Elsewhere is moody. It's from the viewpoint of young people who have dropped out and live on the streets, forming their own families and relationships. I don't especially feel comfortable with the idea of kids living this way, but that's one of the best things about reading. You get to see different worlds, lives, existences, and realize that humans are all the same, no matter what kind of lives they live.Ron came to the Bordertown to find his older brother. He was living in denial, and this trip helped him to find himself, to let go of notions about who he was and what was important in life. I liked seeing him go through that evolution.It was interesting how his name changed as his personality, or should I say who he thought he was, went through transitions. It was kind of ironic that he found peace within when his last manifestation would have seemed the most unfortunate. He found a family in the place he least expected it, but he sort of came full circle. To say more would be spoil the book.This is a thoughtful book, with the capacity to inspire deep emotions in a reader. I picked it up because I am intensely interested in stories about Faerie, and this book is very good for those who like Faerie. Along with those elements is a deep story that gives a little more along with the surface fantastical elements. This book is about how we think we express our identities, purpose, bonds of loyalty and affection. How a person takes all those ingredients and uses them to become who they are meant to be, if they can make it through the painful metamorphosis that leads to the final state: that of the butterfly who emerges from its chrysalis, not without a lot of pain and effort.

The Chronicles of Morgaine is one of the tattiest, most worn out and dogeared books on my shelf - I own a 1986 edition of this and it has survived about six house moves, numerous car-boot-sale culls and a protracted period in a cardboard box in a loft during the 1990's - and it is probably the most read of my books. Maybe not every year or even two years, but in the last 15 or so years it has done faithful service. I really love the story - Chronicles (a collection of three books) and the sequel Exile's Gate. You might be forgiven for thinking this is a bit of a sword &amp; sandal Conan &amp; Sonja saga - nothing like it! It owes far more, I suspect, to Arthurian legend than anything and there isn't a bulging loincloth to be found. What more to be said? the plot is long and linear, based as it is around an ill-fated quest; there are battles and travails aplenty, but none of that really matters. Once you "get it" you realise that the *real* story is about the developing relationship, uneasy at first, between the two protagonists; the fey, unpredictable and beautiful Morgaine and her faithful warrior servant, young, persistent and flawed Vanye. To say much more would spoil it, but the development of these two characters and how they interact is what makes this story what it is. Until you realise that you may find that it drags somewhat because there's a lot more "jaw jaw" than "war war". After a couple of abortive first attempts, I fell in love with the story and (as a greying 40 something I blush to admit...) with Morgaine. I only wish Cherryh had written a few more of these.

Set in the countryside north of de Lint's fictional Newford, with some of the same characters as the duo's recent, acclaimed "Seven Wild Sisters," "A Circle of Cats" is the long-awaited first picture book by long-time friends Charles de Lint and Charles Vess, whose masterful art is as magical as the story.

The Mathematics of Magic was probably the greatest discovery of the ages - at least Professor Harold Shea thought so. With the proper equations, he could instantly transport himself back in time to all the wondrous lands of ancient legend. That was the Weird Tales editor's original terse blurb for this story's magazine publication. (There was another, longer less coherent, but it wouldn't fit here on the back cover.) Death! Decay! Red Nails really is something special. It's classic Conan! Conan lovers consider Red Nails to be one of the best, and you know, they make a point.

Don't open The Anything Box unless you're prepared for the unexpected. The Grunder, a thing of horror which, if defeated, restores love... The Noise-Eater, created by a child out of his fevered imagination, gobbles up anything--or anyone--that makes a sound... The Coveti, residents of an alien world poisoned by the intrusion of the stranger from Earth... The Beast Hill, an ordinary mound of earth, except that its grass resembles fur, and--doesn't it move?

Now the final battle approaches. The races of Erin join to free their homeland from the foul Fomor and their nightmare engines. But the evil lord Balor plans a fearful vengeance, and captures the sea-god Manannan MacLir. On a deadly mission go the Champions of Eire: young Lugh, the Master of the Silver Warriors; his beloved Aine; the fearless Taillta; Morrigan, the Raven warrior-woman; Shaglan, the Pooka Shapeshifter; the mighty Dagda and his brave son Angus.

Very good collection, mostly fantasy, yet treading the dark edge of horror, rather than adventure or whimsey. Mostly worth it for the title novella and “Thorn,” but no outright clunkers. In detail:•	“The Bone Forest”–This is a prequel novella to Holdstock’s Mythago Wood and Lavondyss, I believe. It stands alone fine. This reminded me of Jonathan Carroll–what his writing would be like if he allowed himself to lose himself within the fantasy rather than playing on the dividing line between fantasy and “reality” (I read recently that Vladimir Nabokov recommends always enclosing the word “reality” in quote marks). The mythago idea is a powerful one, and provides plenty of material that Holdstock could work through for years. Yet, he seems to shy away from the epic, instead concentrating on individual stories–mano a mano with the wood. I have to admit that I think that I admire him for that.•	“Thorn”–Another powerful story, this time about a man led into a belief then believed betrayed. And, yet, was he? There’s a sense of both here. That what the man was being led to was right; that what was being done to him was wrong. But was it wrong, or just different? It reminds me of some of the cultural anthropology that I’ve been reading recently–what is one group’s delicacy is another’s abomination. What is moral in one group is highly irregular, if not immoral, in another. Excellent story to bring that out.•	“The Shapechanger”–Nice, yet not as good as the others. First, the good things. Excellent use of pagan magic and relationship between the old shaman and young, inexperienced and somewhat reluctant apprentice. Sense of danger high and yet not silly. But then, as we learn more of the daemon–the child haunting the past from the future–the idea goes downhill. Not necessarily Holdstock’s fault; battered children are, unfortunately, an overused element in today’s fantasy and horror fiction. While this might have been fresh at the time it was written, it appears old hat to us now. Still, the writing and pacing are excellent, and worth reading.•	“The Boy Who Jumped the Rapids”–Didn’t like this one so much…I think because it didn’t seem to complete itself. The elements are all there and fine–conflict, action, meaning–yet it seemed less cohesive than it should. The central mystery, the horned stranger, is resolved, but the secondary mystery, Caylon’s ability to ford the river, seems like it is resolved yet again doesn’t. Maybe it’s the interplay of the two, and trying to figure out what one theme does to the other.•	“Time of the Tree”–Very Borgesian. What it means, I don’t know, but the style, the description, are interesting. The world on man? The Earth as man? Strange–also reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s story about the beached giant.•	“Magic Man”–Well done pre-history story. I tend not to like Clan of the Cave Bear stories, so it had to get over that bias of mine. Good description, good conflict, and nice twist at the end.•	“Scarrowfell”–Like “Thorn,” a pagan fantasy/horror, playing with the modern reader’s normal Christian assumptions, then removing the veil to show the true meaning. Much of Holdstock’s work dabbles in the pagan–Mythago Wood makes a point that what we perceive as history is just the last link in a long chain of myths. It certainly differentiates his fantasies from those of others.•	“The Time Beyond Age”–This is science fiction; the rest of the book has been fantasy. Yet there’s a similarity here with the fantasy. Again, the focus is on obsession and the need to study something and understand it (as with the title novella), but the very act of studying drives the observer into contact with the phenomena and, ultimately, ruins any chances for objective advancement of knowledge. Basically, it’s the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle made fictive.

South of No North contains some of Bukowski's best work. Among the short stories collected in the book are Love for $17.50, about a man named Robert whose infatuation with a mannequin in a junk shop leads him first to buy it, then make love to it, and then eventually fall in love with "her," much to the consternation of his real-life girlfriend; Maja Thurup, about a South American tribesman with an enormous penis who is brought to Los Angeles by the woman anthropologist who has "discovered" him and become his lover; and The Devil is Hot, about an encounter with Old Nick at an amusement pier in Santa Monica, where Scratch himself is caged and on display, fed only peanut butter and dogfood, exploited by a cynical carnie.The collection also features two of Bukowski's finest and most famous short stories: All the Assholes in the World Plus Mine, an autobiographical rumination on the treatment of his hemorrhoids, and Confessions of a Man Insane Enough to Live With Beasts. (The latter story originally was published as a chapbook of 500 copies by Bensenville Mimeo Press in 1965.)The short stories collected in the volume are evocative of Bukowski at his best, when he was one of the premier short story writers still at the top of his talent.- Wikipedia

The Roominghouse Madrigals is a selection of poetry from Charles Bukowski's early work. It shows a slightly softer side to the beloved barfly.Charles Bukowski is one of America's best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in Andernach, Germany, and raised in Los Angeles, where he lived for fifty years. He published his first story in 1944, when he was twenty-four, and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp (1994).

It's like the Modest Mouse song "Bukowski" says: He's a pretty good read, but who'd wanna be such an asshole? At least Charles Bukowski came by his assholery honestly -- "born into this sorrowful deadliness" -- not like that overgrown fratboy date-rapist Jack Kerouac. Bukowski was ostracized in school, abused at home, grotesquely scarred by acne and largely unloved. So he started hating back, channeling his hurt and rage into prose and poetry that was plainspoken but eloquent and occasionally even beautiful in its own grimy way. Like the last girl at the bar at closing time. Once he got published and semifamous and the literary cult formed around him, Bukowski had no shortage of company from mustachioed skanks and slumming celebrities. And Bono, Lord help poor Bukowski. But the bile never dried up, and the poison, tho slightly tempered by old age, kept flowing onto the page. In Bukowski's world, everyone is rotten and corrupt except for the Bukowski-stand-in narrator, and he's rotten and corrupt, but at least he has some integrity about it. "Run With the Hunted" is sort of a Bukowski Greatest Hits collection of poems and short stories and novel excerpts arranged in a way to serve as a ramshackle autobiography. It's not something I'd recommend reading from cover to cover. The constant misanthropy and misogyny and drunken self-abuse can get a little tiring. But it's a good book to dip into and sample, and every so often, you might find surprising spots of warmth and tenderness.

Best friends Dave, Mike, Cyril and Moocher have just graduated from high school. There is great animosity between the cutters and the generally wealthy Indiana University students, each group who have their own turf in town. The dichotomy is that the limestone was used to build the university, which is now seen as being too good for the locals who built it. Although each of the four is a totally different personality from the other three, they also have in common the fact of being unfocused and unmotivated in life. The one slight exception is Dave. Although he has no job and doesn't know what to do with his life, he is a champion bicycle racer. He idolizes the Italian cycling team so much he pretends to be Italian, much to the chagrin of his parents, especially his used car salesman father, Ray Stoller, who just doesn't understand his son. Dave crosses the unofficial line when he meets and wants to date a IU co-ed named Katherine Bennett, who, intrigued by Dave, in turn is already dating Rod, one of the big men on campus. Dave passes himself off to her as an Italian exchange student named Enrico Gismondi. Beyond Katarina as he calls her, Dave's main immediate focus is that the Italian cycling team have announced that they will be in Indianapolis for an upcoming race, which he intends to enter to be able to race his idols. After an incident at the race, Dave, with a little help from his parents and unwittingly by actions of his friends, has to reexamine his life, what he really wants to get out of it and how best to start achieving it.
