purpose’ as an institution. What Goffman does is look at this purpose from the perspective of the actors that play out their various roles within these institutions – or rather, he looks at the roles played in mental asylums as an example here, as this was where he performed his research.These asylums are institutions that were designed for a number of purposes – firstly, to remove people from society that were considered to be behaving in ways that make them not appropriate to remain at liberty within society and secondly, to treat and eventually cure these people - the second of these purposes is the one the institutions themselves tend to stress. In one of his other books, Stigma, the possibility of effecting such a cure – given the ongoing stigma associated with having been in such a place (and therefore of having to be in such a place) would probably be enough to ensure a kind of alienation from society for the rest of one's life anyway. In many ways, being in such a place is proof enough of needing to be in such a place. But Goffman is really interested in the relationships that occur between people, particularly people with different roles in these places.The first essay is concerned with being inducted into a total institution and there is a lot of very interesting things said about the physical and mental ‘stripping’ that occurs when one enters such an institution. Like the scene in A Clockwork Orange where Alex is brought to prison and the guards index his belongings and place them in a box – you are often stripped naked as part of the induction into these institutions. The forsaking of all previous belongings as a mode of entering this new life seems to be an important aspect of these rites. But if you think about it, this is a very strange thing to do to a mental patient. The taking away of all markers of their previous identity isn’t an immediately obvious means of bringing them back to normality – whatever that might be. The other thing is that it is often someone very close to the patient that has brought them to the hospital for treatment. The patient is unlikely to be terribly happy about being brought to such a place – these places sound about as close to hell on earth as is possible to get outside of one of the US torture prisons – and the patients have generally been brought there by someone who claims to ‘love them’. This is likely to lead to awkward moments between these people, to say the least. But the other problem is that if the person is to get out they are likely to have to at least appear to be reconciled to this person that has imprisoned them – otherwise, isn’t that an instance of their continued lack of mental health? These catch-22 situations are endless, as anyone who has read One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest would already know. We like to imagine that the central fact of our society is our love of individual freedom and individual identity – but to be insane is to behave in particularly ‘individual ways’. If the fundamental dichotomy is between the individual and society, then surely the existence of asylums is a kind of victory of society over the individual. And to get back out of these places the individual must act in ways that are highly socially prescribed, in fact, so much so that the ability to suppress one’s inclinations is perhaps as good a definition of ‘getting well’ as any other.The fact of these institutions is that they are always grossly underfunded and as such do more to act as prisons, keeping people off the streets, than as reformatories. But the myth of the institutions is that they are where people go to get well – so, the relationships that are set up, particularly between staff and inmates, are defined according to this fundamental contradiction. The problem is that when the ‘reason’ for an institution so poorly matches its realisation – when we say ‘we’re here to help’ but actually clearly are punishing people, then we humans tend to blame the victim. There is a punishment – so we’d better think up a crime that makes sense of the punishment, that justifies it… otherwise, we would be monsters.I really enjoyed this book – a friend of mine asked me if it wasn’t too ‘heavy’, but while I absolutely understand what she means, and at times, it really was just that, mostly this book could just as easily have been about work in an office or life in a hospital. We still have total institutions and they create little social worlds that are defined by their own needs and their own interrelationships. Right at the end of this one he mentions insane women who got pregnant or people who would bite – and how the institutions would take these people and removed their wombs or pulled all of their teeth. This was said to be in the best interests of the patients, but really, it was designed for the administrative convenience of the institutions. We need people like Goffman in the world, people able to look at the institutions we form and the dehumanising effects these can cause.Some quotes:A chief concern is to develop a sociological version of the structure of the self. p. xiivAll of these restrictions of contact presumably help to maintain the antagonistic stereotypes. Two different social and cultural worlds develop, jogging alongside each other with points of official contact but little mutual penetration. Significantly, the institutional plant and name come to be identified by both staff and inmates as somehow belonging to the staff, so that when either grouping refers to the views or interests of ‘the institution,’ by implication they are referring (as I shall also) to the views and concerns of the staff. p9There are other reasons for being interested in these establishments, too. In our society, they are the forcing houses for changing persons; each is a natural experiment on what can be done to the self. p12On admission to a total institution, however, the individual is likely to be stripped of his usual appearance and of the equipment and services by which he maintains it, thus suffering a personal defacement. Clothing, combs, needle and thread, cosmetics, towels, soaps, shaving sets, bathing facilities – all these may be taken away or denied him, although some may be kept in inaccessible storage, to be returned if and when he leaves. P20As a result, the inmate tends to feel that for the duration of his required stay—his sentence—he has been totally exiled from living. P68Many total institutions, most of the time, seem to function merely as storage dumps for inmates, but, as previously suggested, they usually present themselves to the public as rational organisations designed consciously, through and through, as effective machines for producing a few officially avowed and officially approved ends. It was also suggested that one frequent official objective is the reformation of inmates in the direction of some ideal standard. This contradiction, between what the institution does and what its officials must say it does, forms the basic context of the staff’s daily activity. P74The personal possessions of an individual are an important part of the materials out of which he builds a self, but as an inmate the ease with which he can be managed by staff is likely to increase with the degree to which he is dispossessed. P78One of the arguments advanced by officers of the Navy in favour of corporal punishment is this: it can be inflicted in a moment; it consumes no valuable time; and when the prisoner’s shirt is put on, that is the last of it. Whereas, if another punishment were substituted, it would probably occasion a great waste of time and trouble, besides thereby begetting in the sailor an undue idea of his importance. p79-80An important part of the theory of human nature in many total institutions is the belief that if the new inmate can be made to show extreme deference to staff immediately upon arrival, he will thereafter be manageable—that in submitting to these initial demands, his ‘resistance’ or ‘spirit’ is somehow broken. P89The visiting room in some total institutions is important here. Both décor and conduct in these places are typically closer to the outside standards than are those that prevail in the inmate’s actual living quarters. I really am glad I finally got around to reading this. The book examines the history of the feminist movement in the United States with an eye towards the ways in which the movement fell short on meeting the needs of women who had other marginalized identities. I personally knew some of this history but not all and as Davis mentions it's crucial to grapple with the historic actions of movements when trying to address why certain people choose not to engage in those movements. I also think most people don't have a good understanding of what intersectionality means necessarily and have a tendency to reduce it down to being about who is "more oppressed". I think the book could do a good job of helping one develop a more nuanced understanding of intersectionality as the ways in which different identities intersect to create differing needs and experiences, which need to be addressed individually. This was 4.5 stars for me and I would totally recommend it to others who want to learn more about feminism or those trying to cultivate a better political analysis around women's liberation and the way it intersects with other movements.

In 1999, retired Argentinian federal justice agent Benjamín Espósito is writing a novel, using an old closed case as the source material. That case is the brutal rape and murder of Liliana Coloto. The other issue is that Gómez is still at large, no one aware if he is alive or dead. But as Pablo at the time mentioned that passion is one thing that cannot be changed in behavior, Benjamín learns now that that premise still holds true.

Mr. Thank You is the kindly young driver of a local bus traveling from poverty stricken coastal villages, over the mountains, to the town. Haruko moves in with Naota under the pretense of being a housekeeper, but Naota knows there's something obviously strange about her. To make matters worse, large shapes are growing out of his head, hatching into large monsters that Haruko makes her mission to kill. Who is Haruko really, and what is she after? You won't find out until the end of this bizarre story.

After the One Year War, Peace was signed between Zeon and the Earth Federation.
